He presented an idea for a new film series to legendary director Francis Ford Coppola: a bold remake of the Flash Gordon serial that would be more ambitious than anything that had been done before. When Lucas and Coppola left the meeting where they were ultimately denied the Flash Gordon rights, Coppola tried to console his protégé by telling him they could try again. Lucas reportedly said that it was fine, and that if the story took place in space they wouldn’t need the rights. Thus began the Star Wars saga, a story which has brought together generations of communities around the world. Star Wars for Everyone For some people, Star Wars is just a fun way to spend a few hours. For many others, it’s become much more. It’s a chance to spend time with family, an excuse to spend the whole night waiting outside the theater in costumes with friends, or an opportunity to grow with a set of characters many of us have come to appreciate. The production team behind Star Wars was operating on a limited budget, and they had to get a little creative at times. The sound of a TIE engine, for instance, is an elephant’s bellow mixed with a car driving on wet pavement. And the famous lightsaber hum? It’s just the sound of a picture tube from an old television.
