The three-day event kicked off at Manchester Central Library where a three-metre high illuminated 'Recovery Poem' captured the imagination of passing workers, shoppers and visitors. The Corridor stretches a sure mile south of the library in St Peter's Square and covered the city's innovation district and home to its diverse and international community. READ MORE: Bonfire Night celebrations and firework displays in Manchester CANCELLED It is an area steeped in academic, literary, musical and political history and organisers are trumpeting its 'unique concentration of knowledge, business and cultural assets'. It got underway with the arrival of the 'Recovery Poems' accompanied by choral singing from the LGBTQ+ low voice choir, The Sunday Boys, in the library's Reading Room. Oxford Road Corridor ‘Corridor of Light’, It was followed by 'Made in Manchester', a community poem in 65 different languages, including the performance of two specially-commissioned new stanzas, written by communities working with Manchester Poetry Library at Manchester Metropolitan University. It is a living composition, led by local poet Zahid Hussain, which will eventually represent every language spoken in the city. PROMOTED STORIES Tomorrow (Friday, October 22) there is the chance to join the 'live algorave' at Hatch from 6pm to 10pm. It is a combination of 'algorithms' and 'rave' - an opportunity to dance to alien rhythms and freaky visuals, call created from code. The practice of making electronic music visible taps into algorithmic music’s long history – opened up with live coding technology over the past decade. Meanwhile, on Friday and Saturday, also between 6pm and 10pm there is a collection of handcrafted fire sculptures which turns an empty lot close to HOME into an otherworldly landscape of flame-lined paths, shimmering shapes and heat. Award-winning pioneers of outdoor art Walk the Plank have collaborated with HOME to bring the Fire Garden to the former site of Homeground. No booking is required. Manchester's newest neighbourhood Circle Square, bathed in a spectacle of thousands of spots of light from Studio Vertigo's giant, heart-shaped mirror ball, Our Beating Heart A spokesperson said of the Corridor of Light: "It embodies the innovative and international spirit of Manchester as the home of many of its most significant arts and educational institutions – from University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester City Council, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Bruntwood, Manchester Science Partnerships, HOME, and the Royal Northern College of Music. "It is also surrounded by many beautiful green spaces, bustling restaurants and bars. "It is where groundbreaking and life-changing discoveries and cultural and creative innovation have and continue to take place – from the splitting of Rutherford’s Atom to the more recent discovery of graphene. In recent years the area has also been transformed by significant levels of investment." This inaugural three-day event has been created in partnership with the Corridor’s many venues and institutions. The spokesperson added: "Entirely free to attend, and running from 6pm to 10pm across the three nights – Corridor of Light will bring together artists, writers, students, poets, and performers, to tell their stories of Oxford Road. "With a focus on language, music, light and ideas, this special series of events and experiences will bring to life the Corridor’s unique constellation of knowledge and culture, championing the area’s change-makers, both past and present."
