Bruno Lozano was born and raised in the small border town of Del Rio, Texas, but
wanted to see more of the world so he joined the U.S. Air Force. It was during
his travels that he found a community of people who came to know him for who he
was: a man with many identities, including being a member of the LGBTQ+
community.

As Lozano told Spectrum News 1, “As I got older I realized, there’s a lot of
other attributes and there’s a lot of layers to me and it’s not just being gay
and I don’t have to identify as gay as an introduction.” While that was true,
being gay was an identity he didn't want to hide under the “Don’t ask, Don’t
tell” policy. So, instead of re-enlisting at his term’s end, he returned home to
the family and Tex-Mex roots that he had missed.

The Second Chapter of Lozano’s Story
Back in Del Rio, Lozano dove into being a community activist, helping to clean
up local waterways. He then decided to run for mayor. In 2018, he was elected,
winning 61 percent of the vote. His election made him the first openly gay mayor
of Del Rio and elected official in Val Verde County.

He used his position to improve border conditions, enact safe COVID-19 policies,
and promote economic growth in the area. He also helped with the town’s first
Pride event in 2019 and has worked with the nonprofit Del Rio SAFE, which stands
for Sexuality Advocacy for Everyone.

He also performed in drag on the HBO TV show We’re Here, a show focused on
promoting LGBTQ+ stories in small towns so those who lack the representation in
their own hometowns can see others like them finding success in their lives.
Lozano said he had no nerves prior to his performance and believed in what he
was doing because it can save lives:

“Stonewall happened because drag queens and a minority group stood up to
animosity, and I had to go back in the closet [while in the Air Force] because
of that same hatred,” he told IntoMore.com during his mayoral run. “I know what
that was like, and it translates to today’s campaign. I’m not going to bow down.
I am who I am. Accept me or not.”

Watch: Bruno Lozano wants to create a space for all people. Great Big Story
profiled him in a series about Latinx excellence around the U.S. Listen in to
more of his inspirational story here.

In 2007, four students at Stanford University School of Medicine founded the
LGBT Medical Education Research Group to help healthcare providers give better
care to their patients from the LGBTQ+ community. In one project, they collected
stories from patients and providers from the LGBTQ+ community to share with
others, hoping the increased exposure would lead to greater empathy.

Just Because It's Intereseting: The HBO show, We're Here, was nominated for a
Primetime Emmy award in 2020 and won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding
Reality program in 2021. It stars RuPaul's Drag Race contestants Bob the Drag
Queen, Eureka O'Hara, and Shangela and has been renewed for a third season. HBO
EVP of Programming Nina Rosenstein said, "Drag is about confidence and self
expression. We are so thrilled to showcase the transformative power of the art
form with our audience."
