Uncertainties regarding SARS-CoV-2 transmission led to worries experienced by women and health professionals which impacted breastfeeding plans. Researchers aimed to investigate the impact of self-reported and country-specific factors on breastfeeding rates during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study shows that mother's COVID-19 diagnosis and changes in healthcare and birth/postnatal plans did not influence breastfeeding rates. Virtual support groups help women manage breastfeeding, particularly when their experiencing a first child and for those under psychiatric treatment. WATCH VIDEO Point of care obstetric ultrasound knowledge retention among midwives following a training program BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth Obstetric ultrasound has become a routine part of antenatal care in many parts of the world, including low income settings. However, there is a shortage of radiologists and sonographers to perform routine obstetric scans in many areas especially in the rural settings of low income countries, despite having equipment available to do this. As a result, point of care ultrasound has been suggested to bridge this gap by training other health workers such as midwives to perform basic obstetric ultrasound as part of their clinical care. This pilot study has demonstrated that training midwives in point of care obstetric ultrasound can result into acceptable levels of knowledge retention that assist the midwives to apply this knowledge when making routine clinical decisions in relation to pregnant women. Breastfeeding: Crucially important, but increasingly challenged in a market-driven world The Lancet In this Series paper, researchers examine how mother and baby attributes at the individual level interact with breastfeeding determinants at other levels, how these interactions drive breastfeeding outcomes, and what policies and interventions are necessary to achieve optimal breastfeeding. READ MORE Supporting pregnant and parenting women who use alcohol during pregnancy Women's Health The aim of this study was to synthesize peer-reviewed research regarding how trauma-informed approaches can be used and are helpful for pregnant and parenting women, specifically those using alcohol. As such, authors recognize how alcohol use and mothering are uniquely positioned, stigmatized, and represented in public discourse. In this study, researchers briefly discuss how: (1) relationships and trust are central to trauma-informed care; (2) how alcohol differs from other substances in applying trauma-informed care, but also how the trauma-informed approaches and practices in the context of populations are not well-represented in the literature; and (3) how trauma-informed care is an inherent part of culturally safe practices. Women with PAC are more likely to have serious maternal complications. While their babies are not at increased risk of perinatal mortality, they are more likely to experience poorer perinatal outcomes associated with preterm birth. The higher rate of birth intervention among women with gestational cancers reflects the complexity of clinical decision-making in this context. LEARN MORE Women's reflections on timing of motherhood Reproductive Health In this meta-synthesis, researchers investigated reflections on timing of motherhood in women who have not yet had children. Women of reproductive age are aware that they must make a life-changing decision as to if or when to have children, but they consider having children at "the right time" to be important. Simultaneously, while some women are reluctant to have children for various reasons, they express fear that waiting too long could result in their regretting not having children later in life. READ MORE Reclassification of the etiology of infant mortality with whole-genome sequencing JAMA Network Open What proportion of infant mortality is explained by genetic diseases? In this cohort study of 112 infant deaths, single-locus genetic diseases were the most common antecedent of infant mortality. Treatments positively associated with outcomes were available for 30 percent of these genetic diseases. The study results suggest that because treatable genetic diseases are associated with considerable infant mortality, strategies for neonatal diagnosis may be associated with decreased infant mortality. Findings show that women with previous adverse pregnancy outcomes do not suffer from stress in subsequent pregnancies more than women with normal obstetric histories. Healthcare professionals need to be aware that interindividual variation in stress during pregnancy is considerable. LEARN MORE Pre-pregnancy body mass index and adverse perinatal outcomes in the presence of other maternal risk factors AJOG Global Reports High pre-pregnancy body-mass-index is one of the most common risk factors for adverse perinatal events. The aim of this study was to assess whether the association between maternal BMI and adverse perinatal outcome is modified by other concomitant maternal risk factors. Women with elevated pre-pregnancy BMI are at increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes, and the magnitude of these risks differs by concomitant risk factors including pre-pregnancy diabetes mellitus, chronic hypertension and nulliparity.
