LOST IN FREEDOM is a two hours drama mainly set in The Philippines, Portugal,
Bali and London about the contemporary phenomenon of the rising international
digital nomad culture. Through three stories we explore a lifestyle where an
ordinary Wednesday seems like a postcard sent from a beach vacation with a note,
I’m never coming back from paradise.

MARK

INTO THE WILD – Directed by Deny Boyle – 2000 20TH Century Fox

Dutch engineer MARK wakes up in Portugal with a half-severed finger. He’s a
failure – running from his career and home when his marriage breaks down. He’s
bitter and lost until he’s scooped up by a scruffy charmer and his laid-back
acolytes touting a new way of life. Is this Mark’s chance of happiness? He tags
along as his finger turns septic.

LOLA

THE WHITE LOTUS SERIES – Directed by Mike White – 2021 HBO Entertainment

Italian LOLA is an Insta goddess, inspirational and independent as she posts her
upbeat travel blogs from ever more exotic locations. But adventure barely
figures in her goals. She’s criss-crossing the planet to track down the father
of her unborn child, a man whose message has made him a globally-acclaimed
business and lifestyle guru. Will he even acknowledge her now?

PHIL

BODYGUARD – Directed by Thomas Vincent – 2018 BBC One

UK Designer PHIL is in heaven, diving with new friends and whale sharks off the
Philippines’ coast when a call from his London office lures him home to complete
the last three items on his ’30 before 30’ bucket list: Creative Directorship,
City penthouse, company Porsche. So why do his migraines return? Why’s he only
euphoric when hallucinating oceans of whale sharks?

RYAN

THE BEACH – Directed by Deny Boyle – 2000 20TH Century Fox

Connecting them all is RYAN, a US beach-bum entrepreneur who cleans up his act
to evangelise the digital nomad concept: swap your 9-5 rut for liberty and
wealth in paradise. Live where you please, love as you choose, make your fortune
from a laptop by the pool. Beneath his maverick spiel, he’s one step ahead of
the crowd he woos.

CONCEPT

We all love to binge the Trouble in Paradise genre – the bleak disappointment
and danger beneath every idyll reassures us our humdrum lives are not so bad.
But, while most of us could never earn enough to book into a White Lotus resort
or up sticks in pursuit of a grail like The Beach, we are increasingly working
from home on our laptops: Ryan’s utopia is tantalisingly within our reach.

Are Mark, Phil, Lola and Ryan heading bravely towards a blissful future or
running away from what make us who we are? Are they really happier than us?

WHAT IS A DIGITAL

NOMAD?

A digital nomad is someone who decides to give up his home, gets rid of his
belongings and travels around the world working remotely from a laptop. He
rebels against social constraints like marriage, taxation, real estate, in
pursuit of ultimate freedom.

THE STORY

THE STORY

PHIL and LOLA’s stories happen in the present. MARK’s story is set four years
ago. RYAN connects all three.

ACT 1

In The Philippines, PHIL’s in heaven, celebrating his 29th birthday swimming
among whale sharks. But three goals on his ‘30 before 30’ bucket list remain:
Creative Director, company car, penthouse. So when London calls with a
challenge, he rejects paradise and flies home. Meanwhile, on the beach his new
friend MARK oversees construction of a dream co-living for digital nomad guru
RYAN.

On a swing over Bali’s paddy fields, travel blogger LOLA poses for photos.
Behind her curated idyll, her real goal is to find RYAN, the father of her
unborn child. But he’s gone viral as the go-to guru for the digital nomad
lifestyle and loving the attention it brings. Lola’s dream of rekindling an
instagrammable romance with him is challenged, not least by stunning, celebrated
influencer, IRINA.

MARK’s cosy, stable life is shattered when his wife JOANNA files for divorce. He
flees Amsterdam, heartbroken and aimless, nursing a serious finger wound wrapped
in Joanna’s scarf. He drives at random, ending up at a hotel in Portugal where
Ryan and his tribe offer him a new direction: nomadic luxury lifestyle, free
love. He despises it but with nothing to lose, he joins them anyway.

ACT 2

In London, Phil hooks up with his ex, TILLY, and ruthlessly succeeds at all
three final life goals, but he’s never been more miserable: he’s plagued with
migraines and dreams of whale sharks. At Ryan’s Ted talk on digital nomadic
living, he’s intrigued by the claim: poach just one client from your corporate
network to launch your beachside freelance life. Phil pitches secretly to his
company’s major new client, and wins him over.

In Bali, Lola’s fantasy of forming an insta-perfect nomad family with Ryan hits
rock bottom when she falls into raw sewage while spying on Ryan and Irina
flirting at a party. Irina tells her that Ryan’s life plan is to marry an Ivy
League scientist and install her in his Philippine beach home while he jet-sets.
Lola responds by winning Ryan back. But their weekend-long date is hell, as she
hides morning sickness, tolerates his extreme ideas of ‘fun’, finally realising
he’s not serious about her and has zero interest in fatherhood.

In Portugal, Mark and Ryan set up a new business to provide live-work bases for
nomads. Ryan reinvents himself as a slick tech-lifestyle guru to seal their
first co-living real estate deal but Mark keeps hallucinating his lost life with
Joanna – delusions caused by sepsis from his wound. He rages at a party and
smashes a window. Ryan takes him to hospital where his finger is amputated. When
he recovers, Mark finally accepts his old life is dead.

ACT 3

In Bali’s balmy seas, Lola floats, letting Ryan’s photo loose on the waves as
she creates a new life goal. She calls her mother for reassurance about what
truly matters now: will she ever gain a million followers on Instagram? Back in
Portugal, recovering from an abortion, she posts her latest, ‘My Perfect Bali
Life’ blog. Her stats have grown.

Mark returns to his deserted home in Amsterdam. A handsaw on the bloodstained
kitchen counter reminds him of trying to cut off his wedding ring the night he
ran away. He signs the divorce papers and puts the house up for sale. From a
Himalayan tent, he joins a raucous Zoom call with the nomads all obsessing and
begging him to join them so they can get bulk discount on a hotel.

In The Philippines, Phil and Tilly are on a boat when he learns his one client
has backed out. He has no income now, no plan at all. In shock, he dives and the
ocean’s beauty soothes him. On the beach, Ryan’s luxury co-living is now
complete, new Ivy League girlfriend installed. The nomads may have problems like
everyone else, but when they close their laptops, they are free to dive, swim
and play volleyball as the sun sets on paradise.

LOCATIONS

As this film is about people who are constantly on the move, locations are
important as they shape them becoming integral to how they define themselves.

As this film is about people who are constantly on the move, locations are
important as they shape them becoming integral to how they define themselves.

PORTUGAL

HEART OF STONE – Directed by Tom Harper – Netflix

The cobbled streets of Lisbon with white houses climbing on the hills, the
ceramic tiles of Miraduro St Lucia, the grey stones of the Castle of São Jorge
belong to old fashioned Europe. The architecture is still attached to a glorious
past just like Mark is not willing to ditch his old habits and life.

BALI

EAT PRAY LOVE – Directed by Ryan Murphy – 2010 Columbia Pic

Bali’s tropical jungles, dark green valleys and endless rice fields reflect
Lola’s natural beauty, which she takes for granted, unaware of the impact she
has on those around her. The rich vegetation also hints at her fertility. The
Balinese homes with their intricately carved wood and stone, and their
immaculate gardens, echo her desire to craft the raw material of life into
something perfect for the world to admire.

LONDON

BODYGUARD – Directed by Thomas Vincent – 2018 BBC One

London’s harsh corporate architecture fits Phil’s heartless attitude to his
career. His feet never touch the earth – he’s in office towers and penthouses,
constantly climbing the ladder. But the soaring steel and sheet glass is an
illusion of freedom – he’s in a fish bowl, trapped, dreaming of the ocean.

THE PHILIPPINES

THE BEACH – Directed by Deny Boyle – 2000 20TH Century Fox

The Philippines’ turquoise sea, white sand and palm trees define Ryan’s ideal
escape from urban grind. It’s simple and perfect, like his clear faith in the
digital nomad lifestyle. As Ryan looks out from his villa over his private bay
on Apo Island – a scene so idyllic, if we were there we’d ask: am I still on
this planet or have I reached heaven?

ARTISTIC INFLUENCE & DIRECTOR’S ATTRIBUTES

LOST IN FREEDOM is seeking a director in love with the European cinematic
tradition. The screenplay connects to the pace and aesthetics of European
cinema, giving as much personality and meaning to places as to the characters.
While writing, Paolo Sorrentino frequently influenced my vision, – the opening
images from Hand of God with bird’s eye views along the coast of Naples and into
its chaotic streets; the long shot of a speedboat cutting through the dense
Mediterranean Sea.

Lost in Freedom’s multiple locations and ensemble cast will appeal to a director
who excels at gelling an international cast and crew.

THE HAND OF GOD – Directed by Paolo Sorrentino – 2021 Netflix

THE WRITER

In July 2020, mid-pandemic, I gave up my career as an international architect
based in Brussels to take a year off and write. I needed a new environment to
stimulate the stories I had in mind so followed a friend to Lisbon, working
there happily until new lockdown rules restricted us again.

My friend’s solution was to book into Madeira’s 5* Savoy Hotel at a vast
pandemic-induced discount. Madeira’s long warm January days felt like freedom
again as we made instant friends among the 50 guests in this resort for 2000.
The others all called themselves digital nomads – a term I’d never heard.
Countless karaoke nights, ad hoc parties at the idyllic infinity pool
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, group hikes in the tropical mountains allowed me
inside their world. Fascinated, I bombarded them with questions about their
lifestyle and philosophy, their true reasons for seeking freedom.

I stayed in Madeira until Spring, completed my short story collection and
achieved my first publication but when I returned to Lisbon, the nomads stayed
in my mind because I was intrigued by their detachment from Western societal
norms – openly rejecting everything from homes, jobs, possessions to monogamous
relationships and taxation. Nomadic characters and the backstories that
propelled them soon filled my imagination.

After the pandemic I moved between Lisbon, Brussels and Southeast Asia, seeing
nomads everywhere, eavesdropping on them in bars, restaurants, co-workings and
co-livings. The filmscript to Lost in Freedom came to me without hesitation and
I’m now developing its characters and plotlines in a novel.
