The short acronym ARP stands for Address Resolution Protocol, and it represents
a network layer protocol that maps a constantly changing Internet Protocol (IP)
address to a fixed physical machine address - a Media Access Control (MAC)

ARP was first described in 1982 by RFC 826 and instantly became a vital element
of network communications. Through the years, the protocol has evolved in order
to support the latest technologies and protocols.

The ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) is highly important for the proper
operation of IP networks. That is because it facilitates communication between
devices on a local network by mapping IP addresses to physical (MAC) addresses.
On the other hand, mapping is needed for data transmission at the Data Link
Layer, where communication occurs using MAC addresses instead of IP addresses.

Without ARP, devices will be incapable of identifying each other on a particular
network, and communication cannot be achieved. Besides, ARP helps in detecting
duplicate IP addresses on a network, which can cause communication issues if not
resolved.
