OFFSHORE (NOVEL)

Offshore (1979) is a novel by Penelope Fitzgerald. It won the Booker Prize for
that year. It recalls her time spent on boats on the Thames in Battersea. The
novel explores the liminality of people who do not belong to the land or the
sea, but are somewhere in between. The epigraph, "che mena il vento, e che batte
la pioggia, e che s'incontran con si aspre lingue" ("whom the wind drives, or
whom the rain beats, or those who clash with such bitter tongues") comes from
Canto XI of Dante's Inferno.

Every client wants to get their offshore software team going quickly. In this
video, Dave discusses ways to grow the team without chaos or killing morale.
http://www.SourceSeek.com - Connect WIth Top Offshore Software Teams Every
client wants to get their offshore software team going as quickly as possible.
If we grow the team too quickly, however, we can wind up with chaos and
disorganization and reduced morale and productivity. In this video, Dave talks
about the best way to expand your offshore software team as quickly as possible
by engaging the team lead and partnering with them to guide the team growth. The
leader of the offshore team has the most visibility into team dynamics,
personalities, and productivity so he or she will be the most able to support
your decisions. It's critical to let the team lead have input on when and how to
add new members to the team. If you push your offshore team to grow too quickly,
it's the offshore team lead that will have the real challenge in meeting your
needs. That lead will need to train and coach each new team member and if the
growth becomes unmanageable, you run the risk of crushing the morale and
productivity of the team lead, which can be a disaster. In addition to
leveraging the team lead as you ramp up, it's important to make every effort to
engage every team member as much as possible so that you can learn their
personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. This is a great morale and team
builder, but it also provides you with critical visibility into the real team
dynamics - a big plus when your offshore software development team is 5000 miles
away. SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR MORE OUTSOURCING VIDEO TIPS AND NEWS!

HOW TO RECRUIT A SUPERSTAR OFFSHORE TEAM FOR YOUR BUSINESS

So you have selected an Offshore Staffing provider and are now ready to get
stuck into the world of business process outsourcing in a serious way. All that
is left is to recruit your all-important team members. Here are the steps you
can take to make sure the recruitment process is a success. Calibrate Your
Requirements With Your Offshore Staffing Provider Your offshore staffing
provider or BPO company will do all the initial sourcing of candidates for you.
Therefore it is very important to have a calibration session with them. In this
session, you need to make sure that it is not only the recruitment managers that
have a clear understanding of your needs but also the actual recruiters on the
ground talking to potential applicants. Work History & Reasons For Leaving
Previous Employers When you recruit team members from a different country like
the Philippines, you will notice there are a few intricacies when it comes to
people's work histories. We take a closer look at a few of them. Qualifications
Different To Their Field Of Work A classic example of this would be people who
have studied to be Teachers or Nurses but are applying for jobs as Customer
Service Representatives in a contact centre. Why does this happen? Firstly,
unlike countries like Australia or the US, the course studied at university can
often be driven by the family, especially as the parents are the ones paying for
tuition. Teaching & Nursing is thought of as desirable due to the ability to
work abroad. The reality is the local salary for these jobs is very low when
compared to working in the BPO industry. As such, these graduates tend to
gravitate to the BPO industry as they need money now. Have open discussions with
them - you don't want to lose them suddenly as they move abroad or get pressured
into finishing partially completed degrees. Large Gaps In Employment If an
applicant has large gaps in employment on their CV, you need to get a proper
explanation and make sure the reason makes sense. Some of the common reasons for
the gaps in employment you will get include: They had to take time off to care
for a sick family member They "needed a break" and had health issues like
hypertension They started a business, typically a small "sari-sari" store that
sells small items like snacks and drinks. If there is a trend of always needing
breaks from full-time work there is a good chance this will continue. Health
Issues If one of the reasons for the gaps in employment was due to their own
health, you can be at ease that your Offshore Staffing partner will have them
undertake a full medical to ensure they are fit to work. Look out for health
reasons like hypertension though. It is a very common reason for being absent
regularly from the office. Understand An Applicants Family Support Structure
Family is big in many of the countries that are prominent for providing offshore
staffing solutions. Often, one person in the family is working and supporting
elderly parents. General health is not as good as in some western countries due
to poor diets. Low incomes mean they are often eating unhealthy food. It is also
a sad truth that in a lot of these countries, there is a very high percentage of
single parents. Why does this matter? It is because when someone falls ill your
team member is going to need time off work to take care of them. In the case of
single parents, they are often reliant on support from nannies or other family
members to look after their kids. The problem is these people are not always
reliable resulting in a lot of unexpected days off. Some of your best people
will be single parents, so you can't rule them out. What you can do is talk to
them about their support structure so you can have confidence that absenteeism
will be minimal and they have several reliable options. Check Pronunciation Of
Important Words This might seem a little picky, but make sure the people you
hire can say important words correctly, like your company name. Check Written
English Skills Generally, verbal skills will be acceptable, but if the role you
are filling needs them to write emails or letters to customers then you
absolutely must have some written English assessments built into your screening
and assessment process. Written skills are on average much worse than verbal
skills. Do Some Basic Aptitude Tests Some simple critical thinking,
problem-solving and general knowledge questions can go a long way when it comes
to filtering applicants. Wrap Up On Recruiting Your Offshore Team In offshore
staffing countries, you have a talent pool of millions, so your screening
process is important to make sure you hire the gems among the pack. The good
news is when you partner with a quality BPO company they will execute the
screening process for you but stay involved to ensure some of these common
pitfalls are avoided. If you do, you will have a team of superstars to launch
your offshore team and grow your business.

likes to work, what they bring to the table, and their hopes and dreams for that
'perfect vendor'. The way a client handles workflow and communications, for
example, is a pivotal factor in the software team's experience. If there isn't
good alignment between the two client and the team, small miscommunications will
escalate, stress will emerge, and eventually fingers will inevitably be pointed.
Even a simple cultural misalignment can lead to trouble. Imagine a client who
expects daily responses to emails, regardless of importance. That client will
quickly get frustrated with a vendor who chooses to prioritize emails by true
urgency. The vendor may be doing a great job keeping the project on track by
choosing wisely how to invest their time, but the client will still see their
work as lacking. On the vendor side, we similarly look at the company direction,
vision, personality, and more. We also consider one thing that is frequently
forgotten - the vendor's profit. So many clients don't take the time to consider
the profitability of their development partner, but they should! Even the best
software teams have to carefully manage their resources, and will always seek to
put their best resources on the most lucrative project. So if you aren't making
sure that your project is profitable for the vendor, you might find yourself
competing with other projects for resources and attention. Another thing to
remember is the morale of the team. A perfect-fit client can be profitable for a
vendor without killing morale on the developer team, because the team likes both
the work and the client. There are always plenty of great teams that will accept
just about any client because, in most cases, they need the money. But, this
isn't a recipe for a long-lasting and lucrative relationship. Only when there is
real mutual benefit can a relationship go long term and maintain quality. With
20 years of experience working with great clients and the best software teams,
we've gotten pretty good putting together the 'happy marriages' that both
clients and vendors want! SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR MORE OUTSOURCING VIDEO TIPS AND

Every client wants to get their offshore software team going quickly. In this
video, Dave discusses ways to grow the team without chaos or killing morale.
http://www.SourceSeek.com - Connect WIth Top Offshore Software Teams Every
client wants to get their offshore software team going as quickly as
possible. If we grow the team too quickly, however, we can wind up with chaos
and disorganization and reduced morale and productivity. In this video, Dave
talks about the best way to expand your offshore software team as quickly as
possible by engaging the team lead and partnering with them to guide the team
growth. The leader of the offshore team has the most visibility into team
dynamics, personalities, and productivity so he or she will be the most able
to support your decisions. It's critical to let the team lead have input on
when and how to add new members to the team. If you push your offshore team
to grow too quickly, it's the offshore team lead that will have the real
challenge in meeting your needs. That lead will need to train and coach each
new team member and if the growth becomes unmanageable, you run the risk of
crushing the morale and productivity of the team lead, which can be a
disaster. In addition to leveraging the team lead as you ramp up, it's
important to make every effort to engage every team member as much as
possible so that you can learn their personalities, strengths, and
weaknesses. This is a great morale and team builder, but it also provides you
with critical visibility into the real team dynamics - a big plus when your
offshore software development team is 5000 miles away. SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR MORE

So you have selected an Offshore Staffing provider and are now ready to get
stuck into the world of business process outsourcing in a serious way. All
that is left is to recruit your all-important team members. Here are the
steps you can take to make sure the recruitment process is a success.
Calibrate Your Requirements With Your Offshore Staffing Provider Your
offshore staffing provider or BPO company will do all the initial sourcing of
candidates for you. Therefore it is very important to have a calibration
session with them. In this session, you need to make sure that it is not only
the recruitment managers that have a clear understanding of your needs but
also the actual recruiters on the ground talking to potential applicants.
Work History & Reasons For Leaving Previous Employers When you recruit team
members from a different country like the Philippines, you will notice there
are a few intricacies when it comes to people's work histories. We take a
closer look at a few of them. Qualifications Different To Their Field Of Work
A classic example of this would be people who have studied to be Teachers or
Nurses but are applying for jobs as Customer Service Representatives in a
contact centre. Why does this happen? Firstly, unlike countries like
Australia or the US, the course studied at university can often be driven by
the family, especially as the parents are the ones paying for tuition.
Teaching & Nursing is thought of as desirable due to the ability to work
abroad. The reality is the local salary for these jobs is very low when
compared to working in the BPO industry. As such, these graduates tend to
gravitate to the BPO industry as they need money now. Have open discussions
with them - you don't want to lose them suddenly as they move abroad or get
pressured into finishing partially completed degrees. Large Gaps In
Employment If an applicant has large gaps in employment on their CV, you need
to get a proper explanation and make sure the reason makes sense. Some of the
common reasons for the gaps in employment you will get include: They had to
take time off to care for a sick family member They "needed a break" and had
health issues like hypertension They started a business, typically a small
"sari-sari" store that sells small items like snacks and drinks. If there is
a trend of always needing breaks from full-time work there is a good chance
this will continue. Health Issues If one of the reasons for the gaps in
employment was due to their own health, you can be at ease that your Offshore
Staffing partner will have them undertake a full medical to ensure they are
fit to work. Look out for health reasons like hypertension though. It is a
very common reason for being absent regularly from the office. Understand An
Applicants Family Support Structure Family is big in many of the countries
that are prominent for providing offshore staffing solutions. Often, one
person in the family is working and supporting elderly parents. General
health is not as good as in some western countries due to poor diets. Low
incomes mean they are often eating unhealthy food. It is also a sad truth
that in a lot of these countries, there is a very high percentage of single
parents. Why does this matter? It is because when someone falls ill your team
member is going to need time off work to take care of them. In the case of
single parents, they are often reliant on support from nannies or other
family members to look after their kids. The problem is these people are not
always reliable resulting in a lot of unexpected days off. Some of your best
people will be single parents, so you can't rule them out. What you can do is
talk to them about their support structure so you can have confidence that
absenteeism will be minimal and they have several reliable options. Check
Pronunciation Of Important Words This might seem a little picky, but make
sure the people you hire can say important words correctly, like your company
name. Check Written English Skills Generally, verbal skills will be
acceptable, but if the role you are filling needs them to write emails or
letters to customers then you absolutely must have some written English
assessments built into your screening and assessment process. Written skills
are on average much worse than verbal skills. Do Some Basic Aptitude Tests
Some simple critical thinking, problem-solving and general knowledge
questions can go a long way when it comes to filtering applicants. Wrap Up On
Recruiting Your Offshore Team In offshore staffing countries, you have a
talent pool of millions, so your screening process is important to make sure
you hire the gems among the pack. The good news is when you partner with a
quality BPO company they will execute the screening process for you but stay
involved to ensure some of these common pitfalls are avoided. If you do, you
will have a team of superstars to launch your offshore team and grow your
   business.

Matching clients with the best software teams is both a science and an art -
here's how we do it at SourceSeek. http://www.SourceSeek.com Connect With
Top Offshore Software Teams today. Matching clients with the best software
teams requires us to dig deep and find the true motivations, strengths, and
personality of each party. We invest a lot of time into learning how a client
likes to work, what they bring to the table, and their hopes and dreams for
that 'perfect vendor'. The way a client handles workflow and communications,
for example, is a pivotal factor in the software team's experience. If there
isn't good alignment between the two client and the team, small
miscommunications will escalate, stress will emerge, and eventually fingers
will inevitably be pointed. Even a simple cultural misalignment can lead to
trouble. Imagine a client who expects daily responses to emails, regardless
of importance. That client will quickly get frustrated with a vendor who
chooses to prioritize emails by true urgency. The vendor may be doing a great
job keeping the project on track by choosing wisely how to invest their time,
but the client will still see their work as lacking. On the vendor side, we
similarly look at the company direction, vision, personality, and more. We
also consider one thing that is frequently forgotten - the vendor's profit.
So many clients don't take the time to consider the profitability of their
development partner, but they should! Even the best software teams have to
carefully manage their resources, and will always seek to put their best
resources on the most lucrative project. So if you aren't making sure that
your project is profitable for the vendor, you might find yourself competing
with other projects for resources and attention. Another thing to remember is
the morale of the team. A perfect-fit client can be profitable for a vendor
without killing morale on the developer team, because the team likes both the
work and the client. There are always plenty of great teams that will accept
just about any client because, in most cases, they need the money. But, this

Every client wants to get their offshore software team going quickly. In this
video, Dave discusses ways to grow the team without chaos or killing morale.
http:// www. SourceSeek. com - Connect WIth Top Offshore Software Teams Every
client wants to get their offshore software team going as quickly as
possible. If we grow the team too quickly, however, we can wind up with
chaos and disorganization and reduced morale and productivity. In this
video, Dave talks about the best way to expand your offshore software team as
quickly as possible by engaging the team lead and partnering with them to
guide the team growth. The leader of the offshore team has the most
visibility into team dynamics, personalities, and productivity so
he or she will be the most able to support your decisions. It's critical to
let the team lead have input on when and how to add new members to the team. If
you push your offshore team to grow too quickly, it's the offshore team lead
that will have the real challenge in meeting your needs. That lead will need
to train and coach each new team member and if the growth becomes
unmanageable, you run the risk of crushing the morale and productivity
of the team lead, which can be a disaster. In addition to leveraging the
team lead as you ramp up, it's important to make every effort to engage
every team member as much as possible so that you can learn their
personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. This is a great morale and team
builder, but it also provides you with critical visibility into the real
team dynamics - a big plus when your offshore software development team
is 5000 miles away.

All
that is left is to recruit your all-important team members. Here are the
steps you can take to make sure the recruitment process is a success.
Calibrate Your Requirements With Your Offshore Staffing Provider Your
offshore staffing provider or BPO company will do all the initial sourcing
of candidates for you. Therefore it is very important to have a
calibration session with them. In this session, you need to make sure that
it is not only the recruitment managers that have a clear understanding of
your needs but also the actual recruiters on the ground talking to
potential applicants. Work History & Reasons For Leaving Previous
Employers When you recruit team members from a different country like the
Philippines, you will notice there are a few intricacies when it comes to
people's work histories. We take a closer look at a few of them.
Qualifications Different To Their Field Of Work A classic example of
this would be people who have studied to be Teachers or Nurses but are
applying for jobs as Customer Service Representatives in a contact
centre. Why does this happen? Firstly, unlike countries like Australia or
the US, the course studied at university can often be driven by the
family, especially as the parents are the ones paying for tuition.
Teaching & Nursing is thought of as desirable due to the ability to work
abroad. The reality is the local salary for these jobs is very low when
compared to working in the BPO industry. As such, these graduates tend to
gravitate to the BPO industry as they need money now. Have open
discussions with them - you don't want to lose them suddenly as they move
abroad or get pressured into finishing partially completed degrees.
Large Gaps In Employment If an applicant has large gaps in employment on
their CV, you need to get a proper explanation and make sure the reason
makes sense. Some of the common reasons for the gaps in employment you will
get include: They had to take time off to care for a sick family member They
"needed a break" and had health issues like hypertension They started a
business, typically a small "sari-sari" store that sells small items like
snacks and drinks. If there is a trend of always needing breaks from full-time
work there is a good chance this will continue. Health Issues If one of the
reasons for the gaps in employment was due to their own health, you can be at
ease that your Offshore Staffing partner will have them undertake a full
medical to ensure they are fit to work. Look out for health reasons like
hypertension though. It is a very common reason for being absent
regularly from the office. Understand An Applicants Family Support
Structure Family is big in many of the countries that are prominent for
providing offshore staffing solutions. Often, one person in the family
is working and supporting elderly parents. General health is not as good
as in some western countries due to poor diets. Low incomes mean they are
often eating unhealthy food. It is also a sad truth that in a lot of these
countries, there is a very high percentage of single parents. Why does this
matter? It is because when someone falls ill your team member is going to
need time off work to take care of them. In the case of single parents, they
are often reliant on support from nannies or other family members to look
after their kids. The problem is these people are not always reliable
resulting in a lot of unexpected days off. Some of your best people will
be single parents, so you can't rule them out. What you can do is talk to them
about their support structure so you can have confidence that absenteeism
will be minimal and they have several reliable options. Check
Pronunciation Of Important Words This might seem a little picky, but make
sure the people you hire can say important words correctly, like your
company name. Check Written English Skills Generally, verbal skills will
be acceptable, but if the role you are filling needs them to write emails or
letters to customers then you absolutely must have some written English
assessments built into your screening and assessment process. Written
skills are on average much worse than verbal skills. Do Some Basic Aptitude
Tests Some simple critical thinking, problem-solving and general
knowledge questions can go a long way when it comes to filtering
applicants. Wrap Up On Recruiting Your Offshore Team In offshore staffing
countries, you have a talent pool of millions, so your screening process is
important to make sure you hire the gems among the pack. The good news is when
you partner with a quality BPO company they will execute the screening
process for you but stay involved to ensure some of these common pitfalls
are avoided. If you do, you will have a team of superstars to launch your
offshore team and grow your business.

FINDING THE PERFECT OFFSHORE DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Matching clients with the best software teams is both a science and an art -
here's how we do it at SourceSeek. http:// www. SourceSeek. com Connect With
Top Offshore Software Teams today. Matching clients with the best software
teams requires us to dig deep and find the true motivations, strengths, and
personality of each party. We invest a lot of time into learning how a
client likes to work, what they bring to the table, and their hopes and dreams
for that 'perfect vendor'. The way a client handles workflow and
communications, for example, is a pivotal factor in the software team's
experience. If there isn't good alignment between the two client and the
team, small miscommunications will escalate, stress will emerge, and
eventually fingers will inevitably be pointed. Even a simple cultural
misalignment can lead to trouble. Imagine a client who expects daily
responses to emails, regardless of importance. That client will quickly
get frustrated with a vendor who chooses to prioritize emails by true
urgency. The vendor may be doing a great job keeping the project on track
by choosing wisely how to invest their time, but the client will still see
their work as lacking. On the vendor side, we similarly look at the
company direction, vision, personality, and more. We also consider
one thing that is frequently forgotten - the vendor's profit. So many
clients don't take the time to consider the profitability of their
development partner, but they should! Even the best software teams have to
carefully manage their resources, and will always seek to put their best
resources on the most lucrative project. So if you aren't making sure that
your project is profitable for the vendor, you might find yourself
competing with other projects for resources and attention. Another thing
to remember is the morale of the team. A perfect-fit client can be
profitable for a vendor without killing morale on the developer team,
because the team likes both the work and the client. There are always plenty
of great teams that will accept just about any client because, in most cases,
they need the money. But, this isn't a recipe for a long-lasting and
lucrative relationship. Only when there is real mutual benefit can a
relationship go long term and maintain quality. With 20 years of
experience working with great clients and the best software teams, we've
gotten pretty good putting together the 'happy marriages' that both clients
and vendors want! SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR MORE OUTSOURCING VIDEO TIPS AND NEWS!
