philip coetzee ART Menu * Home * Gallery Menu * Landscape * Big and Small * Instagram * About * Blog * Contact ABOUT Growing up in the semi-arid region of the Karoo, South Africa, I developed a love of the landscape. After completing degrees in science, I spent years lecturing in zoology, and with a research background in marine biology, the sea became a major part of my life. It is thus not surprising that I draw inspiration from the natural environment and especially the sea shore, and painting primarily landscapes and wild animals in oil. Often painting en plein air, to enjoy breathing the fresh air, sounds of nature and capture the changing light of the location. My work is influenced by a host of contemporary artists, especially the colourful paintings of Carla Bosch, Peter Pharoah, Makiwa Mutomba and Isabel le Roux. I have exhibited at the Mairangi Art Centre exhibition 2017, 2018 and The Upstairs Gallery Pop-up exhibition for Emerging Artists 2018. Mainly self-tought, I have further developed my oil painting techniques under the tutelage of the New Zealand artist Annette Dickison and more recently, Damien Kurth (Browne School of Art, Auckland).
