THE CHALLENGE

 Enforcing consistent maintenance operations across sites

Procter & Gamble operates a diverse range of equipment in global production
sites, thereby increasing the complexity of keeping manufacturing processes
consistent and compliant. “When we couldn’t connect remotely, production sites
would often take big liberties with making changes on their own. That might work
in the short term, but it’s impossible to maintain over the long term”, shared
P&G’s Electrical Platform Leader when expressing their need to establish a
uniform approach to machine access and maintenance, enforced with the same level
of rigor at all sites, at all times.   

World-leading production lines demand best-in-class maintenance processes,
especially when rolling out new products and retooling lines to match new needs.
Engineers and technicians need to be able to support operations quickly, be it
via programming adjustments or device data collection.   

What’s more, global presence invites global risks. Large industrial networks
entail upscaled maintenance complexity – which, if managed poorly, could slow
production to a crawl. In such a context, keeping OT remote access simple to
manage is a must.  

P&G needed a remote access solution to standardize processes, speed up rollouts,
and maintain top security. To achieve these goals, they turned to Secomea.  


THE SOLUTION

Besides looking for the right secure remote access tool for their manufacturing
operations, Procter & Gamble needed a solution that could be easy to install and
configure to avoid disruption in their ongoing production. Thankfully, Secomea’s
gateways are designed with compatibility in mind, so they can be implemented in
production sites at record speed and easily used without needing hours of
training.

“Secomea does a great job at handling configuration. They have preconfigured
setup files for a number of different commonly used industrial machines. We can
use a variety of industrial control systems and computers depending on the
requirements of the manufacturing equipment (…) By having everything
preconfigured, we could get up and running quickly. We did an evaluation, and it
worked out of the box”, commented P&G’s Electrical Platform Leader.

Secomea’s intuitiveness in implementation and administration is matched by its
user-friendliness for remote technicians who can select machines they need to
service from an easy-to-read drop-down menu, which is immediately accessible
upon logging into their programming terminal – Secomea’s access client. P&G’s
technicians are now only a screen away from maintenance tasks.

“To the end user, it’s no different than plugging into the device directly.
There’s no extra configuration needed on their computer or virtual machine; it’s
almost seamless” added Procter & Gamble’s Technology Director.


THE RESULT

Global control over manufacturing operations and centralized user management

Secomea enabled P&G’s Engineering & IT departments to manage user access to OT
assets in one platform.

P&G opted for a Secomea privately hosted central IAM server, ensuring higher
security against cyber threats. Rather than operating multiple access solutions
for their different machines in each site, system administrators can now use a
single central IAM server to manage access to all equipment in all manufacturing
facilities from their main office.

Thanks to the centralization of user access management, admins can now provide
or restrain remote access and ensure compliant conduct with ease. “The access
management system was a huge win. Secomea lets us selectively add remote access
users at the machine level. Being able to work with our sites centrally makes
our processes so much more successful than they could have been. It’s helped us
respond quickly, at a low cost”, commented P&G’s Technology Director.
