Greta Thunberg, the young climate activist who shot to global fame for her
climate protests as a teen, is drawing fire over her outspoken support for
Palestinians after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel — leading some to ask
whether she's antisemitic.

Other climate activists say she risks fracturing the carefully-built coalition
to take on global warming. 

In a 6,000-word cover article this week, the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel
points to the 20-year-old's recent support for Palestinians including a speech
at a massive climate rally in Amsterdam last week — and asks whether the Swede
is killing the climate movement with anti-Israel rhetoric.

Under the headline “An Idol Loses Her Way: Has Greta Thunberg Betrayed the
Climate Movement?” the magazine asks “Is Greta Thunberg antisemitic, or just
incredibly naive?"

At the Amsterdam rally, Thunberg told the crowd that as a climate justice
movement, "we have to listen to the voices of those who are being oppressed and
those who are fighting for freedom and justice."

The reference was to the Palestinians, Der Spiegel noted. In front of 85,000
people, Thunberg led the crowd in a chant of “No climate justice on occupied
lands.”



When one attendee climbed the stage to protest Thunberg's message, her
supporters wrested the microphone from him and hustled him off the stage as
Thunberg looked on and smirked, repeating “Calm down.”



German Green Party co-leader Ricarda Lang called Thunberg's appearance in
Amsterdam "completely obscene,” Der Spiegel reported. 

Thunberg last week posted a photo to X of students holding banners supporting a
“Free Palestine” alongside another reading “School Strike for the Climate,” the
slogan that first carried her to fame.

It drew thousands of critical responses, including one from a person named Ella
Kenan that read “You are the useful idiot of Jihad, all your reputation is
running down the drain”.



Volker Beck, a former German member of parliament and the president of the
German-Israeli Society, said the Amsterdam comments mark “the end of Greta
Thunberg as a climate activist," and called her “from now on, a full-time Israel
hater,” Der Spiegel reported.



Israel’s embassy in Berlin wrote on X that it was "sad how Greta Thunberg again
used the climate stage for her own purposes." 

Even Josef Schuster, the president of Germany’s main Jewish organization, the
Central Council of Jews in Germany, told Welt-TV that “there is no doubt that
she is very, very naïve. Anti-Semitism is always an extremely serious
accusation. But what I have seen – I am very close to making that accusation."

On its front-age, the left-leaning German newspaper Tageszeitung ran a photo of
Thunberg last week under the headline "Persona Non Greta,” noting the attacks on
Thunberg for her “one-sided pro-Palestinian stance on the Middle East conflict,”
and noting that German environmentalists have condemned her stance.

Spiegel, the German newsweekly, argues that “the iconic activist's actions now
threaten to divide the climate movement and the left.”

“Thunberg has changed since the summer of 2018, when she became famous. She is
no longer a girl," the magazine article says,



"And she no longer seems shy or hesitant in the spotlight."
