Bitcoin prices hover below $96,000 as the world's largest digital currency eyes
the $100,000 threshold, a milestone it failed to break last week.
 
Bitcoin has set a series of records since the Nov. 5 presidential election,
driven by expectations that the incoming Trump administration will be strongly
supportive of cryptocurrencies.
 
As of 07:00 ET (12:00 GMT), Bitcoin was up 2.2% at $95,493.0.
 
Trump to transfer cryptocurrency regulation from SEC to CFTC - Fox
 
The Trump administration wants to transfer most cryptocurrency regulatory
responsibilities from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to the
Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Fox News reported on Wednesday. The CFTC
oversees the U.S. derivatives market and its regulatory standards are considered
less stringent than those of the SEC.
 
Cryptocurrency companies in the United States have come under intense scrutiny
from the SEC over the past few years, including enforcement actions against
major crypto companies such as Consensys, Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN) and Kraken.
 
XRP, whose issuer Ripple has been embroiled in a long-running lawsuit with the
SEC, initially rose more than 7% following the news.
 
Trump Considers Nominating Pro-Crypto SEC Chairman Candidate
Veteran financial regulator Paul Atkins is one of the top candidates to succeed
Gary Gensler, who will serve as SEC Chairman starting in January, Bloomberg
reported on Wednesday.
 
Atkins, who was interviewed by the Trump team, is reportedly a supporter of
digital assets and is expected to take a friendlier regulatory approach than
Gensler.
 
Gensler, who has said he will resign after Trump takes office next year, has
been criticized by cryptocurrency supporters for regulating the industry through
enforcement.
As Trump picks pro-crypto candidates for Treasury and Commerce secretaries,
there are also reports that Atkins is considering a run as SEC chairman.
 
Trump's Bitcoin Strategic Reserve Has Limited Prospects - Compass Point
Despite optimism about the new administration's cryptocurrency plans, analysts
at Compass Point said in a client note on Wednesday that Trump's proposed
Bitcoin strategic reserve plan is limited in scope.
 
The Treasury Department is unlikely to approve more deficit-driven funds for the
government to buy Bitcoin, and the Republican-majority Congress is unwilling to
increase the U.S. fiscal deficit to buy cryptocurrencies, the report said.
 
Compass Point also called Senator Cynthia Lummis's proposed Bitcoin bill
"unworkable."
 
Cryptocurrency Prices Today: Altcoins Mixed
Cryptocurrency prices were mixed on Thursday. Ethereum, the world's
second-largest cryptocurrency, rose 4.8% to $3,631.56.
 
Solana rose 0.7%, Cardano fell 0.8%, and Polygon rose 0.6%. Among meme tokens,
Dogecoin rose 3%.
