Francis is a Senior Benefits Consultant at Business Benefits Group (BBG). Francis started in the insurance industry over a decade ago, and has been in his current role for close to six years. Francis credits his Filipino heritage with helping him succeed as a broker. "Filipinos don't waste anything, and that was something that was ingrained into my day-to-day life growing up," he said. "Whether it be someone not finishing all of the food on their plate, to not repurposing a shortbread cookie tin into a sewing kit container, helping clients to 'not waste' is something that I think has helped me to succeed in my career, from reducing time by providing technology to streamline automate processes, to reducing costs by providing alternative funding models for clients to finance their medical programs." Q: What advice would you give to up-and-coming health insurance brokers? A: Do your homework. Become a nerd. When I started in this industry, I became a nerd and studied everything I could. There's so much to learn, and it's an ever-evolving landscape you need to stay on top of. I've made it another initiative of mine to post on LinkedIn at least once a day, Monday through Friday, on just a relevant topic. And I found it helps to not only put my name out there, but also helps me to kind of stay aware of any new changes, whether it's a trend in terms of what Gen Zers want, or if it's something that I should be aware of from a compliance standpoint that I think the general public should also be aware of. Q: How do you ensure that your clients' employees are satisfied with their benefits? A: What I found really helps are benefit surveys. Benefit surveys I don't say are optional—I say they're almost essential at this point. I've found a lot of companies are at first resistant to putting them out. They say, "Well, Francis, what if we ask them all these questions about what they would like, what they're satisfied with, what they're not satisfied with, and we're not able to deliver?" "Well," I say, "at least it's giving that employee the peace of mind that, 'Hey, XYZ company actually cares about the benefits that they're offering. They're not just giving us a stack of benefits and saying take it or leave it. They're wanting our feedback as far as which benefits would be ideal.'" At the end of the day, your benefits are not only a recruitment tool, but they're also a retention tool.
