View gallery Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's helicopter destroyer DDH183 Izumo, the largest surface combatant of the Japanese navy, is seen before its launching ceremony in Yokohama, south of Tokyo August 6, 2013. REUTERS/Toru Hanai (JAPAN - Tags: MILITARY POLITICS) Eric Talmadge, Associated Press 22 hours ago PoliticsMilitaryJapanChina YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) -- Japan on Tuesday unveiled its biggest warship since World War II, a huge flat-top destroyer that has raised eyebrows in China and elsewhere because it bears a strong resemblance to a conventional aircraft carrier. The ship, which has a flight deck that is nearly 250 meters (820 feet) long, is designed to carry up to 14 helicopters. Japanese officials say it will be used in national defense — particularly in anti-submarine warfare and border-area surveillance missions — and to bolster the nation's ability to transport personnel and supplies in response to large-scale natural disasters, like the devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Though the ship — dubbed "Izumo" — has been in the works since 2009, its unveiling comes as Japan and China are locked in a dispute over several small islands located between southern Japan and Taiwan. For months, ships from both countries have been conducting patrols around the isles, called the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyutai in China. The tensions over the islands, along with China's heavy spending on defense and military modernization, have heightened calls in Japan for beefed-up naval and air forces. China recently began operating an aircraft carrier that it refurbished after purchasing from Russia, and is reportedly moving forward with the construction of another that is domestically built. Japan, China and Taiwan all claim the islands. Though technically a destroyer, some experts believe the new Japanese ship could potentially be used in the future to launch fighter jets or other aircraft that have the ability to take off vertically. That would be a departure for Japan, which has one of the best equipped and best trained naval forces in the Pacific but which has not sought to build aircraft carriers of its own because of constitutional restrictions that limit its military forces to a defensive role. Japan says it has no plans to use the ship in that manner. The Izumo does not have catapults for launching fighters, nor does it have a "ski-jump" ramp on its flight deck for fixed-wing aircraft launches. Nagging is an interaction to which each party contributes. Nagging, in communication, is a repetitious behaviour in the form of pestering, hectoring or otherwise continuously urging an individual to complete previously discussed requests or act on advice. A common factor and by far the most universal cause that triggers nagging is said to be the unhealthy habits of a spouse. According to marriage counsellors, nagging is prompted when a partner feels that his or her valid claims, said or unsaid, have not been responded to adequately. When the honeymoon lights fade, they are replaced by sunlight; when the candlelight flickers, the fluorescent bulbs are switched on, and the glare reveals the not-so-perfect imperfections of one's partner. Nagging begins in an effort to perfect one's partner. Primarily in the mind, but slowly it finds a voice. Nagging is experienced in every household where one partner tries to dominate the other subconsciously, or while trying to get a point across. Nagging by spouses is a frequent marital complaint. According to psychotherapists, individuals who nag are often "weak, insecure, and fearful. Their nagging disguises a basic feeling of weakness and provides an illusion of power and superiority". Nagging can be found between both male and female spouses, though usually over different subjects, according to psychologists, husbands' nagging usually involve finding "fault with their dinner, with the household bills and with the children", along with "carrying home the worries of their work'. A marriage counsellor, Mr Kweku Tsen, finds it difficult to understand when people attribute nagging to women. According to him, men and women nag but the degree was what made the difference. To him, nagging had become an issue in marriages because 'men have not appreciated the psychology of women and vice versa'. 'Every human being is a contrasting character and we do not appreciate each other's psychology' so, according to him, until the awareness was created before people marry, the issue of one person nagging the other would always come up. He has, therefore, called on parents to train their children during their teenage years to understand and also appreciate the opposite séx and added that this would help them manage the issue of nagging better in their relationships in the future. Mabel, a working mother says, "women take on the lion's share of nagging". She said because many women found it difficult to directly communicate their needs, they fell into the fatal trap of whining and nagging about what they were not getting rather than directly stating what they wanted, needed, or expected from their partners. Unfortunately, she says, whining and nagging do not put a man into a giving mood, thus, a vicious cycle is born. Although she was quick to add that men also nag, to her the more a woman nagged, the less likely the man would be responsive to her wishes. To Mabel, nagging kills relationships, 'it puts your man off', making it difficult for easy communication to take place. Nagging is sometimes unproductive; psychologically, nagging can act to reinforce behaviour as a study by the University of Florida found. The main factors that led a person to nag were differences in "gender, social distance, and social status and power", the study stated. Continuous nagging, according to relationship experts, makes one spouse resentful and defensive and remove him or herself from the one nagging, physically and emotionally. To experts, nagging is detrimental to relationships, as it distances one from the other. Nagging, according to marriage experts, promotes negative and destructive emotions such as disapproval, condemnation, censure, anger, irritation, physical and emotional agitation in both partners. You'd know if the guy you were lusting over you, and you'd have the opportunity to avoid so many of the minefields that dating throws in your path. Unfortunately, we don't always have the straightforward relationships we'd like, but that doesn't mean that clues aren't available for us to decipher. With the right information, you can decode his signals and make an educated guess about his interest level. Step 1 Watch his body language. According to a July 2009 "Marie Claire" magazine article entitled "Four Flirting Fun Facts--With Research to Back Them Up!" by Maura Kelly, men may show their interest by telltale body language cues. For instance, he may repeatedly catch your eye from across the room. Or, even if he's talking with someone else, he may angle his feet in your direction. Both men and women also tend to "peacock" around the people they're interested in, so a man might stretch to expand his chest or put his hands in his front pockets to draw your eyes toward his groin. Step 2 Note if he tries to touch you. In the "Marie Claire" article "10 Signs He Is Interested in You" by Matt Titus, if a man digs you, he's more likely to touch you casually and lean in toward your personal space. He's also more likely to mimic your movements. So, lean in toward him and see if he responds similarly. Notice if he brushes your arm or touches your back to help you though a crowd. An interested man will want to get physical. Step 3 Gauge his interest level. According to the Social Issues Research Centre website, if he regularly asks about you or the things you're interested in, if he knows your hangouts or favorite restaurants or if he seems to "coincidentally" show up at a party you mentioned to him off-hand, then chances are he's looking for something more. I realized what makes me a lady from my research, so I thought I should give the platform to other people to identify themselves as ladies too. Why don't you use the following points to compare your lady-like status? 1. Femininity is the number one thing that makes a lady. The fact that you are a female, and all other things that come together to form the female body is found on you and makes you a lady. So don't underestimate your body because it makes you the unique lady you are. 2.Classiness is the next thing. Being elegant in all aspect of your life makes you a lady. For instance, your way of dressing, walking, talking, etc, are what makes you lady the lady we see. 3. Having self confidence and the boldness to do things also makes one a lady. In my opinion facing realities boldly and confidently, makes one the lady I talk about. 4. Having a good personal hygiene behavior is another thing that makes a lady who she is. With all the above mentioned attributes, without a good personal hygiene, like well kept hair, nails, good breath, clean teeth, neat house etc, one cannot be a complete lady. 5. The last and not the least, a lady should be submissive and of substance. In all ways, a lady must be submissive not to only a man but to her fellow ladies and even to children. That brings to light the quality that shows that one is a complete lady. Ladies, these are my views and I know you also have yours to share. The Stop Phubbing campaign group certainly does Beta * Share 644 * * * inShare4 * Email Don't look now: are you guilty of phubbing? Photograph: Jennifer Byron/Getty Images Age: A distinctly 21st-century problem. Appearance: A friend's face buried in a screen. What are we talking about? We're talking about phubbing. Never heard of it. That's because the word was first used about a month ago. To describe what? To describe the kind of person who bursts out laughing mid-conversation, making you think you've made a brilliant joke, and then says: "Sorry, I wasn't laughing at you, I just saw something really funny on Twitter." Or the sort who think it's appropriate to check their emails in the pub when you only have each other for company. Or the tedious people who live-tweet weddings. Those people are the worst. So what does "phubbing" actually mean? It means "The act of snubbing someone in a social setting by looking at your phone instead of paying attention." According to whom? According to the website of the international Stop Phubbing campaign group. There's a campaign against it? There is. Or a website for a campaign anyway, set up last month by 23-year-old Alex Haigh from Melbourne. They haven't actually done all that much campaigning so far. How can I get involved? You can download "Stop Phubbing" posters for restaurants and "Stop Phubbing" place cards for weddings, browse a gallery of celebrity "phubbers" caught texting instead of talking – including Victoria Beckham and Elton John – and even "Shame a Phubber" from your own social circle by uploading an incriminating photograph to the site. Sounds pretty serious. Not really. There's also a list of "Disturbing Phubbing Stats" that includes "If phubbing were a plague it would decimate six Chinas", "97% of people claim their food tasted worse while being a victim of phubbing" and "92% of repeat phubbers go on to become politicians". Ah. So it's really just a joke site? Well, a joke site with a serious message about our growing estrangement from our fellow human beings. But mostly a joke site, yes. Do say: "Don't you hate it when people don't pay attention?" Don't say: "Sorry, I didn't hear that, I just found this really funny website about phubbing." So good luck to his fellow astronauts on the International Space Station Beta * Share 10 * * * inShare0 * Email Kirobo the talking robot … in space, no one can hear you scream. Photograph: Toru Hanai This August, a consortium of Japanese scientists, engineers and advertising bigwigs will send a talking robot into space. The robot will be named Kirobo, and its mission will be to communicate directly with astronauts onboard the International Space Station. The moral of this, clearly, is that Japanese consortiums need to watch more films. Rule No1 of almost every science-fiction film ever made is that you should never put a talking robot in space. Never. 2001: A Space Odyssey put a talking robot in space, and it ended up trying to kill everyone. Alien put a talking robot in space, and it ended up freaking out and puking milk everywhere. Star Wars put a talking robot in space, and it just stood around talking to a dustbin all day. Putting a talking robot in space is a very bad idea, especially if – as is the case with Kirobo – the robot looks like a sinister little Chucky doll. Link to video: Japanese robot astronaut floats in zero gravity But, as overwhelmingly creepy as Kirobo obviously is, at least his existence represents progress. If this had happened 15 years ago, the astronauts onboard would have been sent a Tamagotchi for company, and then they would have had to live with the inevitable guilt of killing it after forgetting to pat it on the head every 15 minutes. Ten years ago, they would have been sent a Sony AIBO robot dog, which would have just wandered around being all expensive and useless. And at least this was a Japanese idea. God knows what Britain would have sent up. A Mr Potato Head, probably. Now, though, the residents of the ISS will have Kirobo for company, a robot that can learn through its communication with humans, possibly ushering in a new golden age of human-robot interaction. We're already becoming increasingly reliant on robots in warfare and as the global population ages it is expected that robots will play a bigger and bigger part in healthcare, from robot pets that aid dementia patients to full-on robot nurses. Using robots for communication and companionship might easily be the next step. If the Kirobo experiment turns out to be a success, we might be closer than ever to seeing a real-life Johnny 5, or a robot police officer as seen in Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E. from Friends (a thought further explored in JJ Abrams' upcoming sci-fi show, Almost Human, which partners a human cop (Karl Urban) with a life-like android with feelings (Michael Ealy). At the very least, we're all surely destined to have Rocky IV-style robot butlers before too long. So maybe, on reflection, Kirobo is a good thing. Sure, he might go haywire, invent Skynet and doom humanity to an eternity of miserable slavery, but at least he'll be doing it 200 miles or so above the Earth. To the astronauts who will have to spend the next few months alone in a claustrophobic tin with Kirobo, and Kirobo's unblinking eyes, and Kirobo's grasping little hands, and Kirobo's creepy little red lips, thanks for taking this one for the team.
