WHAT IS THIS RESEARCH ABOUT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

American Indians and Alaska Natives have a higher rate of long-term diseases,
such as cancer and diabetes, than most other races/ethnicities. Many of these
diseases can be prevented, managed, or treated with the help of specialists
(doctors who focus on a specific area of medicine). However, many American
Indians and Alaska Natives do not receive specialty care. The purpose of this
study is to learn more about why.

Specifically, this research is looking to better understand the experiences of
American Indians and Alaska Natives with first-time referrals to oncologists,
neurologists, and/or ophthalmologists.
