OCEAN RIDGE QUILTERS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2019 AUGUST 2019 MINUTES August 9, 2019 Ocean Ridge Quilters Meeting Minutes MAUR WINE·TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2019· Maggy called the meeting to order at 9:35. Maggy then introduced Irene McNamara who is overseeing having her home built in OR. She has done Charity sewing in NJ. Also, Louise Wagner also from NJ, a new member is in her OR home now. She has already completed a “sister block“ for October. Maggy then presented the FACILITATOR REPORT: all 26 Sister Blocks are taken and many finished. BarbaraH will be donating the batting, the backing and her time for the quilting. It was requested by BarbM that she would like to make a block also and Maggy will request more blocks from our Oak Island sisters - stay tuned for details if you would like to participate. Charity Day at Belk will be August 24, Maggy has $5.00 coupons to purchase for major discounts - monies to go to Ocean Ridge Charities in Brunswick County. FINANCIALS: Janet presented her treasurer report. Our total to date is: $698.55. Education: $423.07, Charity: $111.58, Supplies: $33.37 Sunshine: $130.51. It was decided that new members who joined after June 30, would only need to pay $10 to join. If you want a copy of the latest report, please see Janet. Janet has also sent out the latest OR Quilters member list. CHARITY: Kisses were received by Sandy and Judy when they delivered ALL the place mats to Meals on Wheels, Brunswick County. The placemat donation will be featured in the Senior Buzz and other publications. Charity also reported that the Race Quilting was a success and many quilts will be donated in the future by participants and by quilters who did not take part in the race but did them on their own. EDUCATION: KathyS confirmed that JoannS will be here for the September meeting. She will present her Trunk Show in the morning and teach her Modern Dresden Plate pillow class in the afternoon. 17 Rulers have been ordered. If you want more info, see Kathy. Kathy will be providing Facebook and Blog access to new members. Back-to-School : Kathy has been shopping at Walmart and pulled from her ‘bookbag’ numerous school supplies that can be used for Quilting: Notebook=$.25, binders, Kids Tracing Paper and Newsprint, Glue Sticks, Scissors, Sharpie markers, pencils, Dry Erase markers for plastic sheets, plastic storage boxes, Slider zipper bags 40 for $1. STOCK UP! SPECIAL PROJECTS: BarbaraH reported that at the August First Friday there was discussion on the Log Cabin Project and Tula Pink Project. Barbara communicated that First Friday will continue to focus on LogCabin/Tula but also will discuss, any questions, provide extra help, and suggestions - many experts with helping ideas attended. She looks forward to continuing this venue with everyone on First Fridays. There should be time available on First Fridays and The Third Friday to possibly work on Anne Hash’s Christmas Quilt Pattern. TRAVEL: PatH reported that the OR Quilters overnight Shop Hop to Tennessee and NC will be September 10-12. Five people have signed up so far, please see Pat if you would like to attend. RETREAT: Phyl has 12 Quilters confirmed , 2 pending for The Retreat the week of March 7-14 in Emerald Isle - beautiful house on the beach with elevator, under $500p/p. Still may be room, if you are interested, contact Phyl. PUBLICITY: Diane noted that an article accompanied by pictures of the Placemats and Quilters have been submitted to The Beacon and Star News and will be submitted to OR Changing Tides for October. She also mentioned that certain publications request pictures with specific pixels for publication. SHOW N TELL: A plethora of quilts were shown - quite amazing ladies ! DebbieK - weighted blanket for her grandson BarbaraH - Happy Quilt, paper pieced, outstanding Tula Pink Quilt, Golden Days, Jen Kingwell Janet - Twisted Pinwheel from 5” charm pack and special small ruler purchase on Shop Hop. Our youngest Quilter, Caroline, showed off her quilt designing with proud G’ma PatH. Louise - quilt for grandson Charity Quilt - pieced by PatH and Quilted by CathyS Phyl - not your grandmothers Log Cabin, Colorado Sunsets KathyS - David‘s flannel Christmas Quilt AnnH -Camper pillow top REMINDERS: Hope Harbor Charities Raffle and Action on Wednesday 8/14-15, many project by OR Quilters will be raffled Quilts of Valor - September 21 @2:00 at the PC club - quilts were shown - pieced by many and 16 alone quilted by KathyS. Very special Thanks were given to CathyS for all her work to this special Project. CLASS: Cathy Story then began class on her Iron Caddy - thanks again CathyS For teaching this. They have about 60 members the meeting will be at the Oak Island Recreation Center. Lunch will be provided. There will be a challenge ( information to follow.) Kathy Stuart will provide an instructional presentation. Financial Report by Janet Getz Our current balance is $807.99. If you would like a copy of the report mailed to you each month, please get in touch with Janet. Maggy mentioned that she has all of the supplies used in the Amazing Race for anyone to use. Janet will send out a request for member telephone numbers to add to our member list. Charity Report by Sandy Shanahan 132 placemats have been finished. Sandy asked that you quilt the placemats before giving them to her. A duck quilt was shown by Sandy, that was donated to our group. It was quilted by Barbara McMurtry. Sandy suggested donating it to the Hope Harbor raffle. There are quilt tops that have been donated. Please get in touch with Sandy if you can help with the quilting. July 12th is the Jelly Roll Race. A sign up sheet was passed around if you would like to donate your quilt. She also has cut strips available and backing if you would like to donate the quilt. It should be a fun day. Education by Kathy Stuart Upcoming classes on meeting days: Aug. Kathy Storey will show how to make iron caddies for small and large irons. Sept. Joanne Shropshire will be teaching Modern Dresden Plate pillow. There will be a lecture in the morning and class in the afternoon. Kathy then gave us information on jelly rolls and making jelly roll quilts. Cathy Storey displayed one she had made. Instructions will be posted. Projects by Barbara Hutton. Log cabin quilts of various designs and Tula Pink blocks are being worked on. By Popular Demand Anne Hash will teach a class to make a Christmas Tree Quilt. A sign up sheet was passed around and the date is to be decided. Sandy mentioned it could be a possible quilt for our next raffle. Financial Report by Janet Getz. There were 2 expenditures this month. One for new printer and one for the Judy Lily demonstration and class. The balance is $853. If you would like a copy of the report please email Janet. She sends the report out before each meeting. Travel Opportunities by Pat Huie. Pat presented 3 trips and has mailed out an email to all members with the information. Contact Pat if you are interested. At the June 7th meeting Barbara Hutton will demonstrate paper piecing. You will need to bring your machine or share machine with someone. Let Pat know if you plan on bringing your machine and learning paper piecing. Correspondence by Maureen Lundgren A thank you note was sent for donation of fabric. Charity by Sandy Shanahan Over 100 placemats have been made by members. The goal is 150. Show and Tell Maureen Lundgren made 5 placemats and finished a wall hanging using the fabric she made in our hand painted fabric class. Janet Getz showed us a tote she made from the hand painted fabric. Ann Hash used a photo transferred to fabric to make a pillow for her friend whose dog had died. Also, a beautiful Quilt of Valor. She made the pattern. Meeting was followed Judy Lilly demonstration of landscape quilting and her class By the Sea.
