More than 1,200 people have been rescued from Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre as
dozens of firefighters managed to extinguish a fire that ripped through one of
the city’s busiest buildings and left more than a dozen injured. Police at the
scene told reporters that everyone at the 39-story structure in Causeway Bay has
been brought to safety by 5pm (09:00 GMT), after more than 300 were trapped
earlier on the rooftop of the building, which houses both offices and a shopping
centre. Al Jazeera’s Britt Clennett reports from Hong Kong. - Follow us on

Things took a turn for the worse in Hong Kong this weekend. Police took
unprecedented action on protestors, using water cannons to disperse crowds and
later shooting their first live round since protests began 11 weeks ago. Scenes
of conflict between protestors and police are becoming increasingly common. And
now, some youngsters believe that fighting back with force is the only way to
get the government's attention. “For us, if we don't use radical ways to fight
against the government, [then] the government will still see us as nothing,”
says 20 year-old Jen, who asked to use a pseudonym due to the heightened
security risk. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

A massive blaze at Hong Kong's World Trade Centre has been extinguished after
about four hours. It trapped about 150 people on the roof of the skyscraper.
More than a dozen people were injured. The shopping centre, including the
basement carpark, had been undergoing renovations for months. The lower floors
of the building -- up to the fifth floor -- are covered in scaffolding. Police
said preliminary investigations reveal that the fire broke out inside a meter
room on the first floor of the building. The blaze then spread to scaffolding on
the exterior of the building. Subscribe to our channel here:

FIRE

Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of
combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products. Slower
oxidative processes like rusting or digestion are not included by this
definition.

Fire is hot because conversion of the weak double bond in molecular oxygen, O2,
to the stronger bonds in the combustion products carbon dioxide and water
releases energy (418 kJ per 32 g of O2); the bond energies of the fuel play only
a minor role here. At a certain point in the combustion reaction, called the
ignition point, flames are produced. The flame is the visible portion of the
fire. Flames consist primarily of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and
nitrogen. If hot enough, the gases may become ionized to produce plasma.
Depending on the substances alight, and any impurities outside, the color of the
flame and the fire's intensity will be different.

Fire in its most common form can result in conflagration, which has the
potential to cause physical damage through burning. Fire is an important process
that affects ecological systems around the globe. The positive effects of fire
include stimulating growth and maintaining various ecological systems. Fire has
been used by humans for cooking, generating heat, light, signaling, and
propulsion purposes. The negative effects of fire include hazard to life and
property, atmospheric pollution, and water contamination. If fire removes
protective vegetation, heavy rainfall may lead to an increase in soil erosion by
water. Also, when vegetation is burned, the nitrogen it contains is released
into the atmosphere, unlike elements such as potassium and phosphorus which
remain in the ash and are quickly recycled into the soil. This loss of nitrogen
caused by a fire produces a long-term reduction in the fertility of the soil,
which only slowly recovers as nitrogen is "fixed" from the atmosphere by
lightning and by leguminous plants such as clover.

FIRE!!

Fire!! was an African-American literary magazine published in New York City in
1926 during the Harlem Renaissance. The publication was started by Wallace
Thurman, Zora Neale Hurston, Aaron Douglas, John P. Davis, Richard Bruce Nugent,
Gwendolyn Bennett, Lewis Grandison Alexander, Countee Cullen, and Langston
Hughes. After it published one issue, its quarters burned down, and the magazine
ended.

HISTORY

Fire!! was conceived to express the African-American experience during the
Harlem Renaissance in a modern and realistic fashion, using literature as a
vehicle of enlightenment. The magazine's founders wanted to express the changing
attitudes of younger African Americans. In Fire!! they explored edgy issues in
the Black community, such as homosexuality, bisexuality, interracial
relationships, promiscuity, prostitution, and color prejudice.

Langston Hughes wrote that the name was intended to symbolize their goal "to
burn up a lot of the old, dead conventional Negro-white ideas of the past ...
into a realization of the existence of the younger Negro writers and artists,
and provide us with an outlet for publication not available in the limited pages
of the small Negro magazines then existing.". The magazine's headquarters burned
to the ground shortly after it published its first issue. It ended operations.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the
southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong
Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of
1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland
China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong
is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.

After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the
perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and
a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under
British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan
occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of
Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the
United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint
Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30
June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a
high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two
systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have
contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

Things took a turn for the worse in Hong Kong this weekend. Police took
unprecedented action on protestors, using water cannons to disperse crowds and
later shooting their first live round since protests began 11 weeks ago. Scenes
of conflict between protestors and police are becoming increasingly common. And

Police deployed water cannon against protesters in Hong Kong on Sunday, in
some cases using blue-dyed water laced with pepper spray. Teargas was also
fired in an attempt to drive people away from the streets outside

campuses last week have largely retreated, but hardliners have
fortified themselves inside the campus and are refusing to leave

More than 1,200 people have been rescued from Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre
as dozens of firefighters managed to extinguish a fire that ripped through
one of the city’s busiest buildings and left more than a dozen injured.
Police at the scene told reporters that everyone at the 39-story structure
in Causeway Bay has been brought to safety by 5pm (09:00 GMT), after more than
300 were trapped earlier on the rooftop of the building, which houses both
offices and a shopping centre. Al Jazeera’s Britt Clennett reports from

Captured here is the bustling Wan Chai area of Hong Kong Island, which is home
to the Hong Kong Fire Services Department's (HKFSD) Wan Chai Fire Station.
This station is one of the oldest and busiest in the whole territory and
is therefore rarely open to visitors. While I was filming responses here
the firefighters noticed and waved me over to invite me inside the
station! I hope you enjoy this exclusive look inside Wan Chai Fire Station.

Things took a turn for the worse in Hong Kong this weekend. Police took
unprecedented action on protestors, using water cannons to disperse crowds
and later shooting their first live round since protests began 11 weeks ago.
Scenes of conflict between protestors and police are becoming
increasingly common. And now, some youngsters believe that fighting back
with force is the only way to get the government's attention. “For us, if we
don't use radical ways to fight against the government, [then] the
government will still see us as nothing,” says 20 year-old Jen, who asked to
use a pseudonym due to the heightened security risk. Subscribe to VICE News

A massive blaze at Hong Kong's World Trade Centre has been extinguished
after about four hours. It trapped about 150 people on the roof of the
skyscraper. More than a dozen people were injured. The shopping centre,
including the basement carpark, had been undergoing renovations for
months. The lower floors of the building -- up to the fifth floor -- are
covered in scaffolding. Police said preliminary investigations
reveal that the fire broke out inside a meter room on the first floor of the
building. The blaze then spread to scaffolding on the exterior of the
building. Subscribe to our channel here: https:// cna. asia/ youtubesub
