JFS RENAMES AGENCY JOAN AND STANFORD ALEXANDER JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE

Published•
Thu, Jan 26, 2023

At a heartwarming gathering for its 110th annual meeting, Jewish Family Service
Houston was officially renamed Joan and Stanford Alexander Jewish Family
Service, in honor of a couple whose leadership and impact have been instrumental
in transforming JFS into a premier social service agency.

Founded in 1913, Alexander JFS serves people of all faiths and backgrounds and
touches the lives of more than 20,000 each year. The mission of the agency is to
transform lives by empowering individuals, families and communities – driven by
compassion, leading through innovation, guided by Jewish values.

The agency offers a wide array of social services, including mental health
services, disability services, a Career and Employment Center, Jewish Chaplaincy
Services, as well as case management for disaster relief, seniors, financial
stability and for people living with disabilities.

In addition to direct services, Alexander JFS has developed innovative advocacy
programs for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities, expertise in
disaster management and new models for suicide and substance-misuse prevention.
These programs have been nationally recognized and shared as models for best
practices to peers locally and across the country.

Carl E. Josehart, CEO, began the annual meeting with the announcement of the new
name and credited much of the agency’s recent growth and development to the
Alexanders’ leadership, vision and generosity.

Hearing the announcement, the crowd rose for a standing ovation, recognizing the
remarkable impact the Alexanders have had on meeting the emerging needs of the
community.

“In every generation, leaders step up and become synonymous with creating a
caring community,” said Josehart. “In the past two decades, it was Joan and
Stanford Alexander.

Josehart described the underlying spirit that inspired the Alexanders’ longtime
involvement with the agency.

“A beautiful statement in the Talmud says: ‘The whole value of a benevolent deed
lies in the love that inspires it.’ Everything Joan and Stanford did for JFS was
infused with a love for their community.”

The Alexanders’ special relationship with JFS began in 2007 when they went to
Lee Wunsch, then CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, and told him
of their dream to create an oasis of care.

Wunsch arranged a meeting with Linda L. Burger, former JFS CEO. At the meeting,
the Alexanders, Burger and Wunsch exchanged existing plans and ideas for the
future – and did so in a style that both encouraged and challenged others to
join with them so that JFS would not only survive but grow and thrive.

Reflecting on that meeting, Joan recalled saying, “Stanford and I knew
immediately our collaboration with JFS and Linda was bashert – no egos, always
on the same page. I believe there are no coincidences in life, only miracles in
which G-d chooses to be anonymous.”

While she was CEO, Burger began discussions with Joan and Stanford about the
agency’s desire to show their gratitude for their impactful leadership, support
and foresight by renaming the agency.

Burger said, “Their imprint is on everything, from our beloved Celebration
Company and extensive Disability Services, to our high-quality Behavioral and
Mental Health programs, which includes the development of advanced health care
technology to support our work, to the coveted Joan Alexander Chesed Award.
Adding their name to the agency is a match made in Heaven.”

“It is such an honor to have our family’s name become a permanent part of JFS,”
said Joan. “I know Stanford would be so pleased and proud.”

The meeting continued by recognizing the remarkable accomplishments of six
Celebration Company employees. Others recognized included staff members who were
instrumental in the growth of the agency; more than 400 volunteers who provided
many hours of community service; and the leadership of members of the board of
directors for both the agency and its supporting foundation, the Houston Jewish
Family Foundation.

Josehart explained that this new name makes “something old new again,” and the
agency is energized by several emerging initiatives.

“Joan and Stanford’s leadership and the support of so many others in the
community helped develop the solid foundation which now allows JFS to maintain
the vital services our community has come to rely on, as well as the ability to
seek new partners to meet the ever-growing and evolving needs of the communities
that we serve,” said Josehart.

“With our new name, which will also sometimes be referred to as Alexander JFS,
we are proud to be starting a new partnership with Houston Hillel to bring
counseling to undergraduate and graduate students; to be entering a new
partnership with Noah’s House that will allow us to add a residential option for
individuals with disabilities; and we are absolutely thrilled to announce the
expansion of Celebration Company with a second location on the west side of
Houston.

“We have so many exciting plans for the future, and we welcome you to join us
for the journey.”

The meeting ended with a special tribute to the legacy of Gloria Ribnick, of
blessed memory; and the entire evening was a symphony of gratitude, celebration,
inclusion, memories and hope for a bright future.

Over the coming few weeks, the website and agency materials will be changed to
reflect the new name and logo.
