WHAT'S IN CITY PRESS: ‘ZUMA, SON TRYING TO GAIN SYMPATHY’; THE COVID-19 STORM IS
COMING

‘Zuma and son trying to gain sympathy’

The new tell-all YouTube channel launched this week by former president Jacob
Zuma and his son Duduzane has been described as a “mere smokescreen and public
relations diversion meant to gain public sympathy given the looming arms deal
corruption trial set to be faced by the former president in June”.

The covid-19 storm is coming

South Africa is only expected to reach the peak of the Covid-19 coronavirus in
August or September, but the Actuarial Society of SA (Assa) has warned that as
many as 48 000 people could die if the country fails to flatten the curve.
Public health specialists have also suggested that now may be the time to move
from surveillance of the disease and active case-finding to focusing on hotspot
areas, which would mean intervening in the clusters where the disease is
problematic.

Sisulu’s week of hell

Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has retreated
from key ministerial decisions this week, the latest concerning the Sedibeng
Water board in the Free State. Just last week, Sedibeng Water board members lost
their jobs after Sisulu wrote to them to say their term had come to a premature
end. But Sisulu did an about-turn this week, telling City Press that it had been
a mistake to serve the dismissal letters in the middle of a national state of
disaster.

Not enough food for everyone

The process of distributing food parcels in the Eastern Cape has been marred by
allegations of corruption, while thousands wait for food relief in the face of
privations cause by the Covid-19 coronavirus lockdown.

Top varsity officials in graft probe

A forensic investigation into allegations of corruption in the awarding of
tenders has set the cat among the pigeons at the embattled Mangosuthu University
of Technology (MUT) in Durban.

Getting food to the needy is not easy

Access to food parcels for KwaZulu-Natal’s most vulnerable citizens depends on
where they live, who they know and how effective local community structures are
in any given area.

Covid-19 forces clinic’s hand

While the Gauteng government continues with its blitz to prepare for the spike
in Covid-19 coronavirus cases, especially as winter approaches – by increasing
its bed and ward capacity – staff at a small clinic have been left reeling.

Legal action to unban tobacco continues

The Fair-trade Independent Tobacco Association (Fita) is happy with the
concession by government to allow its members to manufacture and export tobacco
products after it went to court over the ban of tobacco sales in South Africa
during the lockdown to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

No kissing on set, please

Actors happy to be allowed to go back to work, despite having to wear masks,
sanitise everything and always keep their distance from each other.

Long hours, short tempers in queues

Following a challenging, yet necessary, five-week national lockdown, which
included severely restricted movement, consumers and business owners were
thrilled at the slight easing of the regulations and the prospect of shopping
again. But the experience has been far from pleasant, writes Palesa Dlamini

Soweto residents go hungry

Some Soweto residents say they have lost hope that they will receive food
parcels after being on the social development waiting list for more than a
month. "Times are really tough. We are living from hand to mouth and some nights
we go to bed with empty stomachs."

Jessica gets ready for the Queen

Jessica Nkosi has decided to follow her dream and broaden her horizons as an
actress. But her tough decision means she is leaving Isibaya after six years on
the show’s set. “It was really hard to leave Qondi, but it has always been my
dream to explore other characters. I don’t like to be typecast – and this is how
we evolve as actors.”

IMF was our best hope, NEC told

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Covid-19 coronavirus
facility is probably the cheapest that Treasury could get, the ANC national
executive committee (NEC) meeting heard at the weekend.

Covid-19 sparks Cape border war

The movement of thousands of people between the Western Cape and the Eastern
Cape during the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak has strained relations between the
two provinces, and the ANC in the Eastern Cape is threatening to take the DA-run
Western Cape government to court.

Sars boss accused of bowing to big tobacco

The SA Revenue Service (Sars) has been accused by some industry stakeholders of
bowing to pressure from the tobacco industry and shelving a report recommending
a “track and trace” process, which could be a major boost to revenue collection
and curbing the illicit trade in cigarettes.

Baby Bean brings in the jackpot

This month is extra special for actress Linda Mtoba. She will be celebrating her
first Mother’s Day today and her third anniversary with her husband, Steven
Meyer. To add a cherry on to the top of the cake, Mtoba was officially announced
as the new brand ambassador for Huggies SA this week.

Unisa students unhappy with online exams

Unisa’s decision to conduct open-book digital examinations as part of this
semester’s assessments has sparked outrage among some students. City Press
understands that the decision has not been welcomed by several students, who
raised several issues. These include the possibility of the high volume of exam
scripts clogging the system, and poorer students complained about a lack of data
to download exam papers and then upload their answers. Other students were
worried about their “online typing skills”.
