And God is gentle to His servants. O you who believe! Enter the fold of peace, all of you. Do not follow in the footsteps of Satan, for he is to you a manifest enemy." Self-surrender is the most basic concept of faith, it is the condition of placing total trust in the certainty of the existence of God and recognising that one is the creation of a Merciful and Compassionate Creator. The consequence of such consciousness is giving one's self over completely to doing what God has commended, trying to live in this world to earn one's place in Paradise in the Hereafter. The 'fold of peace' is then a state of personal certainty and acceptance, a coming to terms with one's true nature. It is also recognition of the real nature and purpose of the world in which we exist. It is the state of being that one should strive to achieve, a state of being in stark contrast to the arrogant, worldly, domineering and destructive populism; dedicated commitment to working peacefully being the best way to make a better world based on justice, equity and dignity for all. Surrendering oneself to God, entering the fold of peace, is no guarantee. It does not make people perfect. Self-surrender is the starting point, the point from which one sets off in search of the straight path, seeking to make a community of the middle way a reality. However, we can all expect to stumble. We live in a far from perfect world. Following the straight path is an extensive task requiring continual critical self-reflection as well as profound reasoning to understand and wrestle with the injustices and inequities in the world around us. In this endeavour, we can derive support and encouragement from the fact that God knows our intentions. Faith does not make us perfect, but continual striving, despite our failings and what stems from these failings, is not a worthless exercise. For, it is a purification for the teeth and a means of seeking God's pleasure. Gabriel recommended that I use the miswak every time he came. So much so that I began to fear that it would become obligatory for my umma. If I had not thought it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with miswak for every prayer. I use miswak so relentlessly that it seems as if my teeth (or my gum) will be scraped off." [Ibn Majah] This hadith, reported by forty different people, clearly shows that miswak is a Sunna of God's Messenger (peace be upon him) and has many benefits. So this Prophetic practice should be followed by believers. Using miswak is important as a preventive measure and will continue to be so in the future. In another hadith he says, "Surely your mouths are ways for the Quran. Clean them with miswak" [Bukhari]. Although the word miswak is used in the Prophet's sayings, it is clear that the main point that is stressed is the cleansing of the teeth. This can be done in any way, rubbing with fingers, using a toothbrush, or dental floss. On the other hand, the importance of miswak lies in the fact that it contains fluorine, which is useful for teeth health. Studies about miswak have shown that some enzymes excreted by the essence of miswak are protective against germs, that it protects teeth enamel, feeds the gums, and that it is also useful for the stomach because of its sweet smell. Certainly, if cleansing the mouth is done with God's good pleasure in mind, the importance of religious rules for our daily life will be better understood. In any case, believers should brush their teeth with miswak or toothbrush whenever they perform ablution for the prayers. Games that bring the family closer Father's reading the newspaper, mother's on the telephone, brother's on the computer, sister's reading a book, and little Ahmad is playing with his toys. What do these people have in common? Nothing. How can they be brought together? Young and old, we all love games. What better way to share each other's company, learn about Islam and have fun at the same time than to play a game? Below are three games to play with the whole family. 1. 'Steps to Paradise' Board Game. This board game, made in England, has questions for different age or knowledge levels. Answer the questions on Islam as you move around the board. And if you have collected enough Sawab (reward) then you might be able to enter Paradise. 2. Question and Answer Cards. Pre-made cards with questions and answers on Islam are readily available. Split the family into two teams and compete with each other to see who has the most right answers. The 'losing' team can do something together for the 'winning' team, for example, cook dinner. (This may mean that dad and some of the children may be cooking dinner for mum!) If pre-made cards are not available, then get into your teams and design the questions for the other team to answer. 3. Treasure Hunting. Mum or Dad designs a treasure hunt for the rest of the family. The number of clues, in the form of questions, depends on how many letters the secret place that contains the prize has. For example, if a cake awaits them in the REFRIGERATOR then 13 questions are needed. The first question needs to have an answer starting with R. For example, "What is the name of Surah 13?" The answer is "Ra'd". Each first letter of the answers form the final word. Draw a map and place each question on a card at each location. Once the code is cracked all can share the prize. An important note to keep in mind is that when teams are called for, make sure it's randomly selected. Also, for each game, team members will be different each time. If team members remain the same all the time, rivalry will be set up and not all members will have the chance to work with the others.
