SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN STEM

Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP) develops and supports SACP Sports Analytics
Clubs at high schools and middle schools across the United States. We aim to
promote equity excellence in the opportunity for young women, Black and Latino
youth to be competitive in the field of Data Science.

Many young people in underrepresented communities may not have the opportunity
to explore STEM and data science careers. By providing access to these fields
through our data science clubs, students can develop an interest and gain
experience that may inspire them to pursue related careers.

From data analysis to machine learning to data visualization, our clubs offer a
range of opportunities to develop skills needed for STEM careers. Our members
have access to cutting-edge tools and technologies and can work on projects
across a variety of sports, from basketball to soccer to baseball.

DATA SCIENCE IS THE FUTURE

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF DATA SCIENCE

The SACP program is designed to give students a competitive edge in the
technology workforce. Our members have access to University Professors and
Professional Sports Data Scientists from the NBA, NFL, and MLB, who provide
guidance and mentorship throughout their learning journey.

Students in our clubs work on real-world projects to develop essential soft
skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. Our program
provides a collaborative environment where students can work on sports analytics
projects, share ideas, and learn from industry professionals.

In addition to gaining valuable technical skills, our students also work on
revenue-driven business intelligence research projects. For example, they
analyze ticket pricing and fan engagement to provide insights that can help
sports organizations drive revenue.

Our comprehensive program helps students develop the skills they need to succeed
in STEM careers while also providing them with the opportunity to make a
real-world impact through sports analytics projects.

PYTHON/R PROGRAMMING

Python and R have many libraries and functions that allow for easy data
collection and cleaning, making it easier for students to manage and prepare
data for analysis. Students learn programming concepts and syntax, such as
variables, functions, and loops.

SOURCING DATA

They then learn how to source data from different sources such as public data
repositories, web scraping, and surveys. Including how to clean and prepare the
data for analysis, which often involves removing missing values, outliers, and
other data quality issues.

ANALYZE AND AGGREGATE DATA

Organizing the data into meaningful groups or categories based on relevant
variables. Students can learn how to use statistical methods to analyze data,
test hypotheses, and make predictions.

DATA VISUALIZATIONS

Creation of data visualizations such as histograms, scatter plots, and bar
charts to better understand the data and communicate their findings.

PROGRAM BENEFITS

Our program is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to
pursue careers in data science and sports analytics.  The predicated outcome is
diversification in the field of data science and the production of the next
generation of Black and Latino men and women Data Scientists.

PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS

PROGRAM IMPACT

SACP provides a unique opportunity for high school students to develop valuable
skills and gain real-world experience in data analysis and sports management,
setting them up for success in future careers in data science.

SACP clubs are led by STEM teachers and mentored by university professors and
professional sports data scientists. Students in SACP clubs work on real-world
projects that use data science to solve problems in sports.

In addition to working on projects, SACP clubs also participate in workshops and
conferences where they can learn from industry professionals and network with
other students interested in sports analytics.
