WILL THE COLD WEATHER CONTINUE?

We may have entered meteorological spring, but cold weather at this time of year
is not totally unusual.

It's hard to forget when the country shivered in the icy grip of the 'Beast from
the East' in late February and early March 2018.

Snow has already brought disruption to parts of the UK and more is expected to
fall, with 10-20cm likely in areas covered by an amber Met Office warning.

But when will this cold snap end?

Amber warnings for parts of northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland are set
to have ended by midday tomorrow, while a broader snow warning is in place until
2pm - but that won't mark the end of the cold weather.

Although the weekend will be milder for lots of us, a yellow snow and ice
warning is in place for northern England and a large part of Scotland from 3pm
on Saturday until 6am on Sunday.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin says next week could bring a "continued battleground"
between colder conditions and milder air pushing in from the Atlantic.

There will be "colder interludes" and the "potential for further snow" next
week, he says.

There's no warnings in place just yet, but it's fair to say we won't need our
shorts and t-shirts for a little while.

NEW YELLOW WEATHER WARNING FOR SNOW AND ICE

A new yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for several
regions of the UK tomorrow.

Parts of the Midlands, southeast and southwest England and South Wales will be
covered by the warning from 4am until 10am.

The Met Office warns that two to four centimetres of snow is likely in parts of
Wales and on higher ground such as the Cotswolds.

Icy surfaces are also likely to develop, it warns.

Areas of "mainly light" snow and ice could cause disruption to travel.

AMBULANCE SERVICE PRIORITISES 'LIFE-SAVING' NON-EMERGENCY TRIPS DUE TO WEATHER

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) had to scale back one of its
non-emergency services due to the snowy weather.

A transport service which helps patients with medical conditions get to their
appointments independently was prioritising patients with "life-saving"
appointments such as chemo and radiotherapy today.

EMAS said its crews were having to drive more slowly due to the icy conditions.

SCHOOLS CONFIRM THEY'LL BE SHUT TOMORROW

Some schools have already confirmed they will be shut tomorrow as arctic weather
brings snow and travel disruption to the UK.

Flintshire County Council in North Wales has announced that all of its schools
will be shut on 10 March.

A large part of North Wales is currently covered by an amber Met Office warning,
with 10 to 20cm of snow likely.

At least five schools in the Welsh county of Wrexham have announced via Twitter
that they will be closed tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Council has so far announced 10 providers will be closed on
10 March.

Schools in Birmingham and Wolverhampton have also let parents know about school
closures via social media this evening.

You can find out whether a school is shut using your postcode here.

'EXTREME' RISK OF WILDFIRES IN PARTS OF SCOTLAND

Parts of Scotland are at risk of wildfires over the next two days, the Scottish
Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has said.

In south west Scotland, the risk is "extreme" until Sunday, the service said,
while central-eastern Scotland has a "very high risk".

SFRS said the forecast for the next few days - which is "dominated by
low-pressure, warm air to the south and cold air to the north" - combined with
low humidity in southwest Scotland, has increased the risk.

The wildfire warnings come as an Arctic blast brings snow - and in some places
blizzards - to the UK.

A blanket of snow covered parts of Scotland on Tuesday, but much of the country
has enjoyed a chilly but dry day today.

SFRS station commander John Harvey has  urged the public to act "safely and
responsibly" in the countryside.

“With dry, winter conditions this weekend, wildfires could burn and spread with
very high intensity in high-risk areas," he added.

Mr Harvey warned people to "dispose of cigarettes carefully" "think twice before
using anything involving a naked flame".

SHEEP BRAVE THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES

Some of us might not tolerate the cold weather well - but sheep are made of
hardier stuff, as their winter wool coats insulate them from the bitter
temperatures.

These snaps of the animals were taken in Northern Ireland and Northamptonshire
today.

WHAT'S THE FORECAST FOR TONIGHT?

As we've reported, the Met Office is warning that heavy snow and strong winds
could cause blizzards and "atrocious travel conditions" in some areas of the UK
this evening.

The Met Office says 10 to 20cm of snow could fall in parts of northern England
and Wales covered by an amber warning tonight and tomorrow morning, while
Northern Ireland could see four to eight centimetres.

Meteorologist Alex Deakin said rural communities could get cut off and
significant disruption is likely in amber warning areas.

Snow which has been working its way into Northern Ireland this afternoon is
expected to linger into the evening, Mr Deakin says.

Heavy snowfall will continue over northern England through the night,
particularly over the Transpennine route, he said.

Meanwhile, an area of low pressure is set to strengthen winds through the South
West, which has seen milder temperatures today.

Mr Deakin said "blustery conditions" will feed snow into Northern Ireland
throughout the night and some coastal areas could see rain in the early hours of
tomorrow morning.

Rain is also forecast for eastern England early tomorrow.

Scotland, which has seen clearer spells today, is in for another cold night -
though temperatures aren't expected to plummet to levels we've seen there over
the last two nights.

PARAKEET SPOTTED AT BIRMINGHAM BIRD FEEDER

As any ornithologist will tell you, birds invariably have more difficulty
sourcing food in wintry conditions.

Birmingham is among the areas of England to have received a significant blanket
of snow over the last 24 hours - leaving the second city's famous population of
parakeets a greater challenge in finding their daily sustenance.

One of the colourful birds was pictured making the most of the feeder in a
garden there earlier today.

Penny Williams

The RSPB advises those with bird feeders to go to extra lengths during the
winter months, saying: "At this time of year, put out food and water on a
regular basis. In severe weather, feed twice daily if you can: in the morning
and in the early afternoon.

"Birds require high-energy (high-fat) foods during the cold winter weather to
maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights. Use only good-quality
food and scraps.

"Always adjust the quantity given to the demand, and never allow uneaten foods
to accumulate around the feeders. Once you establish a feeding routine, try not
to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your
garden accordingly."

DOGS DON COLOURFUL GEAR AS THEY ARRIVE AT CRUFTS

Dogs wrapped up warm in bright coats and knitted hats as they arrived in the
snow for the prestigious Crufts dog show.

The annual show, which kicks off today and runs until March 12, will see a range
of pooches compete to be named the winner in their category.

One owner dressed their dog in a bright yellow knitted hat and a red and blue
fleece as they battled through the snow to arrive at the National Exhibition
Centre in Birmingham,

Another wore a striking purple and red jacket, while Felicity, a Samoyed, looked
happy as she sheltered from the snow under a rainbow umbrella.

They weren't the only ones sporting bright gear - a pink onesie, zebra print top
and beige Burberry scarf were also donned by other dogs in the competition.

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS ISSUES TRAVEL ALERTS

Three travel alerts have been issued by National Highways as severe weather
continues to cause disruption.

The A628 Woodhead Pass is closed in both directions between the A616 (Flouch)
and the A57 (Hollingworth) due to snow.

Drivers have been advised to use the M60, M62 and M1 as an alternative route and
allow extra time for their journey.

Snow is expected to be persistent and heavy from Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire
northwards, with significant accumulations above 100-150m.

The A66 is also closed in both directions between the A685 (Brough) and the
A1(M) (Scotch Corner) due to heavy snowfall.

People travelling across the Pennines have been asked to consider using the A69
or the M62.

A severe weather alert for snow in the Midlands and north of England was issued
for today, and National Highways has asked everyone travelling in these areas to
consider if their journey is essential and to go prepared.

Freight traffic has been strongly advised to plan journeys in advance and find
alternative routes.

'ATROCIOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS' EXPECTED FOR AMBER WARNING AREAS

The Met Office says heavy snow expected in some areas of the UK over the next 24
hours will bring "atrocious travel conditions" and possibly even power cuts.

Three amber warnings are in place for snow in parts of northern England, Wales
and Northern Ireland today, tonight and tomorrow morning.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin says heavy snow will drop "significant
amounts easily", with four to eight cm of snow likely in Northern Ireland.

He added that 10 to 20cm of snow could fall in the areas of northern England and
Wales covered by the warning - with snowfall of up to 40cm possible in hilly
areas of northern England.

Mr Deakin said strengthening winds could cause blizzards, leading to "atrocious
travel conditions".

"Significant disruption" is expected in the amber warning areas, and he warned
rural communities may be cut off.

"There is the potential for some power issues," he said.

A broader yellow snow warning is in place for vast swathes of the UK over the
next couple of days - though the worst of the weather is expected to miss
southern England and Wales.

Mr Deakin said snow will move into Northern Ireland this afternoon and linger
into the evening, while it will continue over the hills of northern England.

He warned although snow might ease over North Wales, conditions could turn "very
icy" in the area, and "the snow may well return through the night".
