Non-Sterile Pharmacy Compounding is a process by which a pharmacist prepares
drugs by combining, mixing, or altering ingredients into a pharmaceutical
preparation. These preparations are designed to be administered by a route that
does not require sterility, in accordance with a practitioner’s prescription
drug order.

Sterile Pharmacy Compounding is the practice of preparing custom medications for
patients in a sterile environment to prevent contamination and maintain patient
safety. PCAB Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation for sterile compounding involves
measuring a specific set of process standards that concentrate on the quality
and consistency of medications.

The additional accreditation recognizes organizations that demonstrate a
commitment to meeting criteria set forth in USP Chapter <800>, Hazardous
Drugs—Handling in Healthcare Settings. The HDH standards, which reflect the
efforts of a broad collective of industry experts, are aimed at protecting
patients, pharmacy personnel, and the environment. The Distinction in HDH must
be achieved in combination with ACHC or PCAB Pharmacy Accreditation.

*The provider must have PCAB Accreditation to earn a Distinction in Hazardous
Drug Handling.
