buy something REALLY Special?

So... how did it all start?...

It has taken Wirral-based Children's Author Martyn Harvey three-and-a-half YEARS
(from a knock on the door and some FREE Fish 'n' Chips) to get to this point -
to release the full and final version of what he's hoping will become a
children's classic: Squiggly Pete and the Curse of the Monster Zombie Mushy
Peas... Invasion... Apocalypse... Thingy, to give it its full title. (Phew!)

Yes - it all started when the Parkgate Fish and Chip Shop had to temporarily
close during the Covid Lockdowns of January 2021: Martyn was sitting at home
(then, in School Lane in Parkgate) when he heard a knock on the door and
answered it to the lovely lady from the chip shop, who was distributing free
fish 'n' chips to locals - what a lovely gesture at that difficult time!

Martyn, being a fond lover of Fish 'n Chips (of course) couldn't refuse and it
made a delicious lunch for him and his young friend William (aged 8) who were,
at that moment, in a "business" meeting, discussing ideas for a series of Zoom
sessions Martyn was about to read for local kids, stuck at home.

...and...WHAT's with that title!

Martyn was already planning to bring to life a character he had sketched some
years previously, for a bedtime story for his own daughters (then aged about 6
or 7 and now "all growed up" as they say in Cornwall). This character, who had
lain "dormant" in a single sketch and the dusty attic of Martyn's brain for over
a decade, now leapt to the fray and it was quickly decided that eccentric pirate
"Squiggly Pete" should be at the centre of the stories... but WHAT would the
stories be about?

As they messily munched their way through the feast, a half-spoonful of Mushy
Peas suddenly found itself hurtling Earthwards, down, down onto the previously
polished pine parquet and landing... PLOP... right in the middle of the kitchen
floor!

"Well..." said Martyn "...I guess that's as good a topic as any!" ...and the
title was born: "Squiggly Pete and the Curse of the Mushy Peas!"

"Hmm..." (he said, reflecting) "It sounds a bit 'tame'... I'd better make them
MONSTER Mushy Peas..."

Martyn and William laughed. William's mum, Sarah, didn't find it so funny and
went to get her mop.

"Although..." added William, stroking his young, beardless chin and rolling his
eyes sagaciously, "...technically - since they're now DEAD, on the floor... if
they come back to life in your story... they'll be MONSTER ZOMBIE Mushy Peas"

This sounded EVEN BETTER than the original title so, without much further ado,
the story was decided: A wacky, bumbling Pirate, a quaint Northern English
seaside village... and a MOUNTAIN of Mushy Peas! What could possibly go
wrong?...

Well, first, there's the cat...

So... if you're going to run some hi-tech, fully-automated, boot-stomping,
mush-pumping gadetry in your Mushy Pea-making unit, you really shouldn't let a
CAT anywhere near that stuff... especially one as mischievous as "Arthur"...
because you KNOW what's going to happen!

And that's what DID happen - although it wasn't the Chip Shop owner's fault:
Arthur found his own way in through an open window and... well - you know what
cats are like: With all those swinging, rotating, oscillating bits and pieces,
sooner or later... something was going to get broken!

So I suppose it wasn't entirely Arthur's fault that he basically single-handedly
caused one of the North West's most serious Mushy Pea incidents in recorded
history: Maybe it was just... "an accident waiting to happen"??

...and the Rats!

Now... they were entirely Squiggly Pete's fault: He drew them at the very start
of the story and, once they had been brought to life with lhis Magic Pencil...
they kind of... got out of hand... and turned up anywhere and everywhere there
was some food to get hold of!

The rats just did their usual ratty thing - follow around the humans and
scavenge whatever they could! Curiously, these rats seem very fond of eating
Mushy Peas!

...and then, there's Squiggly Pete!

Ok... we know that Squiggly Pete is a bit of an odd character - An eccentric,
oddball, quirky, intriguing bungler of a pirate - and those are just the nice
things people say about him!

But... he has this Magic Pencil - and, with that, he can draw ANYTHING he wants
(or needs). And so, he sets about drawing a couple of pirate buddies - Lucy Lu
and Little Jack, who quickly come to life and join him on his adventures.

He draws a pirate ship and they head off to Parkgate, in Wirral, in search of
the FAMOUS Fish 'n' Chips (Pete loves his chips!) But when they get there... the
famous chip shop is... famously CLOSED!

Oh dear... and he's brought out his last 50 quid!

Not only that... but the Chip Shop's (Top Secret - Sshhh!) Giant Mushy Peas
Machine has gone beserk and is churning out Mushy Peas quicker than a whole
battalion of hungry teenagers could eat them!!!

Then, to make matters worse, a very officious-looking lady from The Council
turns up and Pete and his Crew are given the task of clearing up the whole Mushy
Pea Mess and, when Pete starts doodling Pea Surfers and is clearly not taking
the matter seriously... things get rapidly worse!

Fortunately (for everyone) Pete's crew-member Lucy turns out to be the sensible
one in the group - the natural leader - and manages to rein in the errant Peter.
Pretty soon, she has made Peter draw a GIANT HOOVER to suck up the Mushy Peas...
and a Rocket-ship extension to his little single-masted boat and they fly off
over Liverpool, hoping to launch the peas into space!

About the author

Martyn Harvey was born in Plymouth in the early 1960s and attended Humphry Davy
Grammar School in Penzance - not straight away, of course - but a few years
later!

At school, Martyn learned a lot of useful stuff like playing the violin, writing
and even a smattering of Latin - "Cogidubnus in horto est" (!) - and went on to
study classical music at Leicester University. Being passionate about music, one
degree was not enough, so he went on to do another, gaining a Masters Degree in
20th Century Composition (from Huddersfield University) and wrote some pretty
whacky music!

Then, with a young family starting, a new house and a mortgage to pay, Martyn
was persuaded to "get a proper job"... and turned his hand to computer
programming and web development, working for a major software company in the
Midlands: It was while he was there, that Martyn learned a load of REALLY useful
stuff like self-publishing and web design - skills he used to develop this very
web site!

And then, when his own daughters were young, around 2004, he started writing and
illustrating little stories for them. These stories have grown into a body of
work which is continuing to develop, and you'll see more of his forthcoming book
projects mentioned on this web site.
