PORTO ALEGRE

Porto Alegre (local Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtʊ aˈlɛɡɾɪ];Joyful Harbour)
is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Founded in 1769 by Manuel Sepúlveda, its population of 1,509,939 inhabitants
(2010) makes it the tenth most populous city in the country and the centre of
Brazil's fourth largest metropolitan area, with 4,405,760 inhabitants (2010).
The city is the southernmost capital city of a Brazilian state.

Porto Alegre was founded in 1769 by Manuel Jorge Gomes de Sepúlveda, who used
the pseudonym José Marcelino de Figueiredo to hide his identity; but the
official date is 1772 with the act signed by immigrants from the Azores,
Portugal. The vast majority of the population is of European descent.

The city lies on the eastern bank of the Rio Guaiba (Guaiba Lake), where five
rivers converge to form the Lagoa dos Patos (Lagoon of the Ducks), a giant
freshwater lagoon navigable by even the largest of ships. This five-river
junction has become an important alluvial port as well as a chief industrial and
commercial center of Brazil.

 * BRAZIL FLOODS: MAN NARROWLY AVOIDS DEATH AFTER MOTORWAY BRIDGE COLLAPSES

The death toll from floods and mudslides triggered by torrential storms in
southern Brazil climbed to 39 on Friday, officials said, as they warned of
worse to come. In one video posted online, a motorway bridge in Santa Maria,
southern Brazil, can be seen buckling in front of people’s eyes amid high
flood waters on Tuesday. One man who is just about to step onto the bridge
narrowly avoids falling in after stepping back just in time. As the rain kept
beating down on Friday, rescuers in boats and planes searched for scores of
people reported missing among the ruins of collapsed homes, bridges and
roads. Rising water levels in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were straining
dams and threatening the metropolis of Porto Alegre with “unprecedented”
   flooding, authorities warned. #brazil #flood...

Drone footage showed buildings submerged in flood water in the Brazilian city of
Porto Alegre after heavy rains lashed southern Brazil. The death toll caused by
flooding in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has risen to at least
78, local authorities said on Sunday, with more than 115,000 people displaced.
Floods have destroyed roads and bridges in several cities. The rains also
triggered landslides and the partial collapse of a dam at a small hydroelectric
power plant. Flooding from storms in the past few days has affected more than
two thirds of the nearly 500 cities in the state, which borders Uruguay and
Argentina. Read more:

The death toll from floods and mudslides triggered by torrential storms in
southern Brazil climbed to 39 on Friday, officials said, as they warned of worse
to come. In one video posted online, a motorway bridge in Santa Maria, southern
Brazil, can be seen buckling in front of people’s eyes amid high flood waters on
Tuesday. One man who is just about to step onto the bridge narrowly avoids
falling in after stepping back just in time. As the rain kept beating down on
Friday, rescuers in boats and planes searched for scores of people reported
missing among the ruins of collapsed homes, bridges and roads. Rising water
levels in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were straining dams and threatening the
metropolis of Porto Alegre with “unprecedented” flooding, authorities warned.

Drone footage showed buildings submerged in flood water in the Brazilian city
of Porto Alegre after heavy rains lashed southern Brazil. The death toll
caused by flooding in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has risen
to at least 78, local authorities said on Sunday, with more than 115,000
people displaced. Floods have destroyed roads and bridges in several cities.
The rains also triggered landslides and the partial collapse of a dam at a
small hydroelectric power plant. Flooding from storms in the past few days
has affected more than two thirds of the nearly 500 cities in the state,
which borders Uruguay and Argentina. Read more:

#brazil #flooding #bridgecollapse Read more

#brazil #flooding #bridgecollapse Read more
