However, a pilot can only choose to fly IFR if they possess an instrument rating
which is above and beyond the basic pilot’s license that must also be
held.Ĭontrolled airspace is divided into several different types, designated by
letters of the alphabet. On a clear day, a pilot in controlled airspace can
choose a VFR or IFR flight plan, and the FAA regulations were devised in a
way which accommodates both VFR and IFR operations in the same airspace. Poor
visibility necessitated a set of Instrumental Flight Rules (IFR), under which
the pilot relied on altitude and navigational information provided by
the plane’s instrument panel to fly safely. In good meteorological conditions,
flying would be permitted under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), which suggests a
strong reliance on visual cues to maintain an acceptable level of safety. The
FAA then recognised two types of operating environments. In this way, the
recreational pilot who simply wishes to go flying for a while without all
the restrictions imposed by the FAA has only to stay in uncontrolled airspace,
below 365m, while the pilot who does want the protection afforded by ATC can
easily enter the controlled airspace. Controlled airspace is that airspace in
which FAA regulations apply. Elsewhere, in uncontrolled airspace, pilots are
bound by fewer regulations. In certain areas, mainly near airports, controlled
airspace extends down to 215m above the ground, and, in the immediate vicinity
of an airport, all the way down to the surface. In general, from 365m above
the ground and higher, the entire country is blanketed by controlled airspace.

First, ATC extends over virtually the entire United States. To meet this
challenge, the following elements were put into effect. The FAA realised that
the airspace over the United States would at any time have many different kinds
of planes, flying for many different purposes, in a variety of weather
conditions, and the same kind of structure was needed to accommodate all of
them. This is a very incomplete part of the picture. Many people think that ATC
consists of a row of controllers sitting in front of their radar screens at the
nation’s airports, telling arriving and departing traffic what to do. It was
only after the creation of the FAA that full-scale regulation of America’s
airspace took place, and this was fortuitous, for the advent of the jet engine
suddenly resulted in a large number of very fast planes, reducing pilots’ margin
of error and practically demanding some set of rules to keep everyone well
separated and operating safely in the air. In the 1940s, ATC centres could and
did take advantage of the newly developed radar and improved radio communication
brought about by the Second World War, but the system remained rudimentary. The
first region to have something approximating today’s ATC was New York City, with
other major metropolitan areas following soon after. However, this purely visual
system was useless in bad weather, and, by the 1930s, radio communication was
coming into use for ATC. As early as the 1920s, the earliest air traffic
controllers manually guided aircraft in the vicinity of the airports, using
lights and flags, while beacons and flashing lights were placed along
cross-country routes to establish the earliest airways. Rudimentary air traffic
control (ATC) existed well before the Grand Canyon disaster. The resulting
structure of air traffic control has greatly increased the safety of flight in
the United States, and similar air traffic control procedures are also in place
over much of the rest of the world. An accident that occurred in the skies over
the Grand Canyon in 1956 resulted in the establishment of the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) to regulate and oversee the operation of aircraft in the
skies over the United States, which were becoming quite congested.

‘Bridesmaids’ and ‘Pitch Perfect’. By the second year of law school I was
already working professionally as an actress and I could’ve quit. And there are
a lot of eccentric characters in that world. If you’ve ever seen the movie “
Best in Show”, that was my life growing up, going to the dog shows every
weekend. Your siblings are called Liberty, Annachi and Ryot. Maybe it’s because
I wasn’t born with a lot of advantages or privileges. I was very academic and
studied hard at school. I never quite knew what I wanted to do, but I thought
I’d be successful. A lot of people are shocked that I have two degrees, one of
which is a law degree.’

I try to be smart and sensible in my real life. I can be really fun, but the
reality is that what I do is really hard work. People expect me to be comedy
“on” all the time, which of course I’m not. Now I realise there’s such a market
for plus-size clothing that’s still cool and trendy and fits really well and is
nice fabrics.’ ‘A lot of people are shocked that I have two degrees’ĭo people
expect you to be Fat Amy when they meet you? I was like: whatever, I’ll just
wear my tracksuit. ‘I think maybe I wasn’t into fashion before because fashion
never cared for me. I’m creating a clothing line in October.’ Now that’s changed
and I have to pay attention. ‘It’s strange because I’m a person who values
what’s up here. You really have to make your own opportunities, and do the best
with the material you’re given.’Īfter ‘Bridesmaids’ did you find fame, all the
red carpet stuff intimidating? When you’re starting out it’s not like you’re
given all these amazing roles. Even though I only had four scenes in the film
people remembered me.

But after “Bridesmaids” I booked six movies in two weeks. ‘My original goal was
to get in just one Hollywood film. What was your ambition when you arrived in
LA? Why not?” And I just went about doing it.’ I mean no one thought I would be
a professional actress. I was shy as a kid, but I always had confidence in my
skills and abilities. Where does that inner confidence come from? And where can
I get it? But a lot of people have told me that I am comfortable in my own skin.
No one really saw my butt.’įat Amy is such a brilliant character. And I had
Spanx on – with a butt crack drawn on.

I am afraid of heights, but I just sucked it up. I chose to suffer for the sake
of comedy.

It was either me or a completely new start to the film. I had to, because there
are no stunt girls my size. Is it true that you went to circus school to

concert hall. Okay, let’s talk about that opening scene in ‘Pitch Perfect 2’.
The sequel, out this week, opens with Fat Amy flashing her vagina to President
Obama on his birthday in front of a crowd of thousands. Within two weeks, she
signed up to six new films, including ‘Pitch Perfect’. It was a tiny part but
here’s the thing about Rebel Wilson – she’s got a knack for stealing every scene
she appears in. The 29-year-old moved to Hollywood in 2010 after working on the
stand-up circuit and TV in Australia, and within months landed a role in ‘
Bridesmaids’ playing Kristen Wiig’s flatmate. Put simply, Rebel Wilson is the
living, breathing woman you want to be after reading Sheryl Sandberg’s
motivational book ‘Lean In’. In the flesh, stretched out on a sofa at
Claridges’s, the actress is one of the most impressive people I’ve met – funny,
yes, but totally focussed and refreshingly honest about her ambition, refusing
play down her intelligence. Disappointing because Fat Amy (she calls herself
that so ‘twig bitches’ don’t do it behind her back) is one of the most hilarious
characters in recent movie memory – so funny people have taken to wearing her
off-the-wall one-liners on t-shirts. This is disappointing for precisely as long
as it takes for her to answer my first question. Rebel Wilson is not Fat Amy –
the character she plays in ‘ Pitch Perfect’.
