A year ago in April of 2020 Americans were grappling with the early impact of
Covid-19 on their lifestyles, careers, and families. As the country slowly shut
down state by state, many people turned inward, reflecting and living
intentionally with their immediate family. Some took to online communities,
joining digital church services, participating in online gaming or networking in
new virtual professional communities.  No matter the reason for reaching out
digitally, all sought connection and belonging during a time of physical
distancing and national tumult. Conversations were naturally birthed in these
spaces about health, justice, and wellbeing, as Americans reckoned with not only
the global pandemic but deeply entrenched racial injustices sparked by the loss
of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

For many Americans, the connections and conversations of the past year will
likely outlive and outlast this moment. And, it begets the question, how can
people move from talking about change in communities to acting on it?

For Philanthropy Together and Grapevine, the past year was filled with similar
reflection and desire for action. Both platforms are part of the giving circle
movement, a way of practicing collective giving that is rooted in community. In
this practice, people come together to pool their donations and decide as a
group where to give the total amount. Typically they repeat this every month,
quarter, or year for sustained impact. This ensures community-driven investment
in critical issues such as racial injustice, gender equity, and poverty
alleviation. With a history of helping people around the world resource change
effectively in their local neighborhoods, these two  organizations are well
suited to collaborate for the times we are living in, according to the Executive
Director of Philanthropy Together, Sara Lomelin. “A few years ago, we set out to
make it easy for people who care about their community to get started in
collaborative giving: to literally get a giving circle up and running in a
minute. Really! So imagine, now, after Covid-19, there is your new group,
online, at work, at home, neighbors on your street, and you can come together to
pool funds and make a difference around the things you have been concerned about
or have heard about. It isn't intimidating and doesn't take a lot of time or
effort to get a giving group started. We have the tools (at Philanthropy
Together) and Grapevine makes it easy with their technology.”

Philanthropy Together helps people launch giving circles around the world.

Philanthropy Together

While Philanthropy Together uniquely works to empower giving circles, Grapevine
provides an online payment and community solution for groups to easily launch,
grow and succeed. Having met in 2019 and begun conversations, Lomelin and
Grapevine’s Founder, Emily Rasmussen, sat down for a deeper conversation about
elevating collaborative philanthropy as Covid-19 was arriving to American soil
in early 2020. “We sat down and realized that the last research done in 2017 by
the Collective Giving Research Group, well... it lives in a Google Spreadsheet
and we could not do anything with it. We needed it active, dynamic, and alive to
serve communities! We both realized that if our strategic focus is to sustain
the collective giving field and make this a thriving place for donors from all
walks of life, we should create a directory. I knew, the moment Grapevine
launched, they would be a perfect partner. Their tech expertise and the beauty
of the platform itself and it’s user friendly-ness... I said, oh yes! Our
partnership began shortly after.”

Grapevine is a unique technology emerging as a leader in the philanthropic
sector.

Grapevine

Growing the collective giving field is a worthy mission. Communities throughout
the globe are creating lasting impact as the philanthropic sector observes and
measures the speed and outcomes of projects that have full community investment.
According to research done by the Global Fund for Community Foundations, it is
becoming more and more clear, since the onset of Covid-19, that a strong
presence of community-led philanthropic vehicles allows for quick responses and
solutions when health, social and economic situations arise. Aware of this data
and with a hope to also make it easy and fun to get giving, Rasmussen and
Lomelin are launching the Global Giving Circle Directory this month.

Rasmussen shares that the directory, which publicly launches on April 14th, will
support the overall collective giving movement by serving as a place where
people can search, find and join giving circles all throughout the globe. “We
are creating an embeddable directory that can live on donor platforms
everywhere. Now, it will be easy to introduce a much broader range of donors to
giving circles and give them the tools to directly discover and browse ways to
participate and invest. Plus, they can get inspired by all the great work
happening around the world and really feel part of this movement that’s coming
alive!”

This movement of collective giving is now being seen as a place for anyone who
feels ready to take action to do so effectively. Take Vic King for example, a
young man from Baltimore who started a giving circle last year inspired by his
church community. The circle, Sunday Fund, meets a few times a year and grants
out unrestricted dollars to Black and Brown Christian leaders and minority-led
ministries for racial justice and reconciliation, towards the peace and unity of
the church. Philanthropy Together’s signature program, Launchpad For You, helped
King conceptualize and launch the circle during Covid-19, after five weeks of
coaching and training. Then, Grapevine provided him the tools to easily connect
his members, pool their donations, nominate nonprofits, track their grantmaking,
and grow their group. Circles like those started by King will now be accessible
to people around the world so they can join communities and give to issues,
places, and approaches they want to see fully funded in the world.

“The beauty of having one, online home where the history of these circles is
tracked and visible is that anyone can now easily learn about and participate in
this exciting movement. Giving circles vary widely from the communities they
gather together to the causes, organizations and geographies they support. Our
hope is that seeing this variety will inspire others to join these groups or
adopt and adapt this model to fit their own interests, communities and needs.
And regardless of what kind of group you’re inspired to join or launch, we have
the tools to help you succeed. So much is opening up with this technology.”
Rasmussen is hopeful that this new Directory will empower many people to feel
joy and ease in being philanthropically engaged in the coming years.

“And there is so much possibility! I am personally excited to see influential
women lead giving circles. Think Oprah and others! What if influencers created
networks of giving circles? Think from book club to giving circle! You read and
explore ideas, then show up together! Why shouldn't every group or club have a
giving circle element? The possibilities are endless.”

The new Global Giving Circle Directory can be viewed on Grapevine’s website.
Both Lomelin and Rasmussen encourage readers to check it out and consider
joining a giving circle that resonates with them or bringing it back to their
own networks to start a new giving circle to enhance their community’s
connection. Its a great way to make a difference and perhaps address some of the
difficult and complex issues from the last year. Lomelin shares her vision for
this directory and the community that is listed within it that, “10 years from
now, I would love to see giving circles ubiquitous and a household name. Just
more and more people becoming a part of this movement. The directory is an
opportunity to learn about giving circles and it gives people something really
tangible to look at and help them understand what it means.”
