NINE WAYS TO BOOST YOUR ONLINE SECURITY TODAY

By Katie Levene

As we interact with our accounts more online, safeguarding our financial
accounts becomes increasingly important.

Feeling unsure where to begin? You're not alone. Despite the widespread
understanding that unique passwords enhance security, a staggering 45% of
internet users admit to reusing passwords, according to YouGov.

To kickstart your journey towards better security, we've created a list of nine
actionable steps you can take right now to protect your accounts.

While there are more strategies beyond this list, starting the process today can
help ensure a better financial future tomorrow. Let's get started toward
securing your online accounts.

TIPS TO STAY SAFE ONLINE

 1. Check for data breaches
 2. Revamp passwords
 3. Update usernames
 4. Consider new security questions
 5. Implement 2FA/MFA
 6. Monitor accounts with alerts
 7. Install antivirus and use a virtual private network (VPN)
 8. Avoid public Wi-Fi
 9. Freeze your credit

CHECK FOR DATA BREACHES

It can be a good idea to check the current status of your personal information.
There are several free services available that you can use to find if your
online presence has been compromised. Additionally, some password managers
automatically scan the passwords you store in them against databases that
contain compromised credentials. They often reference a site called "Have I Been
Pwned.” You can also search “Have I Been Pwned” for free to determine where,
when, and what information was exposed, enabling you to act quickly if needed.

REVAMP PASSWORDS

Take this opportunity to replace existing passwords with unique, strong
passwords, or passphrases (a combination of words and symbols). Begin with
critical financial accounts like your bank account, retirement account, or
health savings account (HSA).

Password managers can simplify this process by securely storing credentials and
automatically filling them in during logins.

UPDATE USERNAMES

Treat usernames as secondary passwords. Avoid using identifiable, personal
information like your name, date of birth, email address, or common combinations
of that information, especially for financial accounts. For example, George
Washington should stay away from usernames like gwashington, georgew, gwash1776,
etc.

You can also make usernames unique for each of your accounts — potentially
adding an extra layer between thieves and your financial information.

SECURITY QUESTIONS

Sometimes, answers to security questions are readily available online. Exercise
caution when selecting answers to common security questions. You should be the
only one who can gain access to your personal data.

Information like your mother's maiden name or first pet's name, often used as
security answers, often can be easily found on social media. Some experts
suggest providing false, but memorable, answers to enhance security.

IMPLEMENT TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (2FA) OR MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (MFA)

Enabling 2FA/MFA can add an extra layer of security by requiring a one-time
secondary code, typically sent via text, email or within an authenticator app,
alongside your password during login. This provides additional protection
compared to answering security questions to access your accounts. Even if your
password is compromised, a thief is less likely to be able to input the
secondary code.

Note: Do not give that secondary code to anyone. Your financial institution will
not ask you for that code.

MONITOR ACCOUNTS WITH AUTOMATED ALERTS

Set up automated alerts on your financial accounts to promptly detect and
respond to suspicious activities. Real-time fraud alerts via text or email,
along with purchase notifications, provide invaluable oversight.

Regularly monitor all your accounts for signs of fraudulent activity. Many
times, prompt reporting of any suspicious transactions is crucial for qualifying
for reimbursement in cases of fraud.

INSTALL ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE AND USE A VPN

Protect all your devices, including smartphones, by installing reputable
antivirus software. Remember to do your research before selecting any antivirus
service to be certain it can adequately protect the device you are buying it
for. Make sure your antivirus software is regularly active and checking your
security status. The sooner it finds a threat, the quicker you can get your
device more secure again.

Also, you can use a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your online traffic
for enhanced privacy and security.

AVOID PUBLIC WI-FI

A commonly ignored internet safety tip is the use of public Wi-Fi. Steer clear
of connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, which pose significant risks.

Since anyone can join a public network, you cannot be sure who has access to
your data. Hackers can intercept your data through something called a
“man-in-the-middle-attack” by setting up a fake network that looks very similar
to common public networks.

Instead, use secure connections, such as personal hotspots or mobile data, to
safeguard your sensitive information.

FREEZE YOUR CREDIT

Consider a credit freeze to restrict unauthorized access to your credit report.
This measure prevents identity thieves from opening new accounts in your name.
You can temporarily lift the freeze when needed by contacting the credit
reporting agencies.
