Alex LeanseWriterMotorTrend StaffPhotographerApr 12, 2024 What does Prime mean for the 2024 Toyota RAV4? It doesn’t signify a cabin lined in premium materials and futuristic tech. Rather, a Prime badge indicates a RAV4 plug-in hybrid, with hardware that enables all-electric range—about 40 miles. It’s the quickest Toyota SUV, too. Yet despite a starting price above $45,000 making it the most expensive RAV4 model, the Prime isn’t necessarily nicer inside than a version costing thousands less. Still, the optioned-up $51,294 RAV4 Prime XSE reviewed here shows what’s possible inside this popular small SUV. It shares some things with every RAV4 and others that are exclusive to higher-end models, so this interior review will help no matter which version of Toyota’s compact crossover you’re looking at. RAV4 PRIME INTERIOR: HOW IT LOOKS The RAV4’s basic cabin design provides a solid basis for the Prime to build on. How things look inside complements the bold, edgy exterior. Toughness is implied by the shaping of the door panels and dashboard, which have silver trim accentuating their angles. A hexagonal pattern applied to the speaker grates, cupholder liners, and bin ahead of the shift knob adds more visual interest. Items like the door handles, shift lever, and temperature control knobs are amusingly oversized, as if the RAV4 wants to prove it’s a big, bad SUV. Outside visibility is good thanks to the large windows and side mirrors. In Toyota-speak, the SE and XSE trim levels are reserved for sport-inspired models. Those are the grades available for the RAV4 Prime, which although indeed quick isn’t particularly fun to drive. Toyota nevertheless reminds you of those racy aspirations with red stitching and trim around the cabin. It looks spiffy without being too in-your-face, as it somewhat does in the 2024 Prius Prime XSE. This is the only interior item truly unique to the Prime in the RAV4 lineup; the TRD Off-Road model uses red stitching in different patterns while the Hybrid XSE has blue instead. Digital displays keep getting bigger, but the RAV4 Prime XSE remains competitive with its tech features. Its 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen is the upgrade over the 8.0-inch unit found in lesser models, positioned atop the dash to keep it in your line of sight. More impressive-looking is the 12.3-inch gauge cluster screen, which isn’t exceptionally high-resolution but can be reconfigured to show myriad data points or design themes. The head-up display equipped on our test vehicle as part of the Premium Package was a nice-to-have, not a need-to-have. RAV4 PRIME INTERIOR: HOW IT FEELS Touch around the RAV4 Prime’s cabin and things feel typical Toyota: solidly assembled, but not of noteworthy quality. Even so, the automaker was thoughtful in how it applied materials to certain areas. Textured rubber makes the front door pulls, temperature knobs, and volume dial more grippy. The door sills below the windows are finished with a soft-touch material, an area where some automakers leave hard plastic in more affordable models. Notably, that treatment is also applied to the rear doors, another part of an interior that’s often a target of cost-cutting. Yet cost cutting is evident in the RAV4 Prime’s cabin. The door release handles are cheap plastic that still show a molding seam. A similar material is found on the steering wheel horn pad. Those rubberized knobs feel nice on initial touch, but have a light action and nearly imperceptible detents that complicates accurately selecting a specific temperature or volume. More egregious is the heated steering wheel, part of an extra-cost Weather Package on all RAV4 models. The rim only warms near the horizontal spokes, resulting in frigid fingers if you rest them anywhere else. At least the heated seats get plenty toasty; the ventilation added by the Premium Package functions well. No RAV4 model, even the Prime, offers leather upholstery, instead using Toyota’s SofTex material which does a good enough imitation. The front seats themselves are ergonomic and supportive thanks to prominent side bolstering, but the padding within is too firm for optimal comfort. RAV4 PRIME INTERIOR: HOW IT WORKS Due to its plug-in hybrid hardware, the RAV4 Prime has slightly less cargo capacity than the standard and Hybrid models: 33.5 cubic feet compared to 37.6 cubic feet behind the second row, and 63.1 cubic feet versus 69.8 cubic feet when the second row is folded. Yet all RAV4 models provide clever and practical interior storage spaces, particularly the shelves shaped into the dashboard above the glove compartment and left of the steering wheel. On the center console, cupholders are sunk at the bottom of a larger open cubby, making it easy to hold a snack bag beside a beverage. Center console and door panel bins add more options. There’s another space below the HVAC control panel, which houses the wireless charging pad in models equipped with one, like the Prime. Its shape and size makes it simple to just toss your phone in there to start charging, rather than futz about aligning it with the pad. Toyota’s latest infotainment system responds quickly and is fairly user-friendly, once you get past the absence of a home button. The aforementioned Premium Package also adds a 360-degree camera with excellent resolution and color, which can be toggled to views focused on the curb or ahead of the vehicle. Higher-end RAV4 models like the Prime XSE get an 11-speaker JBL premium audio system, which sounds fine but is hardly a reason to upgrade. Most RAV4 trim levels have five USB charge ports: three up front, and two in the second row. Larger air vents would contribute to the cabin’s chunky aesthetic, and allow for more airflow. Nevertheless, back-seat passengers get their own air vents on the rear of the center console, a feature not all compact crossovers provide. Likewise, all four window switches have one-touch up/down functionality. TOYOTA RAV4 PRIME INTERIOR: ANY GOOD? Let’s again make it clear that you should get the RAV4 Prime for its plug-in hybrid capabilities, not because its interior is nicer, higher-tech, or more user-friendly than any other RAV4 model. Regardless of specification, the RAV4’s interior looks good and functions well. Slightly higher material quality and softer seat padding would benefit comfort, but those attributes are at least comparable to other small SUVs. As it is, the Toyota RAV4’s interior combines design and practicality to benefit daily drives or weekend adventures.
