Magazine PHYSICAL SECURITY’S DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION WHY MORE AND MORE COMPANIES ARE EMBRACING INTEGRATED SECURITY PLATFORMS—AND DISCOVERING ADDED BENEFITS ALONG THE WAY. FacebookTwitterLinkedIn Paul Boehme is no stranger to frantic calls at 2 a.m. Boehme is the senior portfolio manager for corporate real estate and enterprise services for Deluxe Corporation, a Minneapolis-based payments and business technology company that provides platform services, solutions and technology for 4,000 financial institutions and 4.5 million small businesses. If there is a potential break-in or another safety issue at one of Deluxe’s 60 U.S. facilities, Boehme is the person who is alerted—day or night. In the past, figuring out whether an alarm was due to an attempted robbery or custodial staff going through the wrong door required many tedious hours poring over video security footage. Today, however, Boehme receives a text with a link to the precise footage related to the incident, so he can determine in an instant whether any action needs to be taken. That simple but critical ability signifies more than just an improvement in video technology. Organizations like Deluxe are increasingly turning to cloud-based platforms to fundamentally overhaul their physical security, utilizing integrated systems and groundbreaking functionality to dynamically respond to the daily demands of their businesses. BEYOND VIDEO SECURITY Deluxe adopted this new technology just over a year ago, replacing its “rudimentary and outdated” disparate security system with a cloud-based physical security platform from Verkada. Verkada’s six product lines—video security cameras, door-based access control, environmental sensors, alarms, guest management, and mailroom management—all integrate into a single software interface. Brandon Davito, vice president of product and operations for Verkada, says the ability to tie these systems together can expand video security systems beyond their typical uses of identifying intruders and deterring theft. The Verkada platform, he notes, gives companies the ability to look more holistically at their physical spaces to solve existing or emerging issues. For example, schools are now using sensor data to determine whether smoking or vaping is occurring in places like restrooms, where security cameras can’t be placed. “When cameras outside the restrooms are integrated with sensors, administrators have a noninvasive way to monitor the situation,” Davito says. “We are seeing a real change where executives are saying, ‘Don’t just show me a bunch of cameras. Show me what those cameras can do for my business.’” — Mike Jude, Research Director, Cybersecurity Products Group, International Data Corporation With features such as proactive security alerts and artificial intelligence-based video analytics, Deluxe is testing this technology to aid in monitoring the vehicle and foot traffic into and out of its buildings. “It’s a great tool for us to understand what vehicles are going in and out of our parking lot, and to identify if there are individuals in an area that shouldn’t be there,” Boehme says. EMBRACING INTEGRATION Mike Jude, research director for the Cybersecurity Products Group at International Data Corporation (IDC), says companies are beginning to catch on to the many benefits of a cloud-based, integrated security platform. In previous years of IDC’s survey of the U.S. physical security technology market, almost no respondents said they had any kind of comprehensive plan for their video security technology. This year, a whopping 50% say they do. “We are seeing a real change where CEOs, CFOs and other high-level executives are saying, ‘Don’t just show me a bunch of cameras. Show me what those cameras can do for my business,’” Jude explains. While Boehme is excited about the expanding uses of security equipment, he is equally happy about the efficiencies and cost savings of an integrated, cloud-based platform. Previously, Deluxe relied on three different “point systems”—siloed solutions or products that address only one particular security need—for their access control, video surveillance and intrusion management. Those point systems, each from a different manufacturer, required support from more than a dozen vendors and service providers. The equipment was outdated. If an antiquated digital video recorder (DVR) system malfunctioned, half a dozen other cameras could go down with it. Chores like patching software and training employees to use the various systems brought lots of hidden costs. “It was a breath of fresh air to have a single source for access control, video surveillance and intrusion management,” Boehme says. THE VALUE OF PEACE OF MIND Jude, the IDC analyst, says companies can be seduced by the low upfront cost of point security solutions, even though those solutions have a narrower scope. “But then they realize that every time one of the siloed solutions needs to be updated, all the other equipment that interacts with that solution needs to be updated, too,” he says. “IT departments tend to understand the cost and effort of supporting point solutions, but facilities departments—often less versed in managing software and hardware than IT—can be a little less clear on the benefits of integrated systems that are easier to install and maintain.” The IDC survey indicates that realization is growing, however. About half of the respondents say they plan to upgrade their physical and video security technology to better integrated systems, like Verkada, that are more technologically advanced. Boehme of Deluxe needs no convincing that siloed point solutions are passé. After putting the Verkada platform in place, Boehme estimates the total cost of the equipment per facility dropped 20%, bringing immediate savings and making capital forecasting easier. And no longer having to scramble to deal with false alerts at 2 in the morning “has certainly reduced the number of gray hairs in my beard,” he says. “I don’t know if you can even put a price on that.” Custom Content from WSJ is a unit of The Wall Street Journal Advertising Department.
