LOOKING OUT THE REAR VIEW MIRROR...

Our founder was a contractor for 30 years. And he faced a common challenge in
the construction industry: management of his company using traditional financial
reports or statements (stuff from a CFO/CPA) he felt like he was trying to drive
a car by looking in the rearview mirror.

 

Despite the hard work and every project turning a profit of some sort, the
financial reports showed a different picture —usually less profit and at times
an unexpected loss.

 

This disconnect from what he saw from a CFO/CPA was a wake-up call. He felt he
needed to understand better why there was a disconnect, and if there was a way
to see what was happening in real time so he could take action while there was
still time.




SPREADSHEETS DIDN'T WORK 

So he tried to use spreadsheets to fix this problem.

 

Spreadsheets didn’t solve the problem mainly

because data came from multiple sources throughout the company and could not be
kept up in real time.

 

The information was fragmented (some spreadsheets had certain information but
not all of it and another contained that additional information but they were
not in one place) so, upkeep was not easy.



Management reports

Like many contractors, he used a variety of paper ledger and manual systems to
keep track of its job scheduling, resource allocation, and other key factors
necessary to manage the business and forecast profits.

 

Although the spreadsheet system worked, it was confusing and prone to human
error because of the need to continually enter and re-enter information to keep
it updated.

 

Furthermore, in order to create reports for analysis, all information had to be
compiled from each system in order to get a complete picture of the business.

 

Knowing there had to be a better way, he set out to develop a complete
information management system that would streamline operations, clarify
organizational goals, and make information easily and instantly available for
reporting and decision-making.


ONE CENTRAL DATABASE

So what he needed was a central location where users could enter project data
once and that data was accessible to everybody for forecasting revenue and
profit, project analytics, project profit trending and it was easy to use.

 

Basically he wanted a revenue and profit management tool that was as good as the
project management, financial and scheduling software that contractors use
today.

 

Command Post is that tool. It’s for the revenue and profit analytics management
