Captain Jarvis McCall sat hunched over the control deck, his grey eyes focused on the hexagonal view screen. His second-in-command, Erika Vaughn, stood behind him, her gaze darting between Jarvis and the gloomy readouts. "Fuel's as thin as piss on a hot rock, Jarvis," Erika warned, her tone carrying a hint of apprehension. "At this rate, we'll be marooned in the middle of the abyss before we even touch Veridian's soil." Jarvis remained silent, a scowl deepening on his weathered face as he delicately adjusted a lever. "We've been in tighter spots before." His voice crackled with an authenticity that grew from a lifetime of hard-learned lessons on the cosmos' dispassionate silence. The deafening hum of the engines seemed to intensify, echoing in the cold metal insides of the spacecraft. The grim layout of drab control panels, each adorned with buttons and switches, hinted at the many stories of survival, loss, and narrow escapes imprinted on the ship's heart. Erika shifted uncomfortably, her eyes focusing on the cosmic void dancing outside the screen. Taking a deep breath, she ventured once more, "Maybe this time, we're not getting away. Maybe the universe has gambled enough with us." By way of reply, Jarvis punched the thrusters into high gear. His hands steady on the ship's controls, he looked back at Erika and smiled bleakly. "In space, Erika, the House always loses." Edit Delete WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Submit Share
