OPTIMISATION OUTSHINES INNOVATION AT RECENT GUADALAJARA SOLAR EXPO

Prioritising small efficiency gains over spectacular transformation appeared to
be the order of the day at the Solar + Storage Mexico expo.

Bright prospects: Enhanced solar panels delivering distinct energy dividend.

Although solar storage technology has advanced rapidly over recent years, with
performance increasing and costs falling, established technologies are beginning
to plateau and improvements are becoming increasingly hard to find. As a result,
the focus for many exhibitors at the Solar + Storage Mexico show was on
maximising efficiency, rather than stampeding towards the next technical
breakthrough.

This was clearly the approach advocated by Thais Bitencourt, Latin‑America
Marketing Manager for Hefei‑headquartered DAH Solar. Looking to promote her
company’s approach to increasing output from standard solar PV panels without
increasing their size, she said: “Our Full Screen product does away with the
sometimes bulky framing that typically surrounds the PV cells on a solar panel,
increasing the  working surface and upping the level of energy generation by as
much as 50%.”

Another exhibitor emphasising efficiency gains was Virginia‑headquartered
Fluence Energy. Having crossed the border to showcase the company’s AI‑driven
analysis and optimisation tools, Business Development Associate Octavio Phillips
said: “We examine months of data for renewable assets and then we unleash our AI
to find patterns in the behaviour of those assets and determine what is normal.
We can then begin to determine what are the events that fall outside of normal
operational parameters. This then provides the facility to be more proactive and
less reactive when outages arise.”

Overall, there was something of a split among energy storage exhibitors at the
event, largely between those showing older and cheaper lead‑acid cells and those
promoting newer lithium battery technologies. Highlighting the differences, Juan
Felipe Sarmiento, a Sales Engineer with the Shanghai‑based Pytes Group, said:
“Basically, lithium batteries last longer and work more efficiently as they age.

“By comparison, in the case of lead‑acid batteries, you only get 2,000 charging
and discharging cycles if you’re lucky and you can only discharge the battery at
30% of the DOD [depth of discharge]. With lithium batteries you have up to 6,000
cycles and you can discharge 90% of the DOD.”

With lead‑acid batteries having been in mass production for well over a century,
the technology has reached peak development, leaving little room for technical
innovation. Despite being outperformed by more modern systems, there is still a
good market for such cells in the solar storage sector.

One exhibitor keen to attest to their continuing utility was Arturo Mena,
Latin‑America Business Development Manager for Nova Scotia‑headquartered Rolls
Battery Engineering. Outlining the role now played by such batteries, he said:
“As a company, we started in the marine and railroad fields. While we still
provide marine and railroad batteries, they are very stagnant very low‑volume
markets. Our growth is now coming via solar energy storage applications and
multi‑power applications, such as golf carts, elevators and forklifts.”

Many at the event saw Mexico as a less attractive market than several other
territories due to the lack of government‑backed financial support packages.
Mena, however, was far from alone in asserting it was a prime market for his
business.

Expanding upon this, he said: “Mexico is by far our largest market and that’s
down to a number of different factors. It’s partly the growing economy and
partly because it’s so easy to send shipments by truck. The currency has helped
too, because it has appreciated and that makes us, with our Canadian dollars,
more competitive.”

The 2024 edition of Solar + Storage Mexico took place from 17-19 April at Expo
Guadalajara.
