THE IMU IS AN INTERNATIONAL NON-GOVERNMENTAL AND NON-PROFIT SCIENTIFIC
ORGANIZATION. IMU'S OBJECTIVES ARE:

To promote international cooperation in mathematics.

To support and assist the International Congress of Mathematicians and other
international scientific meetings or conferences.

To encourage and support other international mathematical activities considered
likely to contribute to the development of mathematical science in any of its
aspects, pure, applied, or educational.

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF MATHEMATICIANS (ICM) | 6–14 JULY 2022

19TH IMU GENERAL ASSEMBLY | 3–4 JULY 2022

Registration for the virtual ICM 2022 has now reached capacity. There are no
further places available. Please note that all lectures will be recorded during
the ICM, and they will be made available right after the congress on the YouTube
channel of the IMU. Further details will follow.

At meetings held over 24-27 February 2022, the Executive Committee of the
International Mathematical Union (IMU) decided that the the International
Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2022 and the 19th IMU General Assembly (GA)
would not take place in Saint Petersburg, Russia as originally planned. The
decision was communicated to members in an official statement made on 26
February, with a further statement on 27 February clarifying aspects of the
decision.

On 11 March, it was announced that the 19th IMU General Assembly will now be
held on 3-4 July 2022 in Helsinki, Finland (Scandic Grand Marina & Marina
Congress Center), followed by the IMU Award Ceremony 2022 on 5 July 2022 (Aalto
University). It was also confirmed that ICM 2022 will be held as a virtual event
over 6-14 July 2022.

AD HOC COMMITTEE ON DIVERSITY

As announced to IMU members in AO CL 23/2020, the Executive Committee of the IMU
has created an ad hoc committee called the Committee on Diversity. Further

AD HOC COMMITTEE ON PERMISSIONS

The IMU Executive Committee has created an ad hoc Committee on Permissions (CoP)
to advise the IMU on a negotiating strategy regarding open access. Further
information is available here.

ABEL PRIZE LAUREATE 2022 ANNOUNCED

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has announced Dennis Parnell
Sullivan (Stony Brook University, USA, and the Graduate School and University
Center of the City University of New York, USA) as the recipient of the Abel
Prize for 2022.

ICM 2022 AND THE IMU GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On 11 March 2022, IMU Secretary General Helge Holden announced to IMU Members
via Circular Letter that the 19th IMU General Assembly will be held on 3-4 July
2022 in Helsinki, Finland, followed by the IMU Award Ceremony 2022 on 5 July
2022. As previously announced, it was confirmed that ICM 2022 will be held as a
virtual event over 6-14 July 2022.

RAMANUJAN PRIZE 2021 ANNOUNCED

The 2021 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing
Countries has been awarded to Professor Neena Gupta, a mathematician at the
Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, India.

THE SHAW PRIZE IN MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES 2021

The Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences 2021 has been awarded to Jean-Michel
Bismut, Emeritus Professor, Mathematics Department, Université Paris-Saclay,
France and Jeff Cheeger, Professor of Mathematics at the Courant Institute of
Mathematical Sciences, New York University, USA. Further details can be found

IMU EC MEETING 2021

The IMU EC held its annual meeting between March 19-21, 2021. The meeting was
hosted virtually for the first time due to travel restrictions resulting
from the COVID-19 pandemic.
