VILAFONTÉ
Founded in 1997, Vilafonté was the first American and South African joint
wine-making venture within the global wine community. This ground-breaking
founding partnership included a well-respected group of quality driven wine
specialists from South Africa and the United States. The 42ha property with its
unique ancient soils, called vilafontes, served as the fuse to their winemaking
vision. The defining character of the weathered soils formed the foundation for
the vineyard, designed by Dr Phil Freese (previous Opus One Head of Wine
Growing). High density planting, which is different by design, encourages
smaller vines, lower yields and highly concentrated fruit – a canvass for the
artistry to create wines of elegant complexity, structure and longevity.
Vilafonté Series M and Series C are exclusively from grapes grown on this
property. Vilafonté strives to encourage a philosophy of patience in the
cellaring and enjoyment of their wines.

Seriously Old Dirt 2021 displays a bright garnet-red colour. This Cabernet
Sauvignon lead blend initially greets with a vibrant expression of fruit.
Unfolding with fresh plum, black raspberry, mulberry and ripe strawberry. These
fruits are beautifully intertwined with subtle spicey notes of shaved nutmeg and
dried sage. Palate entry is smooth, luxuriously coating with a silky texture
from the fore-palate, broadening on the mid-palate and finishing with layered
richness. A line of fresh acidity adds energy to this medium bodied wine. Soft,
silky tannins are well integrated, allowing immediate enjoyment, while balanced
structure will allow gracious cellaring.

IN THE VINEYARD
Seriously Old Dirt was originally conceived in 2012, as a classic ‘second wine’
in the Bordeaux tradition. Named by Vilafonté co-founder Dr. Phil Freese paying
homage to some of the oldest soil in the world (seriously old dirt) that he had
come to understand existed in the Cape winelands of South Africa. The name
Vilafonté itself is derived from one of the oldest soils on our own vineyard
site. This ‘seriously old dirt’, by most accounts, originated around 800-650
million years ago, when the earth cracked-up at the foot of the nascent African
continent. As the Vilafonté team have gained in confidence, Seriously Old Dirt
has developed a stand-alone reputation and from 2016 we started exploring beyond
our borders to source vineyards and relationships which allow us to grow and
improve. Today, under the leadership of Seriously Old Dirt head winemaker Arlene
Mains, we continue our evolution. Seriously Old Dirt has become a multi-vineyard
and regionally-agnostic blend inspired by the original wines produced from our
Vilafonté site. We continue to explore new vineyards, sites & relationships that
embrace and express the ancient soils of South Africa.
