See Yourself in Cyber!
October is Cybersecurity Month, but TikTok works tirelessly to keep our users
safe every day. Over the past year, we've invested over $1.5 billion dollars in
protecting user data throughout the United States. Today, there are many roles
in cybersecurity that help safeguard users and strengthen the TikTok community –
just ask Meera, Max, and Ghelila. These three leaders in cybersecurity spoke
about what inspired them to pursue internet safety, the varied routes one can
take to enter the field, and of course, the strides they've made in securing
TikTok. Meera Dhami has worked on TikTok's United States Data Security team, or
USDS, for a year and a half. She is the Chief of Staff for the Security Office,
where she helps manage essential business operations, contributes to the
overarching strategic direction of the organization, and addresses national
security concerns with concrete, measurable solutions."I'm drawn to the constant
challenge of staying ahead of evolving threats," Dhami says. "As well as helping
the organization safeguard our digital environments." One of the things she
enjoys about her work at TikTok is the continuous opportunity to learn and
adapt. "Knowing that our work helps protect sensitive data and critical
infrastructure is highly motivating and rewarding."Max Moroz, who leads three
security engineering teams focused on threat detection and response, agrees.
"With each security review conducted, each vulnerability discovered and each
security mitigation applied, we get to make our platform more secure for users,
partners, customers, and employees," he says. "Our work has a very clear and
noble purpose." The goals of cybersecurity may be straightforward – vigilantly
protecting users' privacy – but there are many different paths to a career in
the field. According to the US Bureau of Labor, only 42% of people in the
cybersecurity field have bachelor degrees in the subject. The most important
thing to possess is a sense of curiosity. "My initial academic background in
neuroscience provided me with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of the
human brain," says Ghelila Mascio, a Program Manager for the Global Security
Organization (GSO), says. "This penchant for meticulous problem-solving and
critical thinking led me to software development." The past two years on the GSO
team, she says, her appreciation for the importance of protecting these digital
ecosystems – sometimes as delicate and complicated as the human mind – grew. "In
high school, I wanted to be a hacker – a good one, of course!" jokes Moroz. "To
do that, you have to stay sharp, keep learning, be open to new ideas – and those
skills are applicable in our work, too."Moroz, Maschio, and Dhami are part of a
large group of TikTok teammates who work to set the industry standard in data
protection. This past year, Mascio helped secure TikTok's presence at RSA, a
world-renowned cybersecurity conference where the company shared our work "as a
cybersecurity authority but also in attracting top talent". A major part of that
work includes Project Texas, one of the initiatives TikTok invested over a
billion dollars in (the other being Project Clover, which is committed to
storing European data locally at centers in Norway and Ireland)."We've spent two
years developing a framework to secure United States user data," says Dhami.
"There are mechanisms to ensure there is no backdoor access to data or systems,
and those mechanisms are under continuous review. Although the project is still
in progress, the strides the organization and company have made are undeniable.
It's the thing I'm most proud of." Moroz points to a strong culture of teamwork
and communication that allows projects like Project Texas to succeed. "The level
of trust, mutual understanding, and highest technical acumen is really the main
asset. I know it's cheesy, but the teams we've built here are our biggest
strength." "Cybersecurity is a dynamic and rewarding field that offers a wide
range of career opportunities," says Dhami. "This field offers a combination of
intellectual challenges, a sense of purpose, and the chance to make a real
impact on digital security." She stresses not to be intimidated if you've taken
a non-traditional path. "Leverage your distinct background to think creatively,
problem-solve uniquely, and approach security challenges from a different angle.
That can make all the difference."You can make a difference too. When you
#SeeYourselfInCyber, the possibilities to shape the security industry and your
career are limitless. Explore opportunities to make your mark at TikTok today.

Celebrating Latin Heritage at TikTok!
Happy Latin Heritage Month! Latin employees at TikTok represent a vast and
diverse group of people with backgrounds and roots in over twenty countries. We
spoke with Virginia, Lucy, and Gerardo about all the ways they bring their full
selves to work – as Latin people, as working parents, and as TikTok employees
who strive to inspire creativity and joy every day. "Growing up, I did not have
a network of Latina professionals to look to for career advice, mentorship and
support," says Lucy Salgado, a Partnerships Manager on the Global Business
Solutions team. "That's why it is important to me to help support any fellow
Latinas/Latinos, looking for professional advice." Salgado is able to do this as
one of the leaders of SOMOS, TikTok's employee resource group (ERG) dedicated to
embracing, celebrating, and advocating for Latin teammates at the company.
"SOMOS is forming a community that understands my experience, and has been on
the same path as me is invaluable."For Gerardo Orozco, a Client Solutions
Manager for financial services, who identifies as a "Mexican Dad", a career at
TikTok appealed to him due to the company's flat structure and openness to new
perspectives. "Titles shouldn't be the end goal," he says. "Being happy and
feeling fulfilled is more important to me than anything now. And working at
TikTok, I always feel comfortable sharing my opinion." Orozco adds that it is
empowering to be embraced by a team that "allows me to be my full self."As of
2021, just 8% of United States' employees in the tech industry identify as Latin
or Hispanic. Many people of color, women, and other minorities in an industry
that has historically been overwhelmingly white and male suffer from imposter
syndrome, or self-doubt that they "deserve" their role and accolades. This is
often due to not seeing people like themselves represented in similar positions
or fields of work."I always felt I had to work harder to prove I deserved to be
at every job I've ever had," Orozco says. It was challenging for him to overcome
people's expectations of what someone in financial services looked or dressed
like. "I have tattoos and wore my Jordans to the office," he says. "People would
look at me and assume I wasn't professional, but my style came from where I grew
up and that's how I'm comfortable. It was draining, until I found a home at
TikTok.""I understand how it feels to not quite be a part of one community or
the other," says Virginia Camacho, who says being raised by an immigrant family
in Nashville often made her feel like an outsider – "Not American but not quite
Mexican either. So I proudly serve both and try to serve my community and
provide representation through the little things here at TikTok." In addition to
being a member of SOMOS, Camacho, "[wears] my roots with pride, and participates
in conversations at the company that allow me to grow and provide my unique
perspective." Camacho, who works on the United States Data Security E-commerce
Governance team, came to TikTok because she wanted to create a positive impact
on technology for her daughter. "I wanted my daughter to see you can be a mother
and hold a career that provides value to your community," she says. "Policy and
risk minimization have always fascinated me, because we have the opportunity to
protect both the company and the consumer.""The experience of motherhood also
helped me foster qualities such as patience, adaptability and resilience, all of
which can be of value in the workplace," says Salgado. "Having open
communication and frequent collaboration with my team at TikTok helps maintain
work-life balance, while still achieving my professional goals."Above all,
TikTok strives to provide employees ample space to celebrate diverse cultures
and share their life experiences."When the opportunity comes, I want my son and
daughter to have the same chance as anyone in whatever industry they want to go
into," says Orozco. "By bringing my authentic Latino self to work every day, it
makes the world a more welcoming place through representation. Puro Orgullo
Mexicano!""At TikTok, I have had the opportunity to grow as a professional and
work with diverse and talented teams," Camacho adds. "We are at a moment where
our impact at TikTok can shift the direction of tech companies in social media
and E-Commerce for years to come. When you work here, you get to be a part of
something exciting, where you can provide intentional value every day – and you
get to be unapologetically yourself."When you begin a career at TikTok, you'll
work at a company that values your identity as much as your work. The
differences in cultures, backgrounds, and experiences we bring to the table lead
to new ideas and inspiration that's infinite. Explore career opportunities with
us today.

Innovation at TikTok!
TikTok is known for our rapid growth – as we like to say, we build fast
together. Not only does this mean we iterate our ideas quickly, but we're not
afraid to think outside the box and support each other when we do. There is so
much potential for growth as an individual and as a company. We're innovative
because our ideas come from everywhere and anywhere. "My first week here, I was
told, 'there's a place for everyone here at TikTok'," says Chelsea Alahakone, a
member of the Trust and Safety team. "I'm proud to say I see that value in
practice every day. My colleagues come from a variety of backgrounds and
therefore bring immeasurable value to the table with diverse perspectives,
approaches and solutions to the same problem. It's only from this melting pot of
new ideas that we are able to create and grow together."Creating and growing
together is the mission that drives everything we do. From day one of your
career journey, you will have TikTok leaders who are willing to invest time and
resources into all possible ideas – and the people behind them. Biannual
performance reviews and Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to help people set and
meet their ambitious goals.Employees who succeed at TikTok have a healthy
appetite for change and a willingness to step out of their comfort zones and ask
hard questions. For example, the Trust and Safety team works every day to keep
TikTok a safe platform for all users through content moderation, policy making,
and product management. When Alahakone was faced with an issue that resulted in
a user's concern not being addressed in a timely manner, she asked herself "why
do we have this process in the first place?" rather than simply "what in the
process is broken?" This reflects another one of TikTok's values, which we call
a "ByteStyle"; the drive to "Seek Truth and be Pragmatic." From Trust and Safety
employees like Chelsea, to Global Business Solutions teammates growing the
platform's revenue, to the Marketing & Comms groups telling the
ever-evolving story of TikTok, we don't believe in quick fixes, or doing
something a certain way simply because it's the way it has always been done.
"There is a constant aim to optimize our platform and our ways of working."If
you're interested in a career at TikTok, don't hesitate to apply! There are
limitless opportunities to do great work and inspire joy in yourself, in your
teammates, and in more than a billion users worldwide. Explore open positions

By the Numbers: How TikTok Has Grown!
We can't believe TikTok started way back in 2018! They grow up so fast. In
pursuit of our mission to inspire creativity and bring joy to all users, the
platform has grown in numerous ways – literally! Let's check out the numbers.
Today, TikTok has dozens of offices on six continents (maybe Antarctica, one
day...), and thousands of employees who work every day to build and innovate
industry firsts. We're making strides in Data Security, investing $1.5 billion
dollars in protecting US user and business data – and €1.2 billion euros to
create local European data storage in Dublin and Oslo. After all, when
businesses want to make an impact, they turn to TikTok. Around the world, small
businesses rely on TikTok. In Southeast Asia, more than 15 million independent
businesses use the platform to promote their work.In the United Kingdom, the
activity of small businesses on TikTok added over £1.6 billion to the country's
GDP last year. Over 55% of small business owners on TikTok are also ethnic
minorities, reflecting TikTok's commitment to creating a safe space for all, and
not just acknowledging diversity, but celebrating it. Three-quarters (75%) of
sellers said that TikTok positively impacted their ability to reach customers
across the UK. And there are a lot of potential customers. In Europe, TikTok has
over 100 million users – and North America celebrates just over 150 million!
We're so grateful for every user discovering the music, clothes, and people they
love on the platform. "It's been very inspiring to see how TikTok has elevated
education, community-building, and small businesses in particular," says
Jennifer Kim, a Talent Acquisition lead. "We're excited to continue helping them
thrive and connect with our diverse and vibrant TikTok audience."The efforts to
provide a safe and effective platform for buyers, creators, and all users would
not be possible without our dedicated teams working across a variety of
specialties. From Trust and Safety, who work hard to keep the platform safe and
inclusive to all, to TikTok LIVE, who created a space for the TikTok community
to experience culture together in real time, to countless others in the Legal,
Marketing, and Infrastructure teams, there are new roles to get involved and
create your own career in every field. Above all, there's one statistic that
sticks with us: 1 of every 2 users say that using TikTok makes them happy. For a
company that strives to inspire creativity and bring joy, making our community
feel happy is at the core of all we do. When you start a career at TikTok,
you're not only joining a company that's rapidly growing, but also improving the
lives of thousands of small business owners, creators, and users across the
globe. Our company has offices all around the world to best serve our diverse
and vibrant community – no matter where you are, you'll make meaningful impact.

Making TikTok Music Sing in Indonesia!
When people think TikTok, they think music. The platform has revolutionized the
way artists release their work and connect with listeners – a community of over
a billion music fans. With the Indonesian launch of TikTok Music, our new,
integrated service for streaming full versions of the songs you've discovered,
we're taking fans to the next level of listening. It's an exciting time for
music-lovers, and it's all made possible by the dedicated team building the
platform. We spoke to Tricia, Gale, and Matthew at the TikTok offices in Jakarta
about their innovative work making TikTok Music unique and exciting to
use."TikTok Music is effortless to use," says Tricia Dizon, the Country Group
Head of TikTok Music in Southeast Asia. "By being integrated with TikTok, if a
music fan hears a song they like in a video on the platform, they can press a
button and be instantly redirected to TikTok Music to listen to the full song.
It's a really fun, seamless way to discover music."The team growing TikTok Music
is as large and diverse as the platform's song collection. Some teammates come
from a tech background, but many have prior experience and rich connections with
the music industry."TikTok Music is very distinctive from other music platforms,
because we have a lot of unique voices involved in building it," says Gale Dewo,
a Product and Business Operations Lead on the team. "I encourage open
brainstorming sessions within the team to cultivate the best ideas. Our team
also explores other music services and offline events to understand what is
working and what isn't." This culture of open collaboration and curiosity helps
the team look past what other players in the industry do and branch out from the
way things have always been done. "For example, our user interface is very
distinctive from other music streaming interfaces." Dewo says. He describes an
experience that is purely TikTok – you swipe up to explore different songs,
personalized for your tastes, and even leave likes and comments on the music of
your favorite artists. "This is a very social-minded platform. In fact, some
musicians actually write back to connect with their beloved fans!" "It's
undeniable TikTok has completely changed the way people discover music," says
Matthew Tanaya, who leads Artist Promotions in Indonesia. He has first hand
experience in helping artists grow their audiences on the platform, and making
their catalogues accessible is a vital part of that process. "Once people
discover a song they love on TikTok, they want to consume it over and over
again. And now we have TikTok Music, a streaming platform where you can
immediately discover and enjoy the entire song."In addition to Indonesia, TikTok
Music has launched in Singapore, Mexico, Australia and Brazil, with ambitions
for many more countries in the future. Like Dewo, Tanaya empathsizes that this
growth would not be possible without a team that is plugged into what TikTok
users are looking for from their music and dedicated to finding the best way to
connect them with it. "We have editors on our team, programmers, library
members, we have people in label relations, and we all work together to tune in
(no pun intended) to what our audience wants." The team explored different
strategies to create engaging programs and promote artists to the right
audiences – and they're just getting started. If you're interested in joining the
TikTok Music team, Tanaya, Dewo, and Dizon all agree creativity and passion to
aim for new heights are vital qualities in any potential candidate. "By the
nature of the industry that we're in, things change so quickly," says Dizon.
"There's room for fresh ideas anywhere. TikTok never starts with
constraints.""Keeping an open mind is key. Don't limit your ideas from the
start." agrees Dewo. "This is a place where big, bold ideas can flourish."Does
the work of revolutionizing the music industry through a fresh new platform
strike a chord? Explore open positions on the team here.

Explore career opportunities with
us today.
