THANK YOU FOR SPARING YOUR TIME TO ATTEND ABP’S CENTENNIAL. WE ARE DEEPLY
GRATEFUL FOR YOUR PRESENCE.


THE OCCASION MIGHT LEAD SOME OF US TO MAHADEB’S TEASHOP ON PRAFULLA SARKAR
STREET, SOME TO THE PRESS CLUB IN DELHI, AND SOME TO THE HALLS OF PARLIAMENT. IN
EACH PLACE, WE MIGHT HEAR THE QUESTION: "WHO DOES ABP SERVE?" I WILL ATTEMPT AN

TWENTY FIVE YEARS LATER, ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA’S SILVER JUBILEE COINCIDED WITH THE
YEAR OF INDIA’S INDEPENDENCE. AN EDITORIAL CELEBRATED THE SUCCESS OF THE FREEDOM
MOVEMENT AND THE PAPER’S EMERGENCE AS ONE OF ITS LEADING VOICES13


BY 1972, THE CHALLENGE BEFORE THE INDIAN PRESS WAS SOON TO BE THE DEFENCE OF ITS
FREEDOM14. THE PAPER WAS AMONG THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST BY CIRCULATION15. DURING
HIS GOLDEN JUBILEE ADDRESS, ASOKE KUMAR SARKAR, THEN CHIEF EDITOR, SAID THE
PAPER HAD GROWN BECAUSE IT HAD SERVED ITS READERS, NOT THE POWERFUL16.


LATER, WHEN THE INSTITUTION CELEBRATED ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY, THE COLD WAR HAD
ENDED AND INDIA WAS REFORMING ITS ECONOMY171819. THE GROUP WAS NOW PUBLISHING
THE TELEGRAPH AND WAS TO FORAY INTO TELEVISION. THE THEN-CHIEF EDITOR, AVEEK
SARKAR, SAID THAT ANANDABAZAR’S ETHOS WAS ITS WILLINGNESS TO "QUESTION ANY
ESTABLISHMENT THAT SUBVERT[ED] VALUES FOR THE SAKE OF EXPEDIENCY"20. THE
PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL FREEDOM AND THE FREE MARKET WERE CENTRAL TO EDITORIAL
POLICY.


OVER THE PAST TWENTY FIVE YEARS, THE GROUP HAS VENTURED INTO NEW LANDS,
LANGUAGES AND FORMS. TODAY, ABP REACHES NEARLY 300 MILLION INDIANS EACH MONTH
FROM JAMMU TO KANYAKUMARI ACROSS TELEVISION, DIGITAL, PRINT AND RADIO21.


THE GROUP’S ENTERPRISE HAS BEEN MATCHED BY ITS HEROISM. I WILL CITE SIX EXAMPLES

IN SEPTEMBER 1999, A FIRE "ENGULF[ED]"23 THE ABP OFFICE IN CALCUTTA. BULU

EVEN FIRE COULD NOT BURN US. THE NEXT DAY, THE ENTIRE STAFF OF ANANDABAZAR
PATRIKA AND THE TELEGRAPH BROUGHT OUT THE PAPERS. ANANDABAZAR’S FRONT-PAGE
EDITORIAL SAID: "PURIYAO JAHA PORE NA"24.


IN SEPTEMBER 2006, A BOMB KEPT IN A TIFFIN BOX EXPLODED IN JHARGRAM WHEN THE
POLICE TRIED TO DEACTIVATE IT. SOUMESHWAR MONDAL WAS CRITICALLY WOUNDED WHEN HE
TRIED TO TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH. TWO YEARS LATER, WITH ONE EYE AND A RESILIENT
SPIRIT, HE WAS BACK ON HIS BIKE TAKING PICTURES.


IN JULY 2014, JAGWINDER SINGH PATIAL FLEW TO WAR-TORN IRAQ TO BREAK THE NEWS OF
THE KILLING OF 39 INDIAN HOSTAGES BY ISIS.


IN MAY 2020, THE CYCLONE AMPHAN HIT WEST BENGAL. AS WINDS REACHED 150 KM PER
HOUR, AND TREES AND ELECTRIC POLES FELL ALL AROUND, RUMA PAUL HELD HER GROUND
FOR TWO HOURS REPORTING ON THE RAVAGES OF THE STORM.


FACING THE SAME CYCLONE AND FAILED INTERNET LINES, RAHUL MAJI CONNECTED A LAPTOP
TO THE CCTV SERVER TO SEND THE PDF VERSION OF THE NEXT DAY’S PAPERS TO THE
PRINTING PRESS.


WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE MANY OTHER HEROES AMONG US. WE PAY HOMAGE TO THEM ALL.


OUR HEROES FACE A VERY DIFFERENT WORLD TODAY.


AMERICA IS NO LONGER25 THE WORLD’S POLICEMAN. CHINA HAS RISEN26 AND RUSSIA IS
BELLIGERENT27. GLOBAL TRADE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH HAVE DECLINED28 AND PRICES ARE
RISING RAPIDLY29. THE IDEALS OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY ARE IN RETREAT30. AS THE WORLD
MOVES TOWARDS A MULTIPOLAR ORDER, DELHI DREAMS31 OF A PLACE AMONG THE GREAT
POWERS.


BUT THIS DREAM IS CLOUDED BY THREATS WITHIN.


THE TASK OF ECONOMIC REFORM REMAINS INCOMPLETE32, AND THE PANDEMIC HAS CLAIMED
LIVES33 AND LIVELIHOODS34. THE CENTRE FOR MONITORING THE INDIAN ECONOMY FOUND
THAT, IN MAY, ONLY TWO-FIFTHS OF INDIANS AGED 15 YEARS OR OLDER WERE EMPLOYED OR
SEEKING JOBS35. THIS YEAR, OUR ECONOMY WILL GROW FAST ENOUGH TO CREATE 6 MILLION
NEW JOBS, WHERE IT NEEDS 10.5 MILLION36. OUR DEMOGRAPHIC DIVIDEND IS BECOMING
MORE DIFFICULT TO REAP.


SOCIAL DIVISIONS ARE GROWING37. THE POLITICS OF POLARISATION, PLAYED OUT THROUGH
SOCIAL MEDIA AND NEWS CHANNELS, HAS DEEPENED THE FISSURE OF RELIGION ON THE
STREET AND IN THE DRAWING ROOM.


THE ENVIRONMENT FOR NEWS MEDIA HAS ALSO SUFFERED A SEA CHANGE.


THE SPREAD OF THE INTERNET38 HAS CHANGED PUBLISHING IN A WAY NOT SEEN SINCE THE
INVENTION OF THE PRINTING PRESS39. THE MAN IN RURAL UTTAR PRADESH HAS THE WORLD
IN HIS SMARTPHONE.


HOWEVER, INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM OFTEN DRAWS IRE ON SOCIAL MEDIA40. IT ALSO MEETS
THE ANGER OF GOVERNMENTS41 AT STATE AND CENTRE, THE AUTHORITIES NOW MORE
SOPHISTICATED WITH THEIR USE OF LAW, TECHNOLOGY AND COMMERCE42, AND MORE
RUTHLESS IN THEIR PUNISHMENT OF CRITICISM43.


AS THE WORLD CHANGES, WE WILL STAY TRUE TO OURSELVES.


WE WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SOUND, INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM IN THE PUBLIC
INTEREST. THAT MEANS DOING OUR WORK ETHICALLY AND WITH RIGOUR. IT ALSO ENTAILS
HOLDING THE POWERFUL TO ACCOUNT, EVEN IN ADVERSITY.


WE ADVOCATE REALISM44 IN FOREIGN POLICY, OR THE SINGULAR PURSUIT OF THE NATIONAL
INTEREST IN AN ANARCHIC WORLD. THIS IS THE PATH THAT DELHI HAS FOLLOWED45 IN ITS
RESPONSE TO THE WAR IN UKRAINE. IT IS ALSO IN THE WORLD’S INTEREST THAT INDIA
RETAIN ITS RELATIONSHIPS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CONFLICT.


WE BELIEVE THAT THE TASK OF REFORM MUST BE RENEWED46 AND LONG-TERM GROWTH MUST
BE THE GOVERNMENT’S MAIN CONCERN. THE MCKINSEY GLOBAL INSTITUTE HAS ESTIMATED47
THAT THE INDIAN ECONOMY NEEDS TO GROW AT 8 TO 8.5 PER CENT TILL 2030 IN ORDER TO
EMPLOY ITS YOUNG JOBSEEKERS.


HOWEVER, REFORMS ALONE CANNOT ADDRESS THE MATERIAL STRAIN ON OUR CITIZENS. THE
RBI AND THE GOVERNMENT NEED TO REIN IN INFLATION48 AND THE POOR NEED A PROPER
SAFETY NET4950. PERSONAL FREEDOM REMAINS AS RELEVANT51 AS EVER. BUT WE ASPIRE TO
A LARGER IDEAL, WHICH THE CONSTITUTION CALLS "THE DIGNITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL"52.


WE BELIEVE THAT SOCIAL HARMONY IS NECESSARY FOR NATIONAL UNITY. POLARISATION
FETCHES EYEBALLS (SEE APPENDIX) AND PERHAPS HELPS53 WIN SOME ELECTIONS. BUT IT
DOES NOT MAKE THE COUNTRY STRONGER.


IN 1933, AS DICTATORS ROSE AND INDIA ACHED FOR INDEPENDENCE, RABINDRANATH GAVE
THE FOLLOWING ADVICE54 TO ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA.

আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকার আবির্ভাব নিয়ে কলকাতায় ‘ENGLISHMAN’ কাগজে চিন্তার বড় প্রশ্ন
তোলা হয়েছিল। ১৯২২এর ১৪ই মার্চ, ENGLISHMAN জানান যে কলকাতায় একটি নতুন দৈনিক
পত্রিকা শুরু হয়েছে। তার সমস্তটাই লাল কাগজে ছাপা। আনন্দবাজারের জন্মদিন আনন্দের
দিনই ছিল। মার্চ মাসে দোল পূর্ণিমার দিনে সম্পাদক প্রফুল্ল কুমার সরকারের পরিচালনায়
রক্ত বরণের কাগজে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়ে আলোচনা হয়। বিষয়বস্তুর মধ্যে ঝগড়া ঝাঁটি ছিল
না। শুধু ঘোষণা করা হয়েছিল যে, আনন্দবাজার পত্রিকা বাঙ্গালীর মিলন কেন্দ্র হবে।


যদিও ‘ENGLISHMAN’ এই রঙচঙে পত্রিকাকে ‘COLOUR LIKE A DANGER SIGNAL’ বলে বর্ণনা
করেছিলেন। তার মধ্যেও দেশের সমস্যাগুলি নিয়ে ভাবনার প্রয়োজনীয়তা স্বীকার করা
হয়েছিল। সেই চিন্তার প্রয়োজনীয়তা সত্যিই কম ছিল না। আজকে ১০০ বছর পূর্ণ হওয়ার দিনে
আমাদের ভাবতে হবে নতুন কোনো চিন্তা ভাবনার প্রয়োজন আরোও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কি না। ১৯২২এর
সময়ের সঙ্গে আজকের দিনের পার্থক্য খুবই বড় রকমের। দেশ স্বাধীন হয়েছে অনেকদিন হল।
স্বাধীনতার সময় আমাদের যে আশা ছিল তার অনেকটাই পূর্ণ হয়েছে এমনটা বলা যায়। কিন্তু
ঘাটতির মাপও কম নয়।


১৯২২এর সময়ে অনেক ভারতীয়কেই জেলে যেতে হয়েছিল। আমার নিজের আত্মীয়দের মধ্যেও
রাজনৈতিক কারণে জেল খাটতে হয়েছিল অনেককেই -- তাঁদের মধ্যে কিছু লোক আনন্দবাজারে এবং
হিন্দুস্তান স্ট্যান্ডার্ড-এ কাজ করতেন। আমার জীবনের প্রথম স্মৃতির মধ্যে খুব অল্প
বয়সে তাঁদের জেলে দেখতে যাওয়ার অভিজ্ঞতা বেশ বড় রকম ছিল। প্রধানত চল্লিশের দশকে।
আমি তখন তাঁদের প্রশ্ন করতাম যে, আইনগত অপরাধ ছাড়াই লোককে জেলে দেওয়া কী কোনোসময়
বন্ধ হবে না? তার উত্তরে শুনেছিলাম, দেশ স্বাধীন হওয়ার আগে বোধ হয় বিনা অপরাধে
কারাবাস বন্ধ করা যাবে না।


তারপর দেশ স্বাধীন হল। কারাগারের রূপ বদলালো। কিন্তু বিনা অপরাধে রাজনৈতিক কারাবাস
এখনও বড়রকম ভাবেই চলছে। সাহসী রাজনৈতিক চিন্তাভাবনা যারা চর্চা করছেন, তাঁদের
অনেককেই মার খেতে হচ্ছে সরকারের হাতে, আরোপিত অপরাধের বিচার ছাড়াই। তাঁদের প্রশংসা
ভারতবর্ষের বাইরে থেকে অনেক সময় আসে। যেমন, আমরা শুনেছি জোরগলায় অধ্যাপক চম্‌স্কীর
মুখ থেকে। বিনা বিচারে হাজতবাসী উমের খালেদকে সম্মান দিতে চম্‌স্কী চেয়েছেন। কিন্তু
এদেশে তাঁদের সম্মান প্রায়সময়ই বিরল। আনান্দবাজার পত্রিকা যে এই সাহসিকতাকে স্থান
দিয়েছে তাদের কাগজে এবং আলোচনায়, তার মধ্যে একটা বড় রকম মূল্যবোধ আমরা দেখতে পাই।


আমাদের দুঃখী দেশে সমস্যার অভাব নেই। দারিদ্র্য, চিকিৎসাহীনতা, সাধারণ মানুষের
সম্মানের অভাব, মেয়েদের প্রতি দুর্ব্যবহার - প্রায়ই আমাদের চোখে পরে। সেসমস্ত বিষয়ে
আনন্দবাজার যা বক্তব্য রেখেছেন সেই নিয়ে আমাদের চিন্তা করার কারণ আছে। এদেশে নতুন
যে সমস্যা আমাদের জাতীয় ঐক্য পিছিয়ে দিচ্ছে, তার মধ্যেও সুচিন্তার অভাব আমরা অনেক
সময় দেখতে পাই। ভারতীয় মানুষদের নানা ভাগে ভাগ করার প্রচেষ্টা এবং হিন্দু-মুসলমানের
সহকর্মের জায়গায় বিভেদ তৈরী করার প্রচেষ্টা আমাদের খুবই দেখতে হচ্ছে, রাজনৈতিক
সুবিধাবাদের ব্যবহারের জন্য। যে ভারতবর্ষ রবীন্দ্রনাথ, মহাত্মা গান্ধী, নেতাজী
সুভাষ চন্দ্র বসু চেয়েছিলেন তা সরিয়ে একপেশে সাম্প্রদায়িক রাজত্বি করার প্রচেষ্টা
দেশের মানুষকে নানাভাবে দূর্বল করছে। এই বিভক্তিকরণের বিরুদ্ধে যে আনন্দবাজার
দাঁড়াবার প্রচেষ্টা করেছেন - এতে আমাদের আনন্দ করার কারণ নিশ্চয় আছে।


যে আদর্শ লাল কাগজে দু’ পয়সা দামে দোলের পূর্ণিমার দিন প্রচারিত হয়েছিল, সে আদর্শের
মূল্য আজকেও কম নয়। আনন্দবাজারের ১০০ বছর পূর্তি উপলক্ষে এই বড় কথাটি আমাদের স্মরণ
করার অবকাশ আছে। ENGLISHMAN পত্রিকা যাকে ‘DANGER SIGNAL’ মনে করেছিলেন, তা নিয়ে
ন্যায়ের প্রচার প্রচেষ্টা এখনও জরুরী।


এ বিষয়ে সন্দেহ নেই যে, নানান দুঃখ দুর্দশার মধ্যে আমাদের এগোতে হবে। তাই
আনন্দহীনতা যেমন আমাদের কাম্য নয়, তেমনি সাবলীলভাবে আমাদের নানান সমস্যার সমাধান
বিষয়ে ভাববার প্রয়োজন খুবই বড়। শুধু সারল্য নিয়ে জীবনচিন্তায় সাফল্য হয়তো আমরা পাব
না। শক্তিমান এবং সুচিন্তিত চিন্তাধারার উপরে আমাদের জোর কমানো চলবে না। আনন্দবাজার
যে আমাদের এই বড় সত্যের দিকে নজর দেওয়ার প্রচেষ্টা করছেন তার জন্যে আমাদের
কৃতজ্ঞতার কারণ সত্যিই আছে।

FELICITATES THE BEST IN CONTEMPORARY WRITING. ITS BEGINNINGS CAN BE TRACED TO A
COMMENT MADE BY ANNADA SHANKAR RAY IN 1957, WHERE HE RUED THE ABSENCE OF AN
AWARD FELICITATING LITERATURE. THOSE PRESENT WHEN HE VOICED HIS CONCERNS
INCLUDED ASOKE KUMAR SARKAR AND TUSHAR KANTI GHOSH, WHO WERE SPURRED INTO
ACTION. FOUR ANNUAL AWARDS FOR THE BEST IN LITERATURE WERE IMMEDIATELY
INSTITUTED. ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA, HINDUSTHAN STANDARD AND DESH JOINTLY AWARDED
TWO OF THE AWARDS WHILE THE OTHER TWO WERE INSTITUTED BY AMRITABAZAR PATRIKA IN
ASSOCIATION WITH YUGANTAR.


ON APRIL 20, 1958, SEVEN POETS AND WRITERS WERE FELICITATED, IN AN EVENT MARKING
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA IN BENGALI LITERATURE. ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA AND DESH
JOINTLY GAVE AWAY TWO AWARDS CALLED 'ANANDA PURASHKAR' IN MEMORY OF PRAFULLA
KUMAR SARKAR AND SURESH CHANDRA MAJUMDAR, THE FOUNDERS OF ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA.
BIBHUTI BHUSHAN MUKHOPADHYAY AND SAMARESH BASU WERE THE FIRST AWARDEES.


IN 1960, PRAMATHANATH BISHI, THE AUTHOR OF KERI SAHEBER MUNSHI WAS BESTOWED THE
'PRAFULLA KUMAR SARKAR' AWARD.


CELEBRATING THE BIRTH CENTENARY OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE IN 1962, PULIN BEHARI SEN
WAS AWARDED THE 'SARALABALA SARKAR SMRITI PURASHKAR'.


IN 1972, TO COMMEMORATE 50 YEARS OF ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA, SPECIAL AWARDS WERE
GIVEN TO BUDDHADEVA BOSE, SANTOSH KUMAR GHOSH AND SAMARESH BASU. CELEBRATING THE
GOLDEN JUBILEE OF DESH MAGAZINE IN 1984, SUKUMAR SEN, SAGARMOY GHOSH AND BIMAL
MITRA RECEIVED THE 'ASOKE KUMAR SARKAR SMRITI ANANDA PURASHKAR'.
