They are usually small and shallow, and unlike cold sores, they are not contagious and they are not located on the outside area of the lips. However, they can be quite painful and annoying, and make eating or talking difficult. They usually go away in within a week or two. WHAT DO THEY LOOK AND FEEL LIKE? In the majority of cases, canker sores are round or oval shaped lesions with a white or yellowish center with a bright red border. They occur inside your mouth, which is why eating, brushing your teeth or talking can become a painful experience. Some people report feeling a burning or tingling sensation in the area a couple of days before the sores do appear. Canker sores have more than one type, but the most common ones include minor, major and herpetiform sores. * Minor Canker Sores: these are the most common of them all, and they are normally small, oval or round with a red edge and they heal without leaving a scar in about one or two weeks. * Major Canker Sores: these are larger and deeper than the minor canker sores, they can be round and have defined borders, however, if it too big, the edges can the irregular. They are extremely painful and can leave extensive scarring after they heal, which can take as long as six weeks. * Herpetiformcanker Sores: herpetiform canker sores are the least common of these three and they usually occur later in life, but despite the name, they are not caused by the herpes virus. They are very small, almost pinpoint and they form in clusters, going from ten to up to one hundred and they sometimes merge to form one large ulcer. They have irregular edges and they heal without leaving a scar within two weeks. WHAT CAUSES CANKER SORES? While the exact cause is still not clear, there are a few factors that researchers think can contribute to canker sore outbreaks. Some of these factors include: * Trauma to the tissues of the mouth, sometimes caused by dental work, sports accidents, brushing too hard or accidentally biting on your cheek, tongue or lip and tearing the tissue. * Some toothpastes and mouthwash that have sodium lauryl sulfate. * Food sensitivities, for example to chocolate, strawberries, coffee, nuts, eggs, cheese, spicy or acidic food. * Bad eating habits that doesn’t have enough amounts of certain nutrients, like vitamin B-12, zinc, iron or folic acid. * Hormonal changes. * A bacteria that is known to also cause peptic ulcers called Helicobacter pylori. They can also be one of many symptoms of certain diseases and conditions: * Celiac disease. * Inflammatory bowel diseases. * Behcet’s disease. * A defective immune system that attacks healthy cells and tissues in your mouth. * HIV/AIDS. TREATMENT For minor canker sores, treatment isn’t usually required. They normally heal on their own within a week or two. However, if the sore is too large and persistent or too painful, they might need medical care. Your dentist will prescribe a course of treatment depending on your case, and it can include mouth rinses that contain dexamethasone or lidocaine, topical products that you apply directly on the ulcer and in some cases oral medication. by Dental Care * Oral Care * Aphthous Ulcers * Canker Sore * Gums December 5, 2018 HOW TO GET GUM OUT OF HAIR Every long haired person’s nightmare: have a wad of gum stuck to your hair. How many of us had to go through the painful and endless clean-up to solve this “sticky” situation? How many have had to even go through the last-resort cutting of the hair? Insert background music of a horror movie. In reality it’s not just the person that has the gum stuck to their hair that suffers, also the one that has the task of saving the life of the victim is under a lot of stress. And as messy and nasty it is, it still happens sometimes, and it’s a good idea to know what to do before losing it and facing the scissors. Before knowing what to do, it’s good to know what not to do. The first and most important thing is to not try and pull the gum out with your fingers. This will make matters worse and you’ll end up spreading it even more. If you get gum on your hair, you need to try and isolate it from the rest of it, to avoid ending with an even bigger clump of gum-hair disaster. One way of doing this is by using aluminum foil. It’s easy to fold and put it in any shape you want, and it won’t stick to the gum and make an even bigger problem out of it. Once the rest of your hair is safe from the offending wad, you can proceed and try one of the methods we suggest. PEANUT BUTTER * Peanut butter will make the gum stiff, so you should scoop a generous amount and work it into the gum and hair that’s stuck to it, making sure that it’s completely coated in it. * Wait a few minutes and when you see that the gum has hardened a bit so that it’s less sticky. * Carefully remove the gum from the hair; you can try to brush it out with a comb or use your fingers. ICE CUBES * You can try to stiffen the gum with ice, it can even be almost frozen and it will break. * Take an ice cube and rub it on the gum for several minutes until it is hard, about 10 or 15 minutes. Once the gum breaks, then it should be easy to get rid of it. OIL * The American Academy of Dermatology recons it is very useful for gum in places like eyebrows or eyelashes. * Any oil will work just fine. It works by neutralizing the stickiness of the gum. * Apply the oil to the area and also on your fingers, work it into the gum and hair until it’s coated completely. * Wait for a few minutes and then start to gently work the gum out of the hair, either with your fingers or a comb. BAKING SODA * Make a paste in a bowl with baking soda and some water, it shouldn’t be very runny, you should be able to pick it up with your fingers and work it into the gum and hair. * The baking soda will stiffen the gum and make it easier to remove. These are just a few methods for removing gum from hair, there are many others you can try too, but these almost never fail. by Dental Care * Uncategorized * Chewing Gum * Gums * Hair December 5, 2018 COCONUT OIL FOR TEETH In the past few years, coconut oil has been earning a positive reputation in the health department. It has been linked with many benefits, one of which is weight loss. Another use that coconut oil has been getting is for dental health. Coconut oil attacks the harmful bacteria in your mouth. The claim is that it helps whiten and clean your teeth as well as being a good tool to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. WHAT IS COCONUT OIL? Before we go into the benefits of coconut oil for teeth and how to use it, first let’s clear up what it is and where it comes from. Coconut oil is an oil that is extracted from the meat in coconut, it is an edible oil and it is one of the richest sources of saturated fat. It can reduce plaque buildup, prevent tooth decay and fight gum disease. One the key features of coconut fat is its composition; it is made up almost completely of medium-chain triglycerides, also known as MCTs. These MCTs are different than other long chain fatty acids that are found in many other foods, starting in the way thy metabolized by our bodies, and also the potential health benefits it offers. Almost half of coconut oil is made up of a medium chain fatty acid called lauric acid; it is actually the best source for this acid as far as we know. Once it enters the body, it is broken down into a smaller chain called monolaurin; harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi can all be killed by monolaurin and lauric acid. It has been determined by researchers that lauric acid is the most effective at getting rid of these pathogens, as well as linking many of the health benefits of coconut oil to this compound directly. When it comes to the use of coconut oil for dental hygiene, the most common way to use it is by a procedure known as “oil pulling” or you can use a toothpaste with it. LAURIC ACID AND BACTERIA In regards to oral health, lauric acid has been very effective in killing bacteria that is responsible for things like tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. One of the bacteria that seem to suffer more with coconut oil is one called Streptococcus mutans, which is the leading bacteria that causes tooth decay. Gingivitis, which is the inflammation of gums, also known as gum disease, is caused mostly by the accumulation of dental plaque which also carries harmful bacteria. It has been proven that coconut oil decreased the amount of plaque buildup and the symptoms and signs of gingivitis in a group of participants that suffered from gum disease. What was even more impressive, was that the decrease of plaque became noticeable after only 7 days of using coconut oil, and it continued to go down in the following 30 days. WHAT IS OIL PULLING AND HOW DO YOU DO IT? While oil pulling is a trend right now, it has been used for a very long time. It has been traced back to India for several thousand years. Oil pulling is basically swishing oil in your mouth for several minutes and spitting it out. So it’s really just using it like mouthwash. * Take a tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth. * Swish it around for 15 to 20 minutes, making sure that it goes everywhere, especially between teeth. * Spit it out into the toilet or trash, because it clogs up the pipes in the sink. * Brush your teeth. The fatty acids do most of the work here, since they trap the bacteria, so when you’re swishing the oil in your mouth you’re effectively removing bacteria and plaque from your mouth. by Dental Care * Oral Care * Gums * Teeth December 5, 2018 HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH Dental hygiene isn’t really that complicated, it only needs to be done daily. You only need to do it twice a day and it takes about two minutes, this will guarantee a healthy mouth. We have to brush our teeth because otherwise we would accumulate plaque, which is a film that contains bacteria that will coat your teeth and failure to remove it will contribute to developing gum disease and tooth decay. When we brush our teeth, it stops plaque from building up. It is recommended that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably when you wake up and right before you go to sleep. It also depends on each individual, since maybe someone has a particular condition that can require them to brush more often. It should take at least two minutes to brush your teeth, that way you guarantee that you’re cleaning every surface of the teeth. For some people that have dexterity problems, using an electric toothbrush is more comfortable and it makes it easier for them to reach all the areas, but in general, either manual or electric toothbrush will work just fine. What’s really important here is that the job is done properly. It’s a good idea to use a toothbrush with a small head and their bristles be in an angled arrangement, having both long and short bristles with round-ended bristles. The toothpaste you use is also very important, the right concentration of fluoride is to be considered. For adults, check that the toothpaste has at least 1,350 parts per million (ppm) fluoride. BRUSHING TECHNIQUE * First you should wet your toothbrush and apply a small amount of toothpaste to it. Ignore the commercial you watch on TV, that is an unnecessary amount of toothpaste. You should use a thin strip or small blob. * Start with your upper molars, pointing the bristles towards the gum line at a 45° angle when brushing the outside or inner surface (vestibular and palatine respectively). Use short, circular motions. * After about 20 seconds, roll the toothbrush away from the gum line so that it sweeps debris and plaque from the tooth. * Start moving towards the center of your mouth, using the same technique as you move along the areas of your teeth, and then continue to the other side until you finish in the molar section opposite to where you began. * Make sure you cover all the surfaces of your upper teeth before moving down, both inside and out. * Proceed with the same motions and order but now with the lower teeth, beginning with the molars on one side and moving along until you reach the opposite side. Again, remember to brush thoroughly all sides of the teeth and keeping a 45° angle with the bristles of the toothbrush. * It’s important to also brush the back surface of the front teeth, upper and lower. To do so, use the tip of the toothbrush head. * One area that we sometimes forget to clean properly is the tongue. It’s just as important to clean it as the teeth, since plaque and bacteria accumulate there too. Use a gentle, circular motion to brush your tongue * Rinse with water or mouthwash. * Smile! by Dental Care * Oral Care * Brushing * Teeth November 24, 2018 BEST DENTISTS IN PAYSON UTAH If you want the dentists that empowers you to love your smile and yourself, then take a look into this list where you can find the best dentist for taking care of your smile in nearby your location at Payson Utah.
