UNVEILING “DESIRE OF MY HEART”: A FAITH-FILLED JOURNEY | CHRISTIAN HISTORICAL
FICTION

March 29, 2024March 29, 2024 by Guest Blogger

Hi, Heidi Gray McGill here. As Julie Andrews once sang, the beginning is a very
good place to start. I agree, though you’ll find less Do-Re-Mi in my books and
more yee-haw. Although characters occasionally break out in song, it’s usually a
classic hymn you’ll recognize.

My Discerning God’s Best series takes you into the enchanting world of Shumard
Oak Bend in 1868, Missouri. Come romp over mountain fields with me (Bring your
own fabric curtain outfit) as I unveil the captivating tale of “Desire Of My
Heart,” the first book in my Christian Historical novel series.

Within the pages of this heartwarming story, I invite you to journey alongside
characters whose lives are intertwined with faith, love, and the divine hand of
God. As we explore the depths of their experiences, we’ll uncover the beauty of
trusting God’s perfect plan, even when it requires patience in the waiting.

Remember in The Sound of Music where Maria and the children eagerly await
Captain von Trapp’s return home after the Salzburg Folk Festival performance?
They are uncertain of his reaction, which builds anticipation and tension. Well,
you’ll have many gripping moments in Desire of My Heart. Have tissues handy.

Through the trials and triumphs of Rachel, a young orphan girl, and her brother
Charlie, you’ll witness firsthand the power of prayer and the reassurance that
God hears the whispers of our hearts, even amidst moments of silence. Their
journey serves as a poignant reminder of the profound truth that God is always
at work, even when His presence seems veiled.

In The Sound of Music, Maria prays for guidance and strength from God before
meeting the von Trapp family for the first time, reflecting her faith and inner
turmoil as she begins her role as their governess. Rachel, the main character in
my book, has about as much patience as Maria (played by Julie Andrews) and takes
matters into her own hands, not waiting for God to answer,

As we delve into the narrative, we’ll encounter themes of community and
compassion and the significance of extending kindness, empathy, and support to
those in society who are often overlooked, disadvantaged, or discriminated
against. Each character you meet will exude warmth and authenticity, leaving an
indelible mark on your soul with their genuine hospitality and unwavering love,
much like the von Trapp children left an indelible mark on Maria.

“Desire of My Heart” is not merely a story—it’s an invitation to embark on a
soul-stirring adventure, where every chapter unfolds with profound biblical
lessons and timeless truths. Allow yourself to be swept away by the magic of
Shumard Oak Bend as we discover together the depth of God’s boundless love.

Join me as we dive into this captivating journey that promises to inspire,
uplift, and leave you yearning for more. Let the pages of “Desire of My Heart”
guide you into the heart of God’s unfailing grace.

No matter how dark her night became, she knew God promised joy in the morning.

In the heart of 1858 Missouri, Rachel’s world is a whirlwind of uncertainty. But
amidst the darkness of her circumstances, she clings to the promise of joy that
God whispers to her soul.

Facing the grim reality of being sold off into marriage as she ages out of the
orphanage, Rachel refuses to accept her fate. With determination blazing in her
heart, she hatches a daring plan with her beloved brother to escape the cruel
grip of destiny.

Enter Melvin, a widower burdened with raising two young children alone.
Desperate for help, he sees a glimmer of hope in Rachel—a chance for a new
beginning through a marriage of convenience.

As God intertwines their lives, the five of them embark on a journey that
transcends the bounds of blood, forming an unlikely family bound by love,
resilience, and unwavering faith. Through trials and triumphs, they forge a home
where hope blooms even in the harshest of circumstances.

But just when they think they’ve found their slice of heaven on Earth, tragedy
strikes, threatening to shatter their newfound happiness. Yet, guided by the
light of God’s love and surrounded by a steadfast community, they rise from the
ashes stronger than ever before.

Rachel’s adventure unfolds against the backdrop of a tumultuous era, where every
twist and turn brings her closer to her heart’s desire. Yet, in her quest for
love, purpose, and security, she discovers that God’s plans far surpass her
wildest dreams.

Join Rachel on her breathtaking journey through the untamed landscapes of the
past, where love, faith, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow illuminate even
the darkest of nights.

WYOMING’S SHEEP QUEEN, LUCY MORRISON MOORE

March 27, 2024March 27, 2024 by Jeannie Watt

Lucy Fellows was born in 1857 in Placer County California to gold seeking
parents. At five years old, she traveled on a pack mule to Illinois, then back
to Virginia City, Montana and Bannock, Idaho, both gold producing areas. Her
parents then moved the family to Soda Springs, Idaho. Once there, Lucy’s father
started a freight hauling business.

Luther Morrison was a family friend who accompanied the Fellows family to Soda
Springs. He had traveled the Oregon trail at the age of 20 and served as an
Idaho Territory legislator and ran a sheep operation. Despite the age
difference–Luther was 44 and Lucy was 16 when they married–they had a great
partnership. Over the next nine years, they had three daughters and grew their
herd to 3,000 sheep.

The Morrisons moved to Wyoming Territory in 1881 with an infant, two very young
daughters and 2,000 sheep. They wintered in the South Pass area, and while the
family survived the brutal Wyoming winter, they lost all but 200 sheep. After
that year they established a winter range and summer range and began rebuilding
their bands.  They family, which eventually welcomed a boy, lived in a tent
banked with dirt for four years. Lucy didn’t see another white woman for over
five years, but she was a woman who enjoyed a nomadic life, and happily lived in
a sheep wagon during the summer months and eventually in the cabin that Luther
built during the winters.

Luther made the three-week roundtrip to Rawlings, 150 miles away, twice a year
for supplies, leaving Lucy at home to deal with the small children and sheep.
She was afraid of the Native Americans and when they would pass through the
area, she would dot her and the children’s faces with flour and say they had
smallpox. The Native Americans caught on after a number of bouts of “smallpox”,
and told Lucy, in English, that she was a smart woman. After that, they left her
alone.

Lucy was a Methodist and did not allow swearing or drinking in her home or in
the sheep camps. Her children were taught to read and write and the older
children went to private schools.

Luther died in 1898, leaving Lucy to run the sheep alone. At the time, she had
16 large bands of sheep, but halved the number in 1900. In 1902 she married one
of her shepherds, Curtis Moore, a man who didn’t drink or curse. She gifted him
a band of 1000 sheep, saying that it meant she married “a sheepman instead of a
penniless shepherd.”

Lucy was involved in the range wars between the sheep and cattlemen. Sheep
ranching boomed after 1897 and became Wyoming’s primary industry by 1910. There
was no system for leasing of land, and cattlemen believed that sheep were
ruining grazing by eating the grass too low to the ground. In 1897, Lucy’s
horses were shot. In 1904, her son, Lincoln was shot. He lived, and Lucy offered
a $3500 reward for the capture of the shooter. Eventually she hired a private
detective to find the man, who was apprehended in Montana ten years after the
shooting. The range wars continued and in 1909, three sheepmen were killed south
of Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Lucy feared for her life, but she continued running
sheep. By this time she was called The Sheep Queen of Wyoming by the locals, a
title she first thought was derisive, but eventually came to love.

Lucy might have been a nomad at times, but she also enjoyed the finer things in
life. She took her children to Europe, bought one of the first vehicles in
Wyoming,  and eventually allowed the oil industry to lease land for derricks.
She invested in land near Los Angeles and began to spend the winters in a
sunnier climate while her son looked after the sheep.

An author, Caroline Lockhart, spend the summer of 1919 with Lucy in the sheep
camps. She wrote a bestseller called The Fighting Shepherdess, loosely based on
Lucy’s life, which was made into a movie by MGM in 1920.

Lucy suffered a stroke in 1930 and died in 1932 in Casper, Wyoming. Her husband
sold the sheep operation and moved to California.

BOUNTY HUNTERS AND A GIVEAWAY!

March 26, 2024 by Kit Morgan

In my newest release, my heroine is the daughter of a deceased lawman who was
also a bounty hunter. In my story, he’s been a gun for hire, then a lawman, and
then a bounty hunter. He was also a famous sharpshoot in the civil war. But you
always stumble upon little tidbits after the book is done, and I happen to with
this one. For one, bounty hunters in the old west didn’t all look like Randolph
Scott. And two, my heroine’s father couldn’t have made a living as a bounty
hunter unless he was really good at it.

In fiction most bounty hunters are the rugged, independent (and handsome of
course) men we see  romanticized in movies and books. But this didn’t exactly
represent the majority of bounty hunters at the time. For one, most of them were
lawmen or employed by detective agencies and private companies like Wells Fargo.
In other words, they moonlighted as bounty hunters. Heck, my dad moonlighted
while he was still a homicide detective, and worked for the Oregon Racing
Commission on their security. Once he retired, they made him the chief of
security. But things were a little different in the old west.

To see how different, a study was done. Out of two hundred and fifty-five
gunfighters, only a small handful fit the typical bounty hunter depicted in the
movies, and even then, they only pursued bounties sporadically. The sad truth
was, most rewards were too puny to bother with and not offered often enough for
anyone to use as a consistent source of income.

Even so, there were men who became bounty hunters out of necessity, hoping to
supplement their meager wages as lawmen. Heck, even the  famous lawman Pat
Garrett collected a bounty for killing Billy the Kid. Others worked for banks or
train operators.

And among the small percentage of gunfighters that could be classified as true
“bounty hunters” because they managed to scratch out a living by getting rewards
on a consistent basis, it was no picnic to get your money. Pat Garrett may have
successfully captured Billy the Kid in 1881, but he had to really fight for the
five-hundred dollar reward from Governor Lew Wallace of New Mexico.

The governor had placed an ad offering the reward for the notorious outlaw’s
capture. But when Garrett  showed up to claim the bounty, Wallace tried to stiff
him, stating it was a “personal offer” that wasn’t binding on the territory
itself. But after persistent efforts from Garrett, he eventually received the
reward – though not before local citizens expressed their disgust by raising
eleven hundred dollars and sending it to Garrett.  I bet that upset the
governor, but at least someone was willing to pay poor Mr. Garrett  for his
trouble.

Have you read books or seen movies that have a bounty hunter as the hero? I’ve
got a bounty hunter in my stable of characters. Lucius Judrow from my book Love
is Blind.  My current book, Rescued by the Preacher only has the daughter of a
bounty hunter, but the hero is a spy for the president. Jules Monroe was a
preacher for all of a few months before he was recruited as a spy. Now he’s
stuck in Apple Blossom, in the Montana Territory, in a town full of quirky
characters. Sixteen of which are all clamoring to get married now that a
preacher is in town. But when a young woman stumbles into the church the day
he’s just finished his first sermon things get a little off track. He doesn’t
know who the woman is, but he’s determined to help her. Can Jules help a woman
who’s been attacked by outlaws, be undercover as the new town preacher, and
protect the person he was sent to warn that trouble was coming? It was a lot to
juggle, but hey, he can handle it. It’s why he was chosen for this mission. Now
if he could just keep himself from falling in love, he can wrap this all up in a
nice bundle and be on to the next mission. But darn if his blasted heart doesn’t
have other ideas!

I’m giving away one free e-book copy of Rescued by the Preacher to one lucky
commenter. Just tell me if you’ve ready any books or have seen a movie where
there hero was a bounty hunter.

COWGIRLS IN THE KITCHEN – JEANNIE WATT

March 25, 2024 by Jeannie Watt

Today I’m going to give you a recipe for one of my favorite flour-free,
five-ingredient cookies. In the early 1970s my mom, who is a fantastic baker,
was diagnosed with a wheat allergy. Ironically, we lived in wheat country—wheat
fields to the doorstep. At that time, alternative flours were rare. We had pea
flour (makes really bad cookies), corn flour (really grainy cookies) and not
much else in the grocery stores in Moscow, Idaho. We focused on candy after her
diagnosis, but every now and again we’d find a recipe for cookies that didn’t
call for flour. These cookies are delicate, but delicious. Here’s the recipe:

Flour-free Peanut Butter Cookies

1 cup creamy peanut butter (you can use chunky if you want)

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Chocolate chips are optional

Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix the peanut butter and sugar. Add the egg, salt and
vanilla. That’s it. You’re done, unless you want to add chocolate chips. I just
wing that.

I put parchment paper on the cookie sheets, then form 1 tablespoon size balls
and place them a couple inches apart. Use a fork to crisscross the cookies.

Bake for 10 minutes–no longer. You do not want to overbake. Let them cool
completely on a rack before trying to handle them.

If you want, you can melt chocolate chips and frost the cookies, or just eat
them as they are.

Pictured below are three varieties: chocolate chip peanut butter, chocolate
frosted peanut butter and plain peanut butter.

Again, these are delicate, but delicious. I hope you try them. They’d be perfect
to make with kids and grandkids.

Enjoy!

MORE CHANGES IN THE CORRAL

March 24, 2024 by Felicia Filly

We’re always sad when a filly who’s been here for a long time moves on, but
career changes happen. The Fillies had grown very attached to Julie Benson and
hated to see her leave. But her new five-book contract with Tule Publishing is
about Texas soldiers, not cowboys, so she felt it best not to stay. Please look
for her romances as they come out. We’ll be sure to shout it to the rooftops.
We’re so proud of her.

But that left one empty space in the corral and we’ve found an excellent author
– Sarah Lamb – to fill it. Miss Sarah is quickly learning the ropes and we’re
tickled to death to have her join us. She’s put her horse in the corral, and my
Jasper has taken a shine to the mustang already.

Miss Sarah is the wife of an amazing teacher and mom to two boys who are growing
up just a little too fast. Her day job is helping others to become writers,
while she squeezes in each spare moment she can on her own books. She spends her
days working and writing in the Blue Ridge Mountains and planning her next trip
to Disney World. Miss Sarah has written a slew of bestselling romances, both
historical and contemporary, thirty-four to be exact. We’re already finding her
a wonderful Filly to complete our little family. Her first blog is April 3rd,
and we’d love for you all to drop by and welcome her.

Her newest book is Alyssa’s Desperate Plan, Rejected Mail Order Brides #3,
available now.

March 24, 2024March 23, 2024 by Felicia Filly

Didn’t Miss Penny give us a fun weekend? I loved thinking about a job I’d do if
I’d lived in the Old West. I think I’d run a boarding house.

But now it’s time to DRAW a winner!

And the lucky person is………….

LOIS IMEL

Yippee! Congratulations! I’m doing a happy dance for you, Lois. Now watch for
Miss Penny’s email.

THE WILD WEST: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UNEXPECTED–PENNY ZELLER

March 22, 2024March 22, 2024 by Guest Blogger

Howdy, y’all! I’m so thrilled to be a guest on Petticoats & Pistols. Love’s
Promise, Book #4, in my Wyoming Sunrise Christian historical romance series,
releases this month. I cannot wait for you to meet Silas and Amaya.

We open the story with Amaya aboard a stagecoach with three other passengers.
Following an accident, outlaws bent on preying on helpless individuals decide to
commit a crime. Will dashing hero, Silas McFadden, come to the rescue?

Speaking of Silas, he’s a rugged and muscular rancher who sometimes rides with
the Poplar Springs posse, which includes his best friend from Dreams of the
Heart, Deputy John Mark Eliason.

Silas once spent time on the wrong side of the law. But God has a way of
changing hearts—Silas’s included. Christian historical romance is my favorite
genre to write. Of course, I couldn’t add in a bit of “western” flavor without
including law enforcement. So, while writing both Love’s Promise and Dreams of
the Heart, I researched Wild West lawmen.

This topic intrigues me, likely because since I was a young girl, my grandpa
told us stories about his time on the San Diego police force.

Below are some interesting tidbits about the Wild West—the good, the bad, and
the unexpected.

 * Some of the duties of Old West sheriffs included keeping the peace,
collecting taxes, issuing liquor licenses, keeping the streets clear of dead
   animals, and cleaning up manure.
   .
 * A Wyoming Territorial sheriff named Christopher Castle, along with his
deputies, noted the amount of money an outlaw had in his pocket when
arrested. Later, when a fine was assessed, it was that exact amount.
Apparently, he didn’t have any concerns about leaving criminals penniless.

In Love’s Promise, a stagecoach carrying the main female character, Amaya
Alvardo, is targeted by a gang of highwaymen looking for the strongbox. While
researching stagecoach robberies, I discovered some interesting information
about the cost of this lucrative crime.

According to my research, these robbers cost Wells Fargo & Co. an incredible
amount of money. J.B. Hume, a detective for Wells Fargo compiled records over
fourteen years (1870-1884), including how much the company lost due to those
bent on stealing from trains and stagecoaches. He included in his report a
variety of “expenses”—money taken in the heists, salaries of guards and agents,
attorney fees, reward money, and miscellaneous expenses.

 * In total for all of the categories listed above, $927,726.55 was taken from
Wells Fargo & Co. during this time period according to Hume’s 1885 report,
which was published in a Nevada newspaper.
   .
 * Further, J.B. Hume also reported the number of guards and passengers killed
and injured, the number of robbers killed while resisting the guards, and the
number hanged by citizens. In all, 33 lives were lost during these 14 years,
including four stagecoach drivers, four passengers, 16 highwaymen, and two
guards. Seven highwaymen were hanged by citizens for their crimes. Of note,
Arizona and New Mexico led the other states (which aren’t specified) in the
   number of hangings.

While Silas has his share of “Wild West adventures” in Love’s Promise, I daresay
he is content being a rancher and not dealing with outlaws and keeping streets
manure-free as is the case for John Mark in Dreams of the Heart.

Thank you for joining me today. As a special gift, be sure to snag An Unexpected
Arrival, a Wyoming Sunrise novelette, for free by going here.

Pretend for a moment you live in the Wild West in the 1800s. What is your
occupation? Leave me a comment for a chance to win a copy of Love’s Promise
(U.S. residents only, please).
