SEBULBA

A crafty, vicious Dug, Sebulba became one of the Outer Rim's most successful
Podracers. Whether roaming the streets of Mos Espa or piloting his massive
orange Podracer, Sebulba was aggressive and arrogant. He was not above
cheating to win a race, and would even resort to illegal weapons in an
attempt to defeat his opponents. Sebulba was Mos Espa's reigning Podrace
champion until he entered the Boonta Eve Classic, where he was defeated by
young Anakin Skywalker, much to the Dug's frustration.

HISTORY

The reigning champion of the Outer Rim podracing circuit, Sebulba was a Dug from
Malastare with a long list of podracing victories and a short temper. Between
races, he could be found in Mos Espa, holding court with his cronies and race
fans.

Sebulba was an expert pilot, but he was also a flagrant cheater. The Dug made
illegal modifications to his podracer, sabotaged his rivals’ machines, conspired
with lesser racers to defeat competitors, and was willing to injure or kill
anyone who got in his way during a race. Such ruthless tactics made him a fan
favorite.

At the Boonta Eve Classic, Sebulba got out to an early lead, ruthlessly
eliminating competitors. But Anakin Skywalker caught him near the finish line.
Sebulba lost control of his podracer and crashed while Anakin streaked on to
victory.

* While in Mos Espa, the unwary Jar Jar Binks ran afoul of a Dug in the
marketplace. Unfortunately for Jar Jar, this Dug was even more bad-tempered
than most members of his species – he was Sebulba, the arrogant, vicious
podracer pilot who was the reigning champion of the Outer Rim circuit.

* Anakin Skywalker intervened and saved Jar Jar, warning Sebulba that the
Gungan was an important outlander. Unimpressed, the Dug threatened Skywalker
as well, warning him that the next time they raced would be the end of the
young human slave.

* Sebulba’s ruthless tactics and showmanship made him a favorite of podracing
fans, who bet heavily on him before the Boonta Eve Classic. Sebulba prepared
for the race by enjoining the ministrations of two comely Twi’lek masseuses.

* Few podracing fans thought Skywalker had any chance of winning the Boonta Eve
Classic – podracing demanded lightning-fast reflexes beyond human
capabilities. But Sebulba took no chances, surreptitiously damaging the boy’s
homemade podracer before the starting gun.

* When the Boonta Eve Classic began, Sebulba immediately turned to the tactics
that had made him a champion, using his podracer’s massive split-X engines to
ram and shove aside smaller craft.

* Sebulba plowed into the Gran racer Mawhonic, knocking him off the course and
causing him to crash. It was only the beginning of his dirty dealings in the
race.

* The Dug used a hidden, illegal flamethrower to cook Clegg Holdfast’s engines,
destroying his pod, and hurled a piece of debris into the engines of Mars
Guo, causing him to crash in a massive fireball.

* Anakin stalled at the start of the race, but made up ground and challenged
Sebulba for the lead. The Dug rammed his podracer into Anakin, trying to
force the boy off the course. But Anakin hung tough – and Sebulba’s engine
couplings failed.

* The Dug’s podracer flew apart, leaving Sebulba to skid across the sands in
what was left of his craft. All he could do was curse as Anakin crossed the
finish line.

TATOOINE

Tatooine is harsh desert world orbiting twin suns in the galaxy’s Outer Rim.
In the days of the Empire and the Republic, many settlers scratched out a
living on moisture farms, while spaceport cities such as Mos Eisley and Mos
Espa served as home base for smugglers, criminals, and other rogues. Anakin
Skywalker and Luke Skywalker both once called Tatooine home, although across
the stars it was more widely known as a hive of scum and villainy ruled by
the crime boss Jabba the Hutt.

WATTO

Watto was a Toydarian junk dealer in Mos Espa who bought Shmi Skywalker and
her son Anakin from Gardulla the Hutt. An inveterate gambler, he sponsored
Anakin in several Podraces, but often bet against his own slave, who was
talented but inexperienced. Watto lost Anakin to Qui-Gon Jinn in a wager on
the Boonta Eve race. Years later, he sold Shmi to the moisture farmer Cliegg
Lars.

SEBULBA'S PODRACER

The Podrace champion Sebulba earned riches for his repeated wins in the
dangerous sport, and he invested most of them back into his beloved vehicle.
Sebulba's Podracer was an imposing giant, an orange-hued bully of a craft
whose pounding, thundering engine roar seemed powerful enough to knock down
opponents. Not content to rely solely on his own racing skills, Sebulba
outfitted his Podracer with a number of blatantly illegal surprises. A hidden
flamethrower could cook nearby opponents who dared to pass the Dug. The
massive split-X engines were strong enough for Sebulba to ram and muscle his
way past smaller Podracers.

ANAKIN SKYWALKER

Discovered as a slave on Tatooine by Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin
Skywalker had the potential to become one of the most powerful Jedi ever.
Some even believed he was the prophesied Chosen One who would bring balance
to the Force. Always pushing the limits of his Jedi training, seeking to
excel and live up to his reputation, Skywalker's passion often brought him
into conflict with his mentor, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. A hero of the
Clone Wars, Anakin was caring and compassionate, but suffered from a deep
fear of loss that would prove to be his downfall.

BOONTA EVE CLASSIC PODRACER PILOTS

The Boonta Eve Classic was the largest annual Podrace held on Tatooine,
hosted by the Hutts to commemorate the Boonta Eve holiday. Held just outside
Mos Espa, the Boonta race course started in the Mos Espa Grand Arena. The
formal race ceremony started with a parade of flag-bearers. Once the bearers
cleared the grid, the Podracers' massive engines would roar to life,
seemingly anxious at the chance to soar at speeds exceeding 700
kilometers-per-hour. Eighteen Podracers competed to win the trophy that day.
Anakin Skywalker survived to cross the finish line first, earning not only
accolades, but his freedom from slavery.

MOS ESPA

Mos Espa is one of few port cities on Tatooine. Domed buildings protect the
citizens against the glare of the twin suns and the scorching heat. Among the
dwellings, workspaces, and commercial operations of many bizarre kinds there
are also entertainment areas, including some of colossal scale. The famed Mos
Espa Grand Arena can hold an audience almost as large as the city's entire
population. In the time of the Republic, slavery persisted in Mos Espa,
though the despicable trade was outlawed elsewhere. The true powers in
control of Mos Espa were the Hutt gangsters, who found slavery a useful
institution.
