THESIS MILESTONES FOR SECOND YEAR MFAS

thesis chair, the other 299s should contribute directly to either the thesis
   project or thesis writing)

 * Thesis Project Goal / Clearly define prototype modules and begin to tackle
   them one by one

 * Thesis Writing Goal / Clarify thesis objectives in an Abstract and establish
an outline structure for the Written Thesis; Organize and write about case
studies and/or lit review from the summer and insert into the outline
   structure

 * Other Goals / Start the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process if
   recommended by the Thesis Committee.

The specifics of a project would determine the need and you can make some
initial determinations based on the information on the UC Davis IRB website:
Does My Project Need Review by the IRB. Your interview may very well be an
Exempt Research, but there is a worksheet on the Exempt Research page to
determine it. students are strongly recommended to call the helpline before
doing the course online and drafting a submission. In addition, funding sources
and some journal reviewers may ask about IRB approval, so it’s important
(especially for the former) to have written documentation. Ask for a formal
letter, even if your project is exempt from the process.

916-703-9158 or hs-irbeducation@ucdavis.edu

IRB Director, John Tupin: jdtupin@ucdavis.edu

Winter Quarter:

 * Courses / DES 226 (Studio Practice for Thesis) + two Electives or DES 299

start production work for your project

 * Thesis Writing Goal / Document all prototyping work as process work; insert
into the written thesis document as development unfold

Spring Quarter:

 * Courses / DES 227 (Thesis Exhibition & Critique) + Two DES 299D (Thesis
Exhibition Independent Study with thesis chair)

 * Thesis Project Goal / Complete what’s left of the production work early in
the quarter; Focus on exhibition design

 * Thesis Writing Goal / Work closely with your Thesis chair and committee to
   complete thesis writing

TAKING AN UNDERGRADUATE COURSE

Design grads should only take upper division undergrad classes, as they can get
elective credits for these.  They will be used toward fulfilling the degree
requirements, it doesn’t need to be graduate level work.  If someone wanted to
take lower division undergrad classes and were able to get it approved as a DES
299 class, they’d need special permission from the Instructor and a Variable
Unit Course contract filled out and signed by the Grad Chair, including what
their additional assignments would be to bring the level of the class to a 299.

TAKING A CLASS AT ANOTHER UC CAMPUS

Most students who want to enroll in a course at another UC campus will go
through our Intercampus Exchange Program application process, it is due 4 weeks
prior to the session starting at the other school just to ensure paper
processing/approval.  Here is the form:
https://grad.ucdavis.edu/resources/graduate-student-resources/academic-information-and-services/registration-and-enrollment

Students receive credit and tuition and fees are paid at the home campus.

THINKING ABOUT BEING AN ASSOCIATED INSTRUCTOR (AI)?

A good starting point for students who are interested in the AI role is Chapter
2 in our TA's Guide to Effective Teaching. This chapter provides an overview of
AI eligibility and responsibilities, as well as teaching considerations for AIs.

We aren't currently offering a training program specifically for AIs, but we do
offer a number of resources to help all graduate instructors strengthen their
pedagogical skills, including workshops and a graduate teaching community.
Additionally, our graduate student consultants are experienced TAs and AIs, and
they offer individual, confidential consultations to help graduate students meet
their teaching and learning goals. They would be happy to talk with your student
about professional development resources he might pursue.

DOUBLE GRADUATE DEGREES

Policy and General Recommendation from Grad Studies (As of February 1, 2021

Students may share up to 12 units from one UC Davis program with another,
provided they have approval of their graduate advisor and the Dean of Graduate
Studies. It is up to each of the programs what units can be shared.  The student
will still have separate candidacies to document.  We advise that it is best if
a grad advisor from each program talks through the coursework plan with the
student before he/she starts pursuing two programs.

Here is our petition as well for the student to complete if they have not done
so
already:https://grad.ucdavis.edu/sites/default/files/upload/users/gs301-graduate-petition-for-change.pdf

ARE THERE HOUSING RESOURCES?

1. UC Davis Housing--Grad/Professional Students group on Facebook — you need a
UC Davis email to log on, which makes it safer. Always seem to be options for
sublets.

2. Ecology Social listserv — people use this for literally everything, but there
are often housing options that come up. Again, pretty safe. Make sure you read
the rules! This list is full of Davis insiders and long-timers, so there are
opportunities here that you don’t see anywhere else.
