Whether it is Guided Meditations, Zazen, Mindfulness and or etc. Who is out there regularly meditating to treat their dissociation? While this thread isn't about those who actually became depersonalized through meditative techniques, all voices are welcome. I myself have a history with various techniques and it's been my number one go to for approaching this condition of existential hell. I will say however, that just as one who stirs their glass, causing the dirt to not settle, these kinds of practices have a tendency to in fact exacerbate symptoms. Though also the most "peaceful" days of my own DP/DR journey always center around whether or not I'm actively pursuing spirituality in general. Fortunately I don't have the episodes often enough anymore to call it routine. I often get a feeling of elevated anxiety/space cadet feeling from Zazen meditation. I guess it's worth it for the mental clarity. I only did that for extended periods of time, two hours, when there was a "master" giving sessions at a local yoga studio. It was a privilege to live in a place which had that. They didn't want money, false guru shit, nothing. They would ask for donations, and also had "retreats" that you would pay for. But the Center itself was kept unlocked around the clock and one could go use that space whenever they wanted. That's what I did, usually during mid day, they also had group meditations in the early morning and evening. Sometimes I'd take my friends at midnight and I would meditate while they slept on the cushions. Unfortunately, that said, the main Zen Master, who was married, had affair(s) with students, it was a big controversy. So they had to close it down, even though the Masters there were linked to a Respectable Lineage. Those days were my first 2ish years in DP/DR. But in a strange way those were very peaceful times. On good days, it feels like a reset button, and on tough ones, it's a bit like poking the bear, if you know what I mean. But overall, it's been a pretty essential part of my toolkit for navigating the mind maze. In addition, I am using the RedHealthWear PEMF Devices. They send automated pulsed electromagnetic fields to your body, aiming to trigger self-healing and self-regulation processes. I've been wearing mine for around three months now, and honestly, I've noticed I'm more energized and focused at work, and my sleep's been top-notch. I wear it all the time, and it complements my meditation practices perfectly. It gave me interesting experiences and I miss some of them but it didn't help with my DPDR. Also practicing in the evening, although it felt like it made me calmer, gave me nightmares in the middle of the night and insomnia. That center turned out to have many cult aspects and I left. It was also connected to and validated by respectable (tibetan) lineages. I don't think this meant anything in this case. A tibetan master who died recently here in France turned out to be an abuser, forcing "students" to wipe his butt (literally), beating them, tricking women to have sex with him and make it pass as a teaching (which seems to be a classic in Tibetan Buddhism). He was the most famous tibetan master un France and even welcomed celebrities. And after his death he was praised by the most respectable masters in Tibet, some who said that in the west students can't appreciate his qualities, or encouraging the thinking that he was in fact a great master who did those things just to wake students up, humbly sacrificing his reputation in the process. Which is a typical cult technique. So for me, being approved by a lineage doesn't mean much. I have also read quite racist things from some of these masters against people in western countries. I think we tend to idealize exotic stuff sometimes. We believe they have mastered the mind when actually a lot of them haven't even mastered their penis. Quite a mystery. Edit: I am not responding directly to anything here or assuming people's opinions, but I just want to put this information out whenever I have the chance to. Because I think people should be aware of some things so that fewer people will make the same mistake as I did. Trith and Peter are right. You might lean on some meditation practices or a church but I wouldn't call it a medical cure. Far as sexual abuse, it's common, and I assume it's more common in the more homegrown, cultish organizations. People definitely engage in exoticism and then become prey to somebody who doesn't care if what they're promoting is real. It happens all the time. If we try to protect gurus, Tibetian monks, or preists who are engaging in exploitation then we're actually weakening these institutions. You know, sitting in a certain posture, focusing on your breathing and thinking thoughts about whatever you believe meditating means. The only place any of that leads you is somewhere you believe it did. Thats “practiced meditation”, a projection of the mind no more transcendental than repeating one thing until everything else is drowned out. I’m not saying meditating isn’t real, but real meditation is not premeditated it’s improvised. It doesn’t have to be in yoga class or at some time separate from your daily routine of life either. “Alright I’m gonna go meditate for 45 minutes”. 🤦♂️. Your mind isn’t actually quiet when you sit there in yoga class and concentrate on it being so. “Techniques” and guides to meditation completely defeat the point, there’s no way for me to prove something like this to anyone but the truth is what it is. I think you are mistaken about my motivations. Nothing here shows that anyone is idealizing exotic stuff or meditation in particular, nor Buddhism in general. Thoughtsonfire pointed out that bad things happened in an organization although it was connected to a certain lineage, I think he was just pointing to a paradox and I didn't take it like he meant that being connected to some lineage was supposed to be a full proof guarantee. It's just that I was in that other organization for several years, I have wasted a lot of time and money there, and I want that experience to be useful to others other than a pure waste. So I am taking any opportunity to put some information out so that other people don't make the same mistake as I did. Nothing here shows that anyone in particular is going to make the same mistake. But I do know that many people could make it, because I have met several people who did idealize Buddhism in my life or online. So I believe there is a chance it could help anyone reading this. But discussing if meditation has helped anyone with dpdr symptoms is a good and relevant topic nonetheless, I agree with this. Also I don't think there is anything particularly religious in the practice itself. At least in its most common form.
