A BRIEF HISTORY OF LINDOS

Lindos (Λίνδος, in Greek) in its present form dates back to the 13th century BC,
when the settlement of Lindos was founded by the Dorians. The Acropolis was
built in 408 BC and served as a refuge for the people of Lindos during war and
difficult times. Possibly serving as an inspiration to later Greek builders,
some of the earliest preserved Hellenic architecture can be found here.

Above the historical aspect, Lindos is a very popular destination for the
visitors of Rhodes. From the beautiful small whitewashed houses dated to the
18th century, the cobble streets, and the fascinating beach of Lindos bay,
Lindos is a must visit when you are in Rhodes.

Apart from the beach, Lindos is a good location for many things to do nearby
from tasting the island cuisine, to visiting a romantic bar and many more.

THE LINDOS ACROPOLIS: AN ANCIENT WONDER

Perched atop a steep cliff on the island of Rhodes, the Acropolis of Lindos is
an architectural marvel of the Greek world.

On the top of the hill, above the town of Lindos, this ancient citadel is
surrounded by crystalline azure waters and offers a breathtaking panorama that
stretches as far as the eye can see.

The beauty of the Acropolis is enhanced by the presence of a Byzantine-era
Church within its compound, adding a touch of spiritual serenity to the
location.

THE TEMPLE OF ATHENA LINDIA

The Temple of Athena Lindia is one of the main attractions at the Acropolis.
Built in around 300 BC by the Greeks, it stands as a symbol of their culture and
civilization. The temple consists of 6 columns which are still standing up to
this day. It is one of the largest temples in the ancient Greek world.

The temple was used for religious ceremonies such as sacrifices, rituals and
festivals. The temple also served as an educational center. People came from all
over Greece to study philosophy, mathematics, astronomy and other subjects at
this great center of learning.

THE ROAD TO THE ACROPOLIS

The main road leading up to the Acropolis from the town of Lindos presents some
of the most picturesque views imaginable. The town, nestled snugly in a
beautiful bay, is located on a hillside that gradually ascends to the Acropolis
above.

As you journey along the winding path, you'll notice a collection of small,
traditional houses built during the 17th century, dotting the landscape. These
structures, with their white-washed exteriors and cobblestone pathways,
contribute to the town's unique charm.

As you continue your ascent, the town unfolds beneath you, a stunning tapestry
of history and natural beauty of Lindos and Rhodes.

There are many viewpoints along the route offering panoramic vistas of Lindos
and its beautiful bay, a sight that was admired by countless generations before
us. The experience culminates at the Acropolis perched on a craggy hilltop, a
testament to the grandeur of the past.
