OIL PRICES RISE ON PROSPECTS OF WIDER MIDEAST CONFLICT

Oct 220:55
October 2, 2024 20:55 HST

By

Gabrielle Ng and Georgina McCartney

Oil prices rose on Thursday as the prospect of a widening Middle East conflict
that could disrupt crude oil flows from the key exporting region overshadowed a
stronger global supply outlook.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 were up 94 cents, or 1.27%, to $74.84 a barrel at 0615
GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures CLc1 were up 99 cents, or 1.41%, to
$71.09.

Both benchmarks had jumped over $1 earlier in the session.

"Following the initial jitters from geopolitical risks in the Middle East, we
have seen some calm return to global markets, but of course, with market
participants still keeping a side-eye on any upcoming Israeli response," said
Yeap Jun Rong, a market strategist at IG.

"The question for oil now is whether Iran's energy infrastructure will be in
Israel's crosshairs," said Yeap.

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi militant group said it launched drone strikes on
Israel's financial capital, Tel Aviv.

"The operation achieved its goals successfully by the arrival of the drones
without being detected or shot down by the enemy," said Yahya Saree, the group's
military spokesperson on Thursday.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli authorities on the drone strikes.

AUSTRALIA: It has organised hundreds of airline seats for its citizens to leave
Lebanon and has flown military aircraft to Cyprus as part of a contingency plan.
The plan could include evacuation by sea, though authorities have urged an
estimated 15,000 citizens in Lebanon to leave while Beirut airport remains open.

UNITED KINGDOM: Britain has urged nationals to leave immediately. It has moved
about 700 troops to Cyprus, bolstering its military assets, including two Royal
Navy ships. It also has two military bases on the island. Britain chartered a
flight on Wednesday for its nationals, and additional charter flights are to
follow, diplomatic sources said.

THE NETHERLANDS

The Netherlands will send a military plane to repatriate nationals from Lebanon
with two flights on Oct 4 and 5, the Dutch Ministry of Defence said on
Wednesday. The flights to the military airbase in Eindhoven will also be
available for people from other countries if there is enough room to accommodate
them, it said.

Here are the details on contingency planning by other countries.

 * Australia has organised hundreds of airline seats for its citizens to leave
Lebanon, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Thursday.
 * Australia has secured 580 seats on flights departing on Thursday and Saturday
for citizens, permanent residents and their families who want to leave
   Lebanon: Wong
 * Some 1,700 Australians and their families have registered their desire to
leave Lebanon with the government, she said.
 * Australia is home to a large Lebanese diaspora and roughly 15,000 Australians
normally live in Lebanon, according to the foreign ministry.
 * "Please take whatever option is available to you. Now is not the time for you
to wait and see, now is the time to leave," Wong said.
 * The two flights which depart for Cyprus on Saturday are dependent on Beirut
   airport remaining open, Wong said.
 * "We are very worried about the situation escalating. If Beirut airport closes
the options for departing become even less," she said.

OIL RISES AS MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT DEEPENS, GAINS CAPPED BY GLOBAL SUPPLY OUTLOOK

Georgina McCartney

Oil prices ticked higher in early trade on Thursday as investors weighed the
escalating conflict in the Middle East and the potential for disruption to crude
flows, against an ample supply in global market.

Brent crude futures increased 64 cents, or 0.87%, to $74.54 a barrel as of 0006
GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 72 cents, or 1.03%, to
$70.82 a barrel.

But an unexpected build in U.S. crude inventories on Wednesday helped ease some
supply concerns and curbed oil price gains.

U.S. crude inventories rose by 3.9 million barrels to 417 million barrels in the
week ended Sept. 27, the Energy Information Administration said, compared with
analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.3-million-barrel draw.

"Swelling U.S. inventories added evidence that the market is well supplied and
can withstand any disruptions," ANZ analysts said in a note.

Some investors remained unfazed as global crude supplies have yet to be
disrupted by unrest in the key producing region, and spare OPEC capacity
tempered worries.

"After Iran's attack, prices may stay elevated or remain more volatile for a
little longer, but there's enough production, there's enough supply in the
world," chief executive officer of East Daley Analytics, Jim Simpson told
Reuters.

OPEC has enough spare oil capacity to compensate for a full loss of Iranian
supply if Israel knocks out that country's facilities.

However, traders worry that the producer group would struggle if Iran retaliated
by hitting installations of its Gulf neighbours.

"The effectively available spare capacity might be much lower if renewed attacks
on energy infrastructure on countries in the region happen," said Giovanni
Staunovo, analyst at UBS.

HARRIS ADVISER MEETS US MUSLIM, ARAB LEADERS ANGRY AT SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL

Oct 217:15
October 2, 2024 17:15 HST

By

Kanishka Singh and Andrea Shalal

A senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris met American Muslim and Arab
leaders on Wednesday as Harris' presidential campaign seeks to win back voters
angry at U.S. support for Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

Harris' national security adviser, Phil Gordan, told the community leaders in
the virtual meeting that the administration supports a ceasefire in Gaza,
diplomacy in Lebanon and stability in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, the vice
president's office said.

Ali Dagher, a Lebanese-American attorney and community leader, said the outreach
from Harris' office was not enough. "It's too little, too late," said Dagher,
who did not participate in the meeting.

Emgage, a Muslim American advocacy group, recently endorsed Harris, while others
have urged supporters to shun her. While they have not supported Trump, their
choice not to vote or to vote for third-party candidates could hurt Harris,
analysts say.

CHINA ON MIDDLE EAST CRISIS: CURRENT SITUATION 'HANGING BY A THREAD'

Oct 217:02

By
James Pomfret

FILE PHOTO: Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the UN at the U.N.
headquarters in New York City, August 13, 2024. REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz

China's permanent representative to the U.N., Fu Cong, said that it needed to
make clear and unequivocal demands to stop the cycle of violence.

Cong said this during a Security Council briefing on Wednesday.

"The Security Council bears the primary responsibility for the maintenance of
international peace and security," the official Xinhua news agency reported Fu
as saying.

Warning that the current situation is "hanging by a thread," Xinhua cited Fu as
saying that any "passive procrastination would be irresponsible, and any
rhetoric of condoning further military adventurism would send a wrong message".

Fu said the spreading Middle East conflict had already caused an unprecedented
humanitarian disaster, with Gaza having become a "hell on earth," and over 1.2
million people displaced in Lebanon.

China's Foreign Ministry has urged all parties and especially Israel to
immediately cool things down to prevent the situation getting out of control.
Beijing has also said it opposes any violation of Lebanon's sovereignty.
