In the interview, Detmering and Willenborg discuss key topics such as professional angst, the one-shot session, and generative AI literacy, and offer insights into the complexities of information literacy today. The title of their paper raises an important question about the role of librarians in addressing misinformation. Although information literacy is designed to empower students and individuals in critical thinking—an increasingly in-demand soft skill—it has also generated significant professional challenges for librarians. These challenges arise from the tension between their moral and professional commitment to advancing information literacy and the practical limitations of their working conditions. Many librarians face constraints such as the one-shot model of instruction which often limits the time available for in-depth discussions with students on misinformation and evaluation. Additionally, the expectations of faculty and immediate needs of students further complicate their efforts to address broader issues related to misinformation. Despite these challenges, several promising strategies have emerged. One approach is offering credit-bearing courses rather than relying solely on one-shot sessions. This model allows librarians to dedicate more time to teaching about the information ecosystem, misinformation, and critical evaluation. It also gives students more face-time with librarians which facilitates more meaningful and engaging discussions. Another strategy involves direct collaboration with other disciplines. Detmering and Willenborg highlight the value of partnering with fields such as psychology, sociology, and journalism. These disciplines offer different perspectives on misinformation which help librarians develop a more nuanced understanding and improve their instructional practices. Such interdisciplinary collaboration can also provide additional resources and support for addressing the complexities of misinformation. The interview also explores the broader question of whether librarians should be expected to resolve the misinformation crisis. While some advocate for focusing solely on teaching students “how to library,” this approach might be overly narrow. Instead, Detmering and Willenborg suggest finding a middle ground that balances ambitious goals with realistic objectives. Librarians should continue to stay informed about trends in misinformation and generative artificial intelligence. Although they might not need to take on every issue themselves, their expertise and support are crucial in helping students and faculty navigate these challenges. Detmering and Willenborg’s insights provide a comprehensive look at the challenges and opportunities associated with advancing information literacy. By recognizing the limitations of current instructional models and exploring collaborative and innovative approaches, librarians can continue to play a vital role in creating an informed and critical society. We’re excited for this update and hope you like it too! Start your search You’ll still start out with advanced search options and the ability to sign in to your individual EBSCO account. This account is free and optional, allowing you to save and organize materials in the EBSCO platform. Now on the left side, you’ll see My dashboard where you can create and access projects with saved searches and items. Just be sure to sign in first if you want to save your results. Filter your results Looking for filters on the results page? They’re now at the top under the search bar. You’ll have quick access to popular filters like Peer Reviewed, source type, and sort by date. For more filters, click on the first All filters button to activate a pop-up menu with all filtering options. Find the full text On a detailed record page, you can access the full text with the Access options button under the item information. You’ll either see a link to the PDF or an option to Check for full text using FindIt@UofL. This will take you to our library catalog where we may have the full text in another database, or you can request the item through Interlibrary Loan. You’ll still be able to save, cite, organize, and share items with options in the top right corner. Need help? Librarians are happy to help you navigate the new EBSCO interface and answer any questions you have about using EBSCO to find sources for your research. You can chat with us, email, or schedule an appointment with a librarian to meet in-person or online on our Ask a Librarian page. * UofL Libraries Win National Video AwardThis link opens in a new windowJun 11, 2024 University of Louisville Libraries recently won an award for their video promoting the Barry Bingham, Jr. Courier-Journal Photograph Collection. The video was created by communications specialist, Cecilia Durbin, to appeal to potential donors and share a small fraction of the images contained in the three million item collection. The video won in the 2024 ARLIES Film Festival’s category of Best Development/Fundraising Film. The film festival, part of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), was held during the 2024 ARL meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, in May. The festival highlights and shares multimedia projects developed by member institutions to increase knowledge and use of libraries. The recognition highlights University Libraries’ commitment to preserving and promoting valuable historical collections through innovative and engaging means. The Barry Bingham, Jr. Courier-Journal Photograph Collection includes a diverse assortment of images that document the rich history and culture of Louisville and beyond.
