MARKUS LANG

Principal Bass, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra


Bio

Since 2022, Markus Lang has held the position of Principal Bass at
the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Santtu-Matias Rouvali. His
musical journey extends beyond this role, with invitations to perform as Guest
Principal with orchestras across Europe, such as the Royal Stockholm
Philharmonic and the Oslo Philharmonic, as well as performing with the
Philadelphia Orchestra.



Markus has degrees from the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music,
studying with Hal Robinson, Joseph Conyers, Edgar Meyer, and Albert Laszlo.
 While at Juilliard, Markus was very active with historical performance practice
and toured Scandinavia and New Zealand with the school’s early music ensemble,
Juilliard 415. 



His versatility and interests extend to the realm of contemporary music, where
he explores compositions that showcase the diverse colors and capabilities of
the double bass. Markus recently released a performance of Kaija Saariaho's work
for Double Bass and Electronics, "Folia," on GSOPlay, to honor the late
composer.



Markus was born in Manhattan and grew up traveling between his childhood home in
New Jersey and his family’s summer cabin in Viitasaari, Finland. He has
dedicated several summers to prestigious festivals, including the Verbier
Festival, Music Academy of the West, and the Lucerne Festival Academy. Markus
has the privilege to play on a rare English double bass by George Panormo,
generously loaned to him by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
