VANDERLANDE’S FLOW SORT CONTROLLER SUPPORTED PEAK SEASON 2023

In 2019, Markus Ehrmann faced a difficult challenge when Vanderlande’s Flow Sort
Controller (FSC) system encountered issues at several of Amazon’s European
sites. The online retailer’s intense operational demands pushed the system to
its limits, and for a company obsessed with customer satisfaction, even the
smallest delays in service are unacceptable…

UNDERSTANDING AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM’S MAINTENANCE NEEDS

Once a distribution centre’s (DC) or fulfilment operation’s automated system is
in place, it’s in the best interest of facility managers, owners and operators
to keep it running reliably and at peak performance. That ensures both maximum
productivity and return on investment (ROI). However, in order to achieve
optimal uptime, it’s important to understand the facility’s expectations, and
plan the maintenance and service programme accordingly.

PASSENGER TERMINAL EXPO 2025

Vanderlande will be joining the Netherlands Pavillion at Future Travel
Experience (FTE) APEX Asia Expo, taking place at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and
Convention Centre in Singapore from 19 to 20 November 2024.

BONFIX

When BONFIX B.V. decided to build a new distribution centre, it chose
Vanderlande as its automation partner. The goods-to-person order fulfilment
solution FASTPICK is not only helping this family business to manage large
volumes of ever-growing orders quickly and efficiently – it’s also won over
employees by making their jobs more rewarding.

SEASON’S GREETINGS 2024

FROM CRISIS TO COMEBACK

With nearly 15 years’ experience at Vanderlande and a strong track record
working with Amazon since 2018, Colin Marnane had seen and overcome it all – or
so he thought. However, just four years into this partnership, was the
relationship with Amazon about to come to an abrupt end?

CONCRETE PROBLEMS, CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

With a career at Amazon spanning almost ten years, Michael Erhard has been
fortunate to work on nearly every one of the company’s European fulfillment
centers. Each project taught him something new, but one in particular stands out
as the most challenging…

VÁCLAV HAVEL AIRPORT PRAGUE

In 2019, Vanderlande began work on a major expansion and refurbishment of two
baggage handling systems (BHS) at Prague Airport. The goal was to help both
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 cope with increasing passengers numbers, as well as
bring the airport into compliance with ECAC Standard 3 screening regulations and
improve links between the terminals.

Join Michelle Borm, Bart de Rooij, and Matthijs Morshuis in this edition of our
Meet the Expert Vlog as they delve into the automatic storage and retrieval
system ADAPTO, our highly automated goods to person solution.

VANDERLANDE RECOGNISED AS A “CHALLENGER” IN PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE
SUSTAINABILITY

Vanderlande has been named as a runner-up in a prestigious award for a project
to remanufacture parts of a sortation solution widely used by the parcel
industry. The company received recognition as a Challenger for the “Top
Sustainability Initiative” at the Digital Engineering Awards 2024, which were
held in Dallas on 5 December.

THE RACE TO DELIVER AMAZON’S FIRST EUROPEAN ARS FULFILMENT CENTER

When it comes to working with Amazon, few people in Vanderlande have as much
experience as Stephan Gather, who was involved in the first collaboration back
in 1999. He was to need all that know-how when project managing “MAN1” in the
UK. The Manchester site was to become the first Amazon Robotics Sortable (ARS)
facility in Europe – and the job had to be turned around to a tight deadline.

VANDERLANDE REOPENS REVERSE LOGISTICS CENTRE TO DRIVE REUSE, REMANUFACTURING AND
RECYCLING

Vanderlande is proud to announce the reopening of its Reverse Logistics Centre
in Veghel, The Netherlands. The centre will help us take the next steps as we
maximise the value of returned materials by focusing on reuse, remanufacturing
and recycling.

AN “INTENTS” COLLABORATION WITH VANDERLANDE!

When the upper floor of a brand new Amazon fulfilment center needed to be water
blasted, Zofia Sobiech, her team and supplier Vanderlande had to think outside
the box – or should we say inside the tent – to protect the equipment below…

WEATHERING THE PERFECT STORM

When four major Amazon projects landed all at once – and three senior team
members unexpectedly resigned – Stephen Kramar, Director of Project Management,
found himself stepping into multiple roles, and rallying his team through one of
the most challenging periods of his career.

DEN5 – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE?

A Senior Site Manager at the time, Kevin Petrie was tasked with overseeing the
execution of a high-stakes project that would shape Amazon’s future in robotics.
However, when a key supplier announced a major delay, Kevin and his team would
have to accept the challenge of “mission impossible” to keep the project on
track.

FROM ARUBA TO AMAZON

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Anna Pereira faced a daunting new
challenge: relocating from Barcelona to Cincinnati to work on one of Amazon’s
largest air hub projects. With international borders closed to most travelers, a
direct flight wasn’t an option. The solution? A 14-day quarantine on the
tropical island of Aruba before flying on to the USA.

WE EVEN GAVE AMAZON THE KEYS TO OUR OFFICE!

In 2017, Remko van Gils was tasked with setting up Vanderlande’s branch in
Seattle, specifically to service Amazon’s needs and be close to the key
decision-makers. When it comes to managing projects, the company’s sense of
urgency and speed has always been unmatched, but would moving across the
Atlantic really add value to the relationship?

“WE TURNED A PROBLEM INTO A SUCCESS STORY”

In 2019, Markus Ehrmann faced a difficult challenge when Vanderlande’s Flow Sort
Controller (FSC) system encountered issues at several of Amazon’s European
sites. The online retailer’s intense operational demands pushed the system to
its limits, and for a company obsessed with customer satisfaction, even the
smallest delays in service are unacceptable…

“LIKE BUILDING A CAR – WHILE YOU’RE STILL DRIVING IT!”

Greg Tirevold had spent most of his decade-long career at Vanderlande working
with Amazon before one particular project would leave a lasting impact. In 2018
he was invited to Seattle to design a new robotic sortation facility. This would
put Greg in charge of a demanding schedule, far from home and for much longer
than expected…

AIR HUB NEGOTIATIONS HELP RELATIONSHIP TAKE FLIGHT

Having joined Vanderlande in 1996, Geert Visser has been witness to the
developing relationship with Amazon since the companies first joined forces.
While the initial projects were relatively small, a significant shift happened
when he entered a crucial negotiation over automating Amazon’s first air hub…

25 YEAR PARTNERSHIP AMAZON

Vanderlande and Amazon have enjoyed a robust 25-year partnership that has
significantly shaped the landscape of fulfillment and logistics. Over the past
quarter-century, Vanderlande has delivered numerous projects for Amazon’s
fulfillment network, primarily in Europe and the USA. These projects have
included the construction of Amazon Robotics Sortables (ARS) Fulfillment Centers
and Sort Centers, as well as the recent addition of Inbound Cross-Docking (IXD)
systems This long-standing collaboration is a testament to the commitment and
dedication of both companies to innovation and customer satisfaction. The
partnership has not only strengthened Vanderlande’s position as a key player in
the logistics industry […]

DELIVERING A FIRST SORT CENTER TO AMAZON’S EUROPEAN OPERATIONS

According to Sales Consultant Jos Peeters, sticking to tight deadlines and
working the Amazon way were essential when Vanderlande was delivering its first
high-capacity sortation system to Amazon’s European operations back in 2019. The
sort center in Berlin (BER8) would be handling 25,000 packages every hour, as
Amazon moved towards offering a next-day delivery service.

PLANNING IS CRITICAL FOR THE SUCCESSFUL INTEGRATION AND EXPANSION OF AUTOMATION

For companies looking to automate their warehousing, distribution, or
fulfillment operations, one of the first decisions to make is about the
building. Will automation be added into an existing operation? Or does new
greenfield construction make more sense? Regardless of the ultimate choice, it’s
critical to work through a comprehensive internal planning process.

EXPLORE THE ADVANTAGES OF GOODS-TO-PERSON AUTOMATION

With picking widely recognised as the most labour intensive—and costly—process
in a conventional, manual facility, deploying an automated solution can make a
significant impact on both. In particular, goods-to-person (GtP) automation
offers numerous advantages to those operations.

3 GOALS TO ACHIEVE WITH WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION

Warehouses and distribution centres considering automation do so for a variety
of reasons. But there are a handful of objectives that consistently rise to the
top when considering automated solutions. Learn more about the top 3 goals these
companies set out to achieve with warehouse automation.

5 REASONS TO AUTOMATE YOUR FULFILMENT OPERATIONS

Whether you’re a general merchandise omnichannel retailer, selling apparel and
accessories exclusively online or a grocer replenishing stores, you’re probably
thinking about automation if you’re currently fulfilling orders manually. The
dynamic changes in recent years demand unprecedented levels of agility and
resilience from retailers – levels that conventional, manual processes simply
cannot achieve. Here are 5 reasons why you should automate your fulfilment
operations.

CAN INDIVIDUAL CARRIER SYSTEMS BE A GOOD FIT FOR SMALLER AIRPORTS?

Over the past decade, the rapid increase in passenger traffic volumes and the
evolution of technology have made individual carrier systems (ICS) a more
popular proposition. Airports of all sizes are now showing interest in ICS
technology. This prompts a critical question: do ICS offer the same benefits
when implemented in smaller footprints?

processes.

THE FIRST OF MANY: ONE PROJECT THAT SPARKED A GLOBAL COLLABORATION

Thomas Blotzki is a Sales Director with Vanderlande, and for the past ten years
he has exclusively looked after Amazon’s needs in Europe and the rest of the
world, outside North America. That’s a huge amount of business these days, and
Thomas has worked on countless projects stretching back two decades. However, it
was somewhat different back in 1999, when he was asked to take care of
Vanderlande’s first project with Amazon in Europe: code name “Big River”.

KAPPAHL GROUP CHOOSES VANDERLANDE’S FASTPICK TO AUTOMATE NEW LOGISTICS CENTRE

Leading Nordic fashion retailer Kappahl Group has chosen Vanderlande to automate
a new logistics centre which will be located in the greater Gothenburg area in
Sweden. The two companies have signed a contract for the installation of
Vanderlande’s FASTPICK solution at the 34,000m2 facility, which is expected to
go live in June 2026.

FROM LOCKDOWNS TO LAUNCH, VANDERLANDE DELIVERED A FIRST FOR AMAZON IN AUSTRALIA

Fitting out Amazon’s first fully automated fulfillment center in Australia would
be challenge enough, but Vanderlande also had to carry out most of the work at
the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rumo de Schutter, Director Project
Management, reveals how a committed team and strong organizational skills got
the project over the line, helping Amazon to start building its automated
network down under.

BUILDING AMAZON’S AIR HUB THROUGH COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION

Tjabe van Es was Vanderlande’s Project Director when it undertook one of its
biggest projects for Amazon – designing and installing a sorting system in their
first air hub at Cincinnati International (CVG) Airport, Kentucky. In this blog,
Tjabe looks back on the challenges this presented both companies, and how they
worked together to ensure it was on time and budget.

configuration, this new solution marks a pivotal step in helping ASICS manage
its strong growth pathway. Handover is scheduled for April 2025.

VANDERLANDE DELIVERS ROBOT TECHNOLOGY TO DHL

DHL Express Madrid Hub has integrated a robot into its sorting process after
taking part in a successful pilot project with Vanderlande. The solution – known
as Robot Auto Induct – performed impressively in tests and is now fully
operational at DHL’s airport facility, where it helps to service the company’s
domestic and international parcel business.

JOINING FORCES WITH AMAZON TO DELIVER AUTOMATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Vanderlande is currently working with Amazon to provide automation at a new
fulfillment center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This is the first collaboration
between the two companies in the Middle East region, and one which is creating a
number of challenges and opportunities, as Vanderlande Sales Engineer Anique
Erens explains.

SOWING THE SEEDS OF SUCCESS WITH OUR FIRST CONTRACT IN THE USA

Vanderlande’s first contract with Amazon in the USA was for the supply and
installation of two sorters at an existing fulfillment center in Fernley,

FIRST-TIME WAREHOUSE AUTOMATION – A LIVE CUSTOMER INTERVIEW

Do you think that automation could be the way forward for your business? And if
so, are you wondering where to begin? These are some of the questions that we
address in this webinar.

SORTING SMALLS/FLYERS

SORTING REGULARS

SORTING IRREGULARS

AIRTRAX POCKET

AIRTRAX is an innovative and reliable family of products for transporting,
sorting, sequencing and storing hanging goods. It delivers unrivalled benefits
throughout any hanging goods handling operation.

VERTISORTER

The VERTISORTER is typically used as a pre-sort unit to split irregular parcels
or documents from a flow of regular parcels.

ANDREW MANSHIP APPOINTED AS VANDERLANDE’S NEXT CEO

Vanderlande is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Manship as its next
Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Andrew will take up the position on 1 January
2024, succeeding current CEO, Remo Brunschwiler, who has the intention to end
his executive management career on 31 December 2023 and thereafter transition to
non-executive management positions.

REGULAR EQUIPMENT INSPECTION

It’s crucial you safeguard the equipment that is integral to your operation –
and protect it from cybersecurity threats. Regular inspections are peace of mind
that your systems are performing at their best.

UNLOAD/TRANSFER BREAK

Our solutions will help you to efficiently manage the unloading of arrival and
transfer baggage. All bags are unloaded manually, or with a lifting aid, and
belt conveyors have been configured as unloading quays.

RECLAIM

Our future-proof baggage reclaim solutions make optimal use of space. They also
incorporate a modular design to easily integrate into your facility.

BAGLOAD

Integrated robot loading is no longer a technology for tomorrow – in fact it’s
here today and has the potential to transform your make-up operations. We have
the expertise to integrate robotics into your baggage make-up areas.

HOW CASE PICKING ROBOTS HELP WAREHOUSES DEAL WITH LABOUR CHALLENGES

Many jobs in omni-channel retail, e-commerce and grocery warehouses become
exceedingly difficult to fill. Meanwhile, online shoppers expect a wide
selection of SKUs to be available at low prices, and delivered fast and free.
How to maintain the productivity levels that keep customers happy, without
enough available labour?

OPTIMISING YOUR FOOTPRINT WHILE HANDLING SMALLS

The parcel industry is managing an exponential increase in small packages, due
to the popularity of online shopping and e-commerce. How to efficiently process
all those individual parcels, especially if you’re struggling with labour
shortage and a lack of space?

XDOCK

Our cross-dock solution – XDOCK – provides an effortless way to automate
stockless operations. This will help you to reduce delivery times as you
directly ship products to stores on an on-demand basis.

PALLETISING

Optimal stacking patterns can significantly lower the cost of filling your store
shelves. The trick is to ensure that pallets are selected in the same sequence
of product groups as your store’s layout.

TRAYSORTER

Our TRAYSORTER (or Bombay sorter) is a highly flexible flat sorter, which can
handle a wide range of products. From clothing and accessories, to shoe boxes
and multimedia items, this is the most efficient choice for a portfolio of small
and lightweight products.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

We’re taking a more circular approach to our solutions, as well as introducing
circularity as a requirement in product and supplier criteria. Central to our
work is reusing, recycling and remanufacturing as much as possible as we
implement our Supplier Code of Conduct.

WELLBEING

Much of our success as a company depends on our people, and creating a working
environment that offers a fulfilling experience. That means protecting those
working with our solutions, encouraging more women into our workforce, and
offering training and career development.

GOOD BUSINESS

A growing number of laws and regulations affect our business. The Good Business
programme ensures compliance, while helping us maintain high ethical standards.
As part of this programme, we are strengthening vetting of suppliers, investing
more in cybersecurity and embedding risk management into our operations.

ZERO CARBON FOOTPRINT

We’ve created a roadmap to identify the main areas where we can reduce emissions
upstream, downstream and in our own operations. We will be designing more
energy-efficient solutions and products, and working closely with suppliers to
reduce emissions from parts, components and equipment.
