The online retailer’s intense operational demands pushed the system to its limits, and for a company obsessed with customer satisfaction, even the smallest delays in service are unacceptable… UNDERSTANDING AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM’S MAINTENANCE NEEDS Once a distribution centre’s (DC) or fulfilment operation’s automated system is in place, it’s in the best interest of facility managers, owners and operators to keep it running reliably and at peak performance. That ensures both maximum productivity and return on investment (ROI). However, in order to achieve optimal uptime, it’s important to understand the facility’s expectations, and plan the maintenance and service programme accordingly. PASSENGER TERMINAL EXPO 2025 Vanderlande will be joining the Netherlands Pavillion at Future Travel Experience (FTE) APEX Asia Expo, taking place at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore from 19 to 20 November 2024. BONFIX When BONFIX B.V. decided to build a new distribution centre, it chose Vanderlande as its automation partner. The goods-to-person order fulfilment solution FASTPICK is not only helping this family business to manage large volumes of ever-growing orders quickly and efficiently – it’s also won over employees by making their jobs more rewarding. SEASON’S GREETINGS 2024 FROM CRISIS TO COMEBACK With nearly 15 years’ experience at Vanderlande and a strong track record working with Amazon since 2018, Colin Marnane had seen and overcome it all – or so he thought. However, just four years into this partnership, was the relationship with Amazon about to come to an abrupt end? CONCRETE PROBLEMS, CREATIVE SOLUTIONS With a career at Amazon spanning almost ten years, Michael Erhard has been fortunate to work on nearly every one of the company’s European fulfillment centers. Each project taught him something new, but one in particular stands out as the most challenging… VÁCLAV HAVEL AIRPORT PRAGUE In 2019, Vanderlande began work on a major expansion and refurbishment of two baggage handling systems (BHS) at Prague Airport. The goal was to help both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 cope with increasing passengers numbers, as well as bring the airport into compliance with ECAC Standard 3 screening regulations and improve links between the terminals. MEET THE EXPERT: ADAPTO AUTOMATED STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM Join Michelle Borm, Bart de Rooij, and Matthijs Morshuis in this edition of our Meet the Expert Vlog as they delve into the automatic storage and retrieval system ADAPTO, our highly automated goods to person solution. VANDERLANDE RECOGNISED AS A “CHALLENGER” IN PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABILITY Vanderlande has been named as a runner-up in a prestigious award for a project to remanufacture parts of a sortation solution widely used by the parcel industry. The company received recognition as a Challenger for the “Top Sustainability Initiative” at the Digital Engineering Awards 2024, which were held in Dallas on 5 December. THE RACE TO DELIVER AMAZON’S FIRST EUROPEAN ARS FULFILMENT CENTER When it comes to working with Amazon, few people in Vanderlande have as much experience as Stephan Gather, who was involved in the first collaboration back in 1999. He was to need all that know-how when project managing “MAN1” in the UK. The Manchester site was to become the first Amazon Robotics Sortable (ARS) facility in Europe – and the job had to be turned around to a tight deadline. VANDERLANDE REOPENS REVERSE LOGISTICS CENTRE TO DRIVE REUSE, REMANUFACTURING AND RECYCLING Vanderlande is proud to announce the reopening of its Reverse Logistics Centre in Veghel, The Netherlands. The centre will help us take the next steps as we maximise the value of returned materials by focusing on reuse, remanufacturing and recycling. AN “INTENTS” COLLABORATION WITH VANDERLANDE! When the upper floor of a brand new Amazon fulfilment center needed to be water blasted, Zofia Sobiech, her team and supplier Vanderlande had to think outside the box – or should we say inside the tent – to protect the equipment below… WEATHERING THE PERFECT STORM When four major Amazon projects landed all at once – and three senior team members unexpectedly resigned – Stephen Kramar, Director of Project Management, found himself stepping into multiple roles, and rallying his team through one of the most challenging periods of his career. DEN5 – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? A Senior Site Manager at the time, Kevin Petrie was tasked with overseeing the execution of a high-stakes project that would shape Amazon’s future in robotics. However, when a key supplier announced a major delay, Kevin and his team would have to accept the challenge of “mission impossible” to keep the project on track. FROM ARUBA TO AMAZON At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Anna Pereira faced a daunting new challenge: relocating from Barcelona to Cincinnati to work on one of Amazon’s largest air hub projects. With international borders closed to most travelers, a direct flight wasn’t an option. The solution? A 14-day quarantine on the tropical island of Aruba before flying on to the USA. WE EVEN GAVE AMAZON THE KEYS TO OUR OFFICE! In 2017, Remko van Gils was tasked with setting up Vanderlande’s branch in Seattle, specifically to service Amazon’s needs and be close to the key decision-makers. When it comes to managing projects, the company’s sense of urgency and speed has always been unmatched, but would moving across the Atlantic really add value to the relationship? “WE TURNED A PROBLEM INTO A SUCCESS STORY” In 2019, Markus Ehrmann faced a difficult challenge when Vanderlande’s Flow Sort Controller (FSC) system encountered issues at several of Amazon’s European sites. The online retailer’s intense operational demands pushed the system to its limits, and for a company obsessed with customer satisfaction, even the smallest delays in service are unacceptable… “LIKE BUILDING A CAR – WHILE YOU’RE STILL DRIVING IT!” Greg Tirevold had spent most of his decade-long career at Vanderlande working with Amazon before one particular project would leave a lasting impact. In 2018 he was invited to Seattle to design a new robotic sortation facility. This would put Greg in charge of a demanding schedule, far from home and for much longer than expected… AIR HUB NEGOTIATIONS HELP RELATIONSHIP TAKE FLIGHT Having joined Vanderlande in 1996, Geert Visser has been witness to the developing relationship with Amazon since the companies first joined forces. While the initial projects were relatively small, a significant shift happened when he entered a crucial negotiation over automating Amazon’s first air hub… 25 YEAR PARTNERSHIP AMAZON Vanderlande and Amazon have enjoyed a robust 25-year partnership that has significantly shaped the landscape of fulfillment and logistics.
