In 2015, Marie Holmes, a low-income single mother in North Carolina, had her
wishes granted when she won the Powerball jackpot of an astounding 188 million
dollars. Anyone could buy a mansion, cruise in a Ferrari, and fly in a private
jet with all that cash. However, after Holmes won the lottery, her life turned
very negative. The last thing she expected was someone out there wanting to take

WINNING THE LOTTERY

Marie Holmes deserved the lottery more than anyone. Holmes, a 26-year-old single
mother with four children, worked two jobs. She worked at McDonald’s and Walmart
to support her family. Holmes left both jobs before winning the lottery because
one of her children was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. For a single mother,
raising four children is difficult, especially if one has a disability. She
wanted to care for her children, but she couldn’t keep her job.
