KAZAKHSTAN AND OECD PROPOSE OPENING REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE

The proposal to establish an OECD representative office in Kazakhstan was
highlighted during a recent meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister
of National Economy of Kazakhstan, Nurlan Baibazarov, and William Thompson, head
of the Eurasia Department at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development (OECD).

The discussion centered on the progress of implementing the OECD's
recommendations, the joint Action Plan between the Government of Kazakhstan and
the OECD Secretariat through 2025, and the ongoing cooperation within the OECD
Eurasian Competitiveness Agenda.



Currently, the OECD maintains regional offices in China, Indonesia, Ukraine, and
Greece.

William Thompson praised Kazakhstan's positive engagement with the OECD,
highlighting several key reforms influenced by the organization's
recommendations.

These include the establishment of an investment ombudsman, enhanced
parliamentary control over budget usage, the development of a Low-Carbon
Development Strategy until 2060, the creation of the National Contact Centre for
Responsible Business Conduct, and the formation of the Supreme Audit Chamber. 

Additionally, Kazakhstan has initiated the decentralization of power by
introducing direct elections for akims (mayor) of districts and cities of
regional significance.

> leader in Central Asia in implementing its recommendations. In 2025,
> Kazakhstan intends to apply for accession to this authoritative international
> organization as a full member. We are confident that further cooperation will
> have a qualitative impact on the socio-economic and legal aspects of the
> development of our state," emphasized Nurlan Baibazarov.
