5 WAYS TO HONOUR MOM ON MOTHER’S DAY

April 28, 2011
tags: Mothers Day, Tips
by Terrafolia Flowers

It’s that time of year again! Yep, Mother’s Day is Sunday May 8th and you know
you want to be prepared this year. This time around, you’re gonna do your due
diligence and honour her the way you know she deserves. We get it, we have moms
too and this is a special time of year for Terrafolia as well… Actually, it’s
our busiest! Not everyone has a lover (like at Valentine’s) but everyone’s got a
mom. :)

An ode to Mother’s Day, here are our 5 favourite ways to honour mom:

WRITE HER A LETTER

Yeah gift cards are nice, but you know what’s even nicer? A card that’s filled
with your handwriting about how much you appreciate her and everything she’s
done for you and those around her. Writing letters on Mother’s Day is a lost
holiday tradition; Put down the iPad, and get a pen and paper. When was the last
time you sat down to write a letter anyway? We bet you she keeps it forever too.

IF IT’S BROKE, FIX IT

You know that leaky faucet she’s mentioned a few times? Or that top shelf she
has to get out a step-stool to clean? Or how about her uber-slow computer? A
mother’s environment is very important to her, there are never enough hours in
the day to get it just the way she wants it. Start paying attention now to the
little things she wishes she had a chance to do, then on Mother’s Day, hire
someone to get it done or come to the rescue yourself.

GET AN “A” FOR EFFORT

Is she a foodie? Seems obvious, but take her to a restaurant she’s never been to
before, even if it’s not around the corner, it’ll make her feel really special
and she’ll know this isn’t just another dinner. Be sure to make reservations
though, Mother’s Day is typically the busiest day of the year. Is she often
stressed? Find out her favourite spa and send her for a massage, it’s a luxury
she likely doesn’t allow herself too often. Creative mom? Find a local workshop
or course offered in something you know she always wanted to try or improve on,
like a photography group or painting classes. Avid Reader? Get book
recommendations and take a little time to find something you know she’ll love.
What’s the idea here? Don’t be lazy.

CALL YOUR MOTHER

Yeah, we’ve all heard this one a few times, but how about you take a different
swing at this and rather than repeating it to yourself in your guilt ridden
head, actually schedule it. That’s right, commit to calling mom every few days
or even once a week if that fits better with you. The point is, you’ll be
setting aside time, regularly. Set up an automatic reminder (on repeat) to call
her just to catch up, fill her in on what’s new in your life and to ask how
she’s doing. You know you can spare 10-20 min every Sunday evening, why not
start on May 8th?

MAKE HER SMILE

Nothing says “just because I love you” more than flowers. Sure they’re a typical
Mother’s Day gift, but there’s a very important reason for that; They make
people happy. It’s Spring, remind her of how fresh and beautiful she is in one
of the most beautifully simple ways. Flowers aren’t just for wedding and
funerals, no, they don’t last forever (though they will in her heart), but
that’s sort of the point isn’t it? What says you’re worth it more than something
so special and expressive? Even if you’re far away, flower delivery is available
everywhere by your local florist. Mother’s Day is a very busy time of year for
florists, so just be sure to order early.

Browse our Mother’s Day Flowers now.

Oh, and of course a big warm Happy Mother’s Day to all you deserving moms from
all of us at Terrafolia Flowers!

HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR FLORIST AT VALENTINE’S DAY

January 22, 2011
tags: How To, Valentine's Day
by Terrafolia Flowers

If you’ve ever given Valentine’s Day Flowers to your beloved, you know that
showing up at your local florist on the 14th is not so wise.

Valentine’s Day is the single busiest day of the year for florists, and it is
notorious in the industry for last-minute panic. Unlike Mother’s Day which can
have florists running & making deliveries for a week, Valentine’s Day is thought
of as “day of–do or die”.

Florists have a love/hate relationship with the holiday; sure, business is
great, but oh boy do we work for it. Since your florist is in such high demand
at this time of year, mishaps can happen, but if you are armed with the right
information, your florist will make this Valentine’s Day one that will knock her
socks off.

HERE ARE OUR TIPS TO GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR FLORIST FOR VALENTINE’S DAY:

ORDER EARLY

This one should be pretty obvious but you’d be surprised how many calls we
receive to have flowers delivered at 3pm on the 14th of February (no joke). At
that time many florists have already unplugged their phones so they can handle
their walk-in clients. It should go without saying, but be smart and be
courteous, place your orders for delivery and pick-up a week in advance.

HAVE FLOWERS DELIVERED AHEAD OF TIME

Of course the most obvious day for Valentine’s Day delivery is Valentine’s Day
itself, but if you consider sending your gift a day or 2 early you’ll see how
much it just makes sense. What if a major snow storm hit in your area that made
deliveries impossible? What if you’re not exactly sure where she’ll be but you
know she’ll be home the day before? Or what if there were some amazing incentive
from your florist to send your flowers early?

BE PATIENT

Since this holiday can have florists (literally) running, when our clients offer
patience, we swoon. Temporary staff, long hours, over the top receiving/cleaning
of flowers, winter roads and bursts of last-minute orders can leave us stretched
pretty thin. Every year we remark at the irony that the one day we’re pushed the
hardest, is the one day that most clients will judge our shop for the year. We
know this is an important day for you, and we push ourselves above and beyond in
the name of your love. A little patience will go a long way to ensuring you get
only the very best service.

BE ORIGINAL

It’s said that 99% of all roses produced in a year are sold on 1 day, this can
have a big effect on not only the price of red roses at this time of year, but
also the availability and quality. Instead of sending a dozen red roses, why not
send a mixed bouquet that includes red roses instead? Even pink roses, a vase of
all red mixed flowers, an exotic bouquet or red roses paired with another
favourite are all great alternatives to the traditional. It will show that you
thought things through, and didn’t just go for the obvious choice.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS

Much of the beauty of giving flowers is that they last a lifetime in the memory
of the person who received them, but to get the longest vase life, follow the
care instructions included with your bouquet. If you’re bringing home a bouquet
of wrapped flowers, cut the stems underwater and fill the vase (we mean fill)
with fresh lukewarm water and the floral solution included by your florist.
Every couple of days re-cut the stems and add fresh water (more here). Typically
at this time of year, Roses will last 3-5 days and other flowers can stay
beautiful for a week, two or even longer depending on their variety.

AND NOW YOU KNOW…

Follow these tips, and you’ll be sure to have a Valentine’s Day you both won’t
soon forget.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Have any more pointers or resources? Be sure to comment and let us know!

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ‘IN LIEU OF FLOWERS’

August 12, 2010
tags: flowers for sympathy, funeral flowers, in lieu of flowers
by Terrafolia Flowers

[Note: We are asked almost daily about the meaning of ‘in lieu of flowers’, even
though it could be interpreted as self-serving, we thought it was important to
demystify it for you as best we can.]

When it comes to funerals people have the tendency to tread very lightly with
traditions, customs and following the family’s wishes. It’s no surprise that
when you hear or read the words “in lieu of flowers” you’d assume that means the
family prefers not to receive them. Truth is, this is usually just a bad habit
of the Funeral Director to say the family wishes to have a donation made on
behalf of the deceased, not that they wish not to receive flowers at all.
Funeral Directors themselves rank flowers & plants above even food and sympathy
cards as providing the most comfort to those grieving.

NOT JUST FOR SHOW

Consider that 77% of people polled in this nationwide survey felt flowers at the
funeral brighten up the somber environment of the funeral home. 80%  agreed that
looking at the cards to see who sent the flowers was a comfort to them. Also,
interestingly 53% agreed the flowers and plants provided something to talk about
during the visitation.

When the flowers themselves are gone, the grieving always remember the flowers
sent and who sent them. We have families even call to thank us, the Florist! You
can just imagine what the gesture meant from those sending the flowers.

THE ROOT OF THE MATTER

“Flowers have a long association with the funerary practices of humans,
beginning in pre-history. In fact, the archeological record shows evidence of
flowers being buried with the remains of Neanderthal men. Ancient civilizations
across Europe and the Middle East also burned, buried or entombed flowers with
their dead. With their innate processes of development…. from infant seed to
youthful sprout to fully blossomed adult to withering petals, and culminating in
the ripening pods or fruits which bear within them the promise of life
renewed….flowers are an elegant metaphor for the ongoing cycle of life itself,
and a symbol of immortality; something which even cavemen understood. Flowers
are life exemplified.” Read more

Below is a video produced (way back when) by The Society of American Florists to
inform Florists & individuals on the subject.

So next time you see the words “in lieu of flowers” remember that it might just
mean the Funeral Director needs to expand their vocabulary. The choice remains
yours, a donation is always a very nice way to express your sympathies and
commemorate those gone, just don’t forget the warmth and comfort that flowers
bring to those left behind too.

OF COURSE, WE ARE HERE TO HELP

If you are looking to send flowers to those closest to the deceased, browse
appropriate flowers for the service and visitation. Remember to check the local
Obituaries to ensure you have all information needed for the delivery.

If you don’t think that flowers are appropriate for the funeral home, many
people also choose to send flowers to the home.

If you are looking for funeral flowers for a loved one such as a casket or urn
spray, please visit our catalogue or call us during business hours at
514-683-3533 or 1-888-683-7799.
