It comes after the Israeli military urged all people in Gaza City to leave their homes "for their own safety", in a strong suggestion it is set to begin a ground assault. That's after Israel told more than one million Palestinians to evacuate to the south of Gaza. "We really don't know how this could possibly be feasible," Elizabeth Throssell told Sky News. "You are basically asking people to go across a closely populated war zone," she said. "They have got scant or little transport. There are no guarantees of safety as the hostilities continue. "You are also forcing people into terrible choices." She said colleagues at the World Health Organisation had been speaking to medical staff who are treating patients in the north of Gaza who say leaving would mean abandoning their patients to "let them die." Earlier, Israel's defence minister said civilians were being told to go south of Gaza "because we don't want to harm them." He begins by saying he has spoken to families who have lost loved ones today and Israel will "never forget these horrific acts of our enemies" "We are striking at our enemies with unprecedented might - this is just the beginning." He adds Israel is rallying "tremendous international support" for the country. "We are going to eradicate Hamas, and we are going to bring victory," he says. A line of police officers told them they couldn't go in and pushed them back up the street past coffee shops and kebab stalls. The Israeli government had ruled that nobody under 60 years old could pray this Friday at the al Aqsa Mosque. In reality, I saw a lot of men younger than 60 being allowed to pass, but teenagers and men in their 20s and 30s were barred. Inside the ancient walls following the alleyways that lead past the 14 stations of the cross, there were more checkpoints. While we could pass using our press IDs, the worshippers were directed to the Lion's Gate entrance to the mosque - but again, no young men were allowed. Small groups instead gathered in the narrow streets, preparing to pray in the open until police moved them along too. The high security was inevitable after the events of this week, and it was guaranteed after calls for a "day of rage" by Hamas across the world. Sure enough after prayers in Jerusalem, small groups of men outside the Old City's walls threw stones at the security forces, who returned fire with tear gas and sprayed skunk water - a foul smelling liquid - from an armoured water cannon truck. This was nothing exceptional though; in fact I have seen a lot worse on other "ordinary" Fridays here. After the Hamas raid on Israel, there was an expectation here for potential for real trouble, but if anything, things felt quieter than usual. Read more of Stuart Ramsay's report below... HERE'S YOUR EVENING ROUND-UP If you are just joining us this evening, events have been unfolding fast. Israel has been building up military hardware on the border for a potential ground invasion and ordered more than one million people in Gaza's north to move to its south "immediately". Here are some of the other key developments today: * Israeli infantry and tanks launched their first ground missions as "localised raids" take place in Gaza; * 70 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on convoys fleeing Gaza City, Hamas says; * The US appeared to urge caution in any Israeli offensive, with only one main highway bridge available to cross into the south of Gaza, a military analyst said; * Tens of thousands of people have demonstrated across the Middle East and Asia in support Palestinians; * Israel denied using white phosphorus in Gaza; * Israeli shelling towards the town of Dhayra, in south Lebanon, has struck a Lebanese army observation post, two security sources and a separate source told Reuters; * Senior EU officials and Israel's president sought cover in protected shelter as air-raid sirens sounded across Tel Aviv; * The UN described the scale and speed of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza as "bone-chilling", with the area "fast becoming a hellhole"; * Some 1,799 Palestinians, including 500 children, have been killed, according to Gaza's health ministry. Israel last reported 1,300 deaths; * There has been a "massive increase" in antisemitic incidents in London, as well as a smaller increase in Islamophobic incidents, the Met Police said; * The powerful Iran-backed and Lebanon-based group, Hezbollah, said it was "ready" and would "contribute" to confrontations against Israel. Copy link Close post 39m ago 19:52 ISRAEL GIVES HOSPITAL JUST 'TWO HOURS TO EVACUATE' Israel has given a hospital in Gaza "just two hours to evacuate", a humanitarian organisation has said. MSF International said Al Awda Hospital has been told to evacuate staff and patients by the country. "Our staff are still treating patients," it said in a statement posted on X. "We unequivocally condemn this action, the continued indiscriminate bloodshed and attacks on health care in Gaza. "We are trying to protect our staff and patients." Earlier today, Israel told 1.1 million Palestinians to leave Gaza City amid growing hints it may be preparing to launch a full ground offensive into the territory. Copy link Close post 40m ago 19:50 NO AID GETTING INTO GAZA, SAYS UN No aid is getting into Gaza because the border crossings remain closed, the UN has said. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is in constant contact with Israeli authorities, urging them to "avert a humanitarian catastrophe," spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. He said it was vital that Israeli authorities protected all civilians, including in UN shelters in Gaza. Almost all border crossings into Gaza are controlled by Israel, with one controlled by Egypt to the south. Copy link Close post 51m ago 19:39 ANALYSIS: GAZA RAIDS SHOW SHIFT FROM AIR OPERATIONS TO GROUND MISSIONS - AND MORE COULD HAPPEN IN THE COMING HOURS In the last few moments, we have spoken to our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall about the "localised raids" conducted by the Israeli Defence Forces. He said there were "multiple reasons" for the "limited incursion". These included, he said, locating hostages, eliminating weapons belonging to Hamas and targeting Hamas rocket crews. "It was clearly an intelligence probing mission. This is not the full scale invasion that we might see in the coming hours or days - not yet at least," Bunkall explained. "I was trying to think of the last time the Israelis went into Gaza on the ground, certainly in 2014, possibly in 2018 in a limited way, but not for many years. "This is Israeli special forces going in with heavy armour to do a very targeted raid. I wouldn't be surprised if and when a ground invasion occurs, we see this happen on a much more regular scale. "It could be that you see a mass of troops going into a certain sort of depth within the Gaza Strip and then from there, using small units and special forces to project out into Gaza. "Tonight, I think we are seeing maybe a slow, but definitely a shift from the air operations to some ground mission. "I wouldn't be surprised if we have more in the coming hours." Copy link Close post 1h ago 19:27 70 PEOPLE KILLED FLEEING GAZA CITY, SAYS HAMAS Hamas' press office has said 70 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on convoys fleeing Gaza City. The cars were struck in three places as they headed south from the city, it said. It was not immediately clear who the target of the airstrikes was, or whether militants were among the passengers. Palestinians began a mass exodus from northern Gaza after Israel's military ordered some one million people to evacuate toward the southern part of the territory. The order came as the prospect of a potential Israeli ground invasion loomed, with Israel saying it would "operate significantly in Gaza City" in the coming days. Earlier today, Humza Yousaf posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) of his wife's mother, Elizabeth el-Nakla. She visited Gaza last week along with his father-in-law, Maged, but the pair have since been "trapped" after the Hamas attack on Israel and subsequent retaliation. Speaking to our political editor Beth Rigby, a clearly distressed Mr Yousaf wiped away tears as he said: "I cannot tell you Beth, how powerless and helpless I feel. Not just for my own mother-in-law and in-laws." "It doesn't matter who you are. Whether you are first minister, you're a journalist, whoever you are - your first instinct is to protect your family, as best as you can. "And I am completely powerless. The only thing I can do is share their story." He appealed to the international community "to set up humanitarian corridors, to end collective punishment, to allow supplies to come in, to allow the innocent people of Gaza [to leave], and that's all I can do. "But really, it is for the international community. It has to step up. Not for the sake for my mother-in-law, my father-in-law, but there are 2.2 million people in Gaza - the vast majority of whom have nothing to do with Hamas, and no doubt will be appalled by what has happened." The directive was widely interpreted as indicating that Israel may be preparing to launch a ground offensive. But as reported here a little earlier, Israel gave a clearer hint it was gearing up for a shift from air strikes as the country's military announced it had carried out "localised raids" in the Palestinian enclave over the last 24 hours. Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner told Sky News the operations were conducted to locate "potential abductees", identify bodies and "seek out terrorists". Asked if this was the beginning of a bigger ground operation, he said it was "the continuation of what we've been doing for the last seven days". "We're escalating. That is part of our efforts to restore calm and security to the people of Israel and defeat Hamas," he added. He explained there were still people unaccounted for and that this move was part of operations to find out if they had been abducted or were "lying dead in a field". He also said there was "still a threat" in southern Israel and that Hamas "terrorists" could still be in the territory. Some 300,000 reservists have been recruited so far, in case the military is given orders to mobilise in Gaza, he added. Earlier today, the IDF ordered 1.1 million Palestinians to leave Gaza City in the next 24 hours. However, Lt Col Lerner said the time frame was "not ironclad". "I did not detail any timeline in our announcement. We were very clear, we demanded the immediate evacuation of people from the north," he added. Asked what it would look like when the IDF intensifies its operation, Lt Col Lerner said the "responsibility for the wellbeing of the people of Gaza is primarily on Hamas". "They are going to pay the price. The people don't need to pay the price," he said. The declaration means entry to the area is strictly prohibited. Metula has a population of fewer than 2,000 and is the northernmost town in Israel. The IDF also announced earlier today that an explosion at the security fence adjacent to Hanita - a kibbutz near the Lebanese border southwest of Metula - caused light damage. Israeli forces responded with artillery fire toward Lebanon. They have also been searching the Hanita area following an alert that it may have been infiltrated. A shell landed in a gathering of international journalists covering clashes on the border, the Associated Press reported. Some were rushed to hospital in ambulances. "We are deeply saddened to learn that our videographer, Issam Abdallah, has been killed," Reuters said in a statement. "We are urgently seeking more information, working with authorities in the region, and supporting Issam's family and colleagues." The shelling occurred during an exchange of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border between Israeli troops and members of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group. Issam Abdallah Copy link Close post 1h ago 18:40 EXPLAINED: THE KEY CONVERSATIONS TAKING PLACE BETWEEN COUNTRIES As Israel's war with Hamas nears its seventh day, we look at some of the key conversations that have taken place between nations worldwide. United Kingdom Rishi Sunak spoke to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, yesterday to "reaffirm the UK's steadfast support for Israel following Hamas's appalling terrorist attack", Number 10 said. After the talks, the UK confirmed it is sending RAF aircraft and Royal Navy ships to carry out surveillance over Israel in a show of support. The prime minister also spoke to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi yesterday to acknowledge the challenging security situation at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza. Sunak and Netanyahu earlier this year United States US defence secretary Lloyd Austin was in Tel Aviv today meeting senior government leaders. He met Mr Netanyahu and spent nearly two hours with Yoav Gallant, the defence minister, and the Israeli war cabinet. Antony Blinken wsa in Doha today for meetings with Qatari officials. The US secretary of state and the country's prime minister planned to developments in the Israel-Hamas conflict, ways to de-escalate it and the protection of civilians, according to the Qatari foreign ministry. Mr Blinken will also visit Bahrain and Saudi Arabia as part of his biggest tour of the Middle East since he took office in January 2021. He began the tour in Tel Aviv yesterday, where he gave Israel the full backing of the US, before he met Palestine's president Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah of Jordan in Amman. Iran and Saudi Arabia Ebrahim Raisi, the Iranian president, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on Wednesday, in the first telephone call between the two leaders since a China-brokered deal between Tehran and Riyadh to resume ties in March. According to state media in Iran, the pair discussed the "need to end war crimes against Palestine". Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Germany Germany's chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said he has spoken to Mr Netanyahu about how his country can best support Israel. The chancellor told the German parliament yesterday that he offered military help to Israel and promised to crack down on support for the militant Hamas group at home. Copy link Close post 2h ago 18:22 ISRAELI INFANTRY AND TANKS CARRY OUT 'LOCALISED RAIDS' IN GAZA - IN FIRST HINT AT SHIFT TO GROUND ASSAULTS Israel has carried out "localised raids" in Gaza over the last 24 hours, Israel's chief military spokesperson has said. Infantry and tank units took part, aimed at locating rocket crews and hostages, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised briefing. At least 120 hostages are being held in Gaza, said the military. It appears to be the first disclosure of a shift from an air campaign to ground operations. A "significant number" of Gaza civilians have begun moving south "to save themselves", it continued. Copy link Close post 2h ago 18:21 RUSSIA ACCUSES ISRAEL OF 'CRUELTY' IN RETALIATIONS Israel is responding to unprecedented cruelty with "cruel methods" of its own, Vladimir Putin has said. He said there had been "unacceptable" calls in the US for a blockade of Gaza on a par with "the siege of Leningrad" by Nazi Germany in the Second World War. "More than two million people live there [Gaza]. Far from all of them support Hamas by the way, far from all. But all of them have to suffer, including women and children," said Mr Putin. "Israel is replying on a large scale and also with quite cruel methods." The president said Russia could help resolve the crisis in negotiations, as his deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin met Israeli ambassador to Moscow Alexander Ben Zvi. The pair spoke about preventing catastrophic humanitarian consequences and the spread of the crisis to other countries in the region, the Russian foreign ministry said. Mr Putin's comments are significant, as Moscow has sought to maintain close relations with both Hamas and Israel - which has itself refrained from outright condemnation of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Commentators will inevitably now be monitoring these relations for any signs of a change. Copy link Close post 2h ago 18:12 ANALYSIS: THIS IS A DANGEROUS MOMENT IN WAR - AND THE REST OF THE WORLD IS HOLDING ITS BREATH By Dominic Waghorn, international affairs editor We might think we've seen it all before - airstrikes, flattened buildings, funerals, inflamed rhetoric on both sides. But make no mistake, this time is different. And what happens next is hugely important for the region and the world. It is a dangerous moment. Black Saturday, as the Israelis call it, has changed everything - for now at least. Rightly or wrongly, Israeli officials believe the threat this time may become existential. That fear will determine what they do next. That may seem over the top. However horrendous and barbaric, the attacks were limited to one small area and Israel is a mighty country with powerful friends. But what happened that day has undermined the mystique of Israel's military superiority. Its deterrence is hugely weakened and that could destabilise the region to the point of much wider conflict. Since its inception, Israel has tried to project strength to survive among neighbours who want to destroy it. Its forces have prevailed over Hamas in all previous conflicts. In its only war with Hezbollah in 2006, its military was effective enough to deter any provocation by the Lebanese Shia resistance militia since. But on Saturday, Israeli soldiers were slaughtered in their beds, militants on motorbikes overran the IDF in its bases. Videos filmed by Hamas seen across this region show Israelis in uniform begging for mercy, or lying dead. An untold number of Israeli soldiers were taken hostage. Hamas transformed itself into an effective guerrilla fighting force and got the better of one of the world's strongest armies. The impact of all that is hard to overstate. Of the 1,799 people killed, 583 of them are children and 351 are women, according to Gaza's health ministry. Some 7,388 people have been injured, including 1,901 children and 1,185 women, it said. Copy link Close post 2h ago 17:53 EGYPT REJECTS ISRAEL'S CALL FOR PALESTINIANS TO FLEE SOUTH Egypt has rejected calls from the Israeli army for Gaza's northern residents to flee south. Its foreign ministry has called the measure a "grave violation" of international humanitarian law, exposing more than one million people to danger. Israel ordered civilians to leave before it "operate[s] significantly in Gaza City" in the coming days. Earlier this week, Egypt rejected an Israeli recommendation that Palestinians fleeing its air strikes should cross the southern border into Egypt. Cairo has been a frequent mediator between Israel and the Palestinians, but has always insists the two sides resolve conflicts within their borders.
